A Framework for Performance Measurement and Management Based on Axiomatic Design and Analytical Hierarchy Process

    No full text
Performance measurement and management (PMM) is a key practice to drive modern businesses. The literature available in this field highlights a certain maturity regarding performance measurement systems, while few frameworks have been proposed for PMM, which is today target. This paper presents a new framework for PMM, namely Business System Design Decomposition (BSDD), based on the strengths of the Axiomatic Design (AD) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) techniques. The BSDD framework, offers a holistic approach to PMM, identifies cause-effects relationships in business processes, measures the performance versus stakeholders and offers interlinking between performance indicators. The result, is a deep understanding of the business environment and a real step forward PMM

Diverse roles of sustainability in the innovation and evolution of industrial business models: Lessons from three Italian cases.

    No full text
Emerging literature on industrial sustainability suggests that business model innovation may offer a means to facilitating enhanced sustainability. However, there is still a relatively limited understanding of how such innovation might be undertaken in practice. This paper presents preliminary findings from three case studies of Italian firms, and forms part of a larger project exploring business models for sustainability. Learning from the cases provides interesting insights into the drivers, enablers, and some unanticipated additional aspects of business model innovation for sustainability, and so contributes to extending the current body of knowledge

DEVELOPMENT OF A PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT SYSTEM: CASE STUDY OF AN ITALIAN SME

    No full text
Business performance measurement and management is a topic of increasing interest in both academic and industrial ambits. While performance indicators and frameworks have been developed for large companies, little research has focused on small and medium enterprises (SMEs). As a consequence of that, different kind of research are needed in order to extend the current body of knowledge. This paper is a contribute forward this direction. Particularly, the paper reports the case study of the implementation of a performance measurement system in a SME. The various stages of the project are highlighted and characteristics of the final system discussed. After two years of system’s adoption, feedbacks from user appear positive

A Framework For Evaluating Product-Service Systems Strategies

    No full text
Product-Service Systems (PSS) are new business strategies moving and extending the product value towards its functional usage and related required services. From a theoretical point of view the PSS concept is known since a decade and many Authors reported reasonable possible success factors: higher profits over the entire life-cycle, diminished environmental burden, and localization of required services. Many researchers reported very interesting experiments in large enterprises, typically specialized in functional goods production, while small and medium enterprises (SME) have not been properly considered especially in terms of global service strategy. From the flexibility point of view, SMEs seem to be facilitated in approaching a PSS business strategy, by a rapid re-organization of their value-chain/supply-chain (VC/SC), but, on the other hand, they require a structured, and interrelated approach in order to investigate and implement such a strategy. The reported research aims to identify and investigate key issues of a PSS strategy implantation in the SMEs context through a complete framework for new PSS initiatives evaluation

Many researchers reported very interesting experiments in large enterprises, typically specialized in functional goods production, while only few researches have been performed for small and medium enterprises (SME). From the flexibility point of view, SMEs seem to be facilitated in approaching a PSS business strategy, thanks to the rapid re-organization of their value-chain/supply-chain (VC/SC), but, on the other hand, requiring a structured, and interrelated approach in order to assess and implement such a strategy. This paper presents the learning from an action research (AR) in the health-care sector. AR has been used in order to experience a PSS initiative and therefore define, develop, and test a complete framework for assessing and implementing PSS strategies. Reflection on the story in the light of the experience and the theory is presented, as well as extrapolation to a broader context and articulation of usable knowledge

Performance Measurement and Management: A literature review and a research agenda

    No full text
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review the literature in the field of performance measurement and management (PMM) for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and large companies and propose a research agenda for the future. Design/methodology/approach – This paper provides an update of Neely’s work ‘‘The evolution of performance measurement research’’ The literature review has been carried out by using two different methodologies. Citation/co-citation analysis has been used to explore ‘‘performance measurement’’ (PM) literature, while a chronological review of main frameworks/models developed both for large and small companies is presented in order to highlight ‘‘PMM’’ literature. Findings – The paper analyzes the literature on the field and carries out the most cited works and the common characteristics of them based on the key words used. The results of the literature review reveal a certain maturity of the literature related to large companies and a significant lack of PMM literature for SMEs. Finally the paper argues the development and evolution of the research field that is now entering a phase of new directions. These new directions can be conceptualized in three ways – by context, by theme and by challenge. Research limitations/implications – The research presented in the paper is limited to work that is referred directly with performance measurement and management. Related research – such as literature on management control and accounting – has not been considered, even if future researches could include it. Originality/value – The paper extends Neely’s work under two dimensions: the research field evolution from2005 to 2008 and the investigation of the ‘‘performance management’’ dimension. The paper will be valuable to scholars working in the field of business performance measurement and management, interested in the literature evolution and in identifying future areas of research. A Decomposition And Hierarchical Approach For Business Performance Measurement And Management

Purpose – Performance measurement and management (PMM) is a key practice to drive modern businesses. The literature available in this field highlights a certain maturity regarding performance measurement systems, while few frameworks have been proposed for PMM, which is today’s target. Hence this paper aims to focus on the development of a new framework for providing direction and guidance to an organization in measuring and managing its performance. Design/methodology/approach – The proposed framework is developed based on the strengths of the axiomatic design (AD) and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) techniques. Findings – The framework proposed, namely ‘‘Business System Design Decomposition’’ (BSDD), offers a holistic approach to PMM, identifies cause-effect relationships in business processes, measures performance versus stakeholders, and offers interlinking between performance indicators. The result is a deep understanding of the business environment and a real step forward for PMM. Research limitations/implications – The proposed framework for PMM needs to be validated through an empirical approach or by a clinical approach utilizing a case study. Practical implications – The paper offers to academics, managers and practitioners a framework to understand, measure and manage business performance. Moreover, the application of the framework represents a learning process for the people involved in the project. Originality/value – Little research is available regarding holistic performance measurement and management systems and the understanding of quantitative relations between performance indicators. By combining two existing methodologies, the framework proposed adds value to the existing body of knowledge and offers good insights for addressing future research.
