Exploring global citizenship in Teacher Education Across Europe: A comparative analysis of Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland and Italy

    No full text
While supra-national institutions widely promote global citizenship education (GCE) worldwide, its translation into concrete educational practice in national and regional contexts is increasingly challenging. Within this scenario, teacher education plays a crucial role in implementing GCE policy in school practice. This chapter aims to discuss the findings of an analysis of nine pioneering GCE teacher education programs across four European countries: Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland and Italy, run by different agencies, using a multiple-site case study design and ethnography as overall methodological approach. The research aimed at highlighting the pedagogical ideas behind the practices and exploring the link between teacher education practice and policy enactment. Results show that teacher education is important not only to provide teachers with knowledge and competences required to educate pupils in GCE, but also for GCE integration in school. Therefore, the predominant approach that emerged in the observed teacher education settings (a value-based pedagogy) can be regarded as a somehow political action to school change. Moreover, this chapter will explore the contrasting cultures involved in teacher education programs among different actors (school staff, NGOs, Universities). It will also discuss how, while tensions between the content, methods and broader philosophical positions of actors may present a challenge, collaborative and cooperative approaches to teacher education offer important opportunities in this field

Compressive strength of heterogeneous masonry walls containing blends of brick types

The study presents a systematic approach for the evaluation of the compression strength of masonry walls composed of heterogeneous mixes of different types of blocks. First of all, the mechanics of a compressed heterogeneous masonry stack is investigated through a series of experimental tests and Finite Element models, then it is reviewed and discussed. Then, the problem of deriving the necessary material parameters entering the Hilsdorf formula is addressed. Solutions for the correct evaluation of the lacking data are presented based on the existing literature data. Finally, the well-known Hilsdorf formula is extended to the field of block blends with different mechanical properties. A deep experimental investigation on stacks and wallets made with fired clay, limestone and sandstone blocks is introduced for the first time. The comparison of the experimental data with the proposed theory points out the very good predictive capability of the extended Hilsdorf formula derived herein

Interpretation formulas for in situ characterization of mortar strength

The in situ characterization of mortar mechanical properties is a mandatory activity in every structural assessment of existing monumental buildings. Fine and complex numerical models are meaningless if the material parameters are hypothetical or based on reference values since there exist thousands of mortar compositions and brick types and aging processes do change values in a not easily predictable way. Therefore direct investigation of the mortar courses is a key ingredient, and this requires specific tools able to deal with thin layers of materials and requirements of conservation. There are however several ways able to investigate mortars without extracting consistent specimens, and most of them can be interpreted within the common framework of a Mohr-Coulomb plasticity constitutive behavior. Several of these techniques are even capable to discriminate superposed repointing layers of sufficient depth. In the paper, some versatile and effective mortar investigation techniques are reviewed and the formulas for the strength class definition are presented. Then, the predictive ability of the proposed formulas is checked against large experimental campaigns. Finally, an interesting investigation on the Ponte Taro bridge in Parma is used in comparing the results of different experimental tools. The data show a general good agreement among the mechanical properties extracted with the proposed procedures

Children at the dawn of the internet: Exploratory research on current and potential use at home and in school

Use of the Internet in Italy is in its early stages. Social representation and public discourse spread by mass media have emphasised the risks for children, at the expense of its opportunities. Such concerns are today largely hypothetical. This paper presents the initial results of an exploratory research project, using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, aimed at investigating the use of the Internet by children in a number of areas, mainly within the family and at school. The study found that children using the Internet as pioneers at home belong to a privileged elite, provided by the family with appropriate instruments and adequate technical and cultural resources. Far from being abandoned to the Internet, such children are supervised and led by parents-indeed often too much, as they are left little room to explore cyberspace independently. The establishment of the Internet in schools is rapid, but faces structural inadequacies while the use made of it is not always in keeping with its particular characteristics. © 2000, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

The urgency of making connections between an individual's learning and the world's broader issues has been increasingly recognised in recent decades. A central role has certainly been played by UNESCO. In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2015), and Global Competencies (OECD, 2018), policymakers have explicitly introduced the topic into national curricula. The article traces developments in Global Education and highlights how the umbrella concept of Global Citizenship Education can be a pedagogical framework in which global skills can be paradigmatically shaped within a transformative perspective. Multiculturalism in the world system: towards a social justice model of inter/multicultural education

Multiculturalism burst in Asia with the winds of globalisation. Fuelled by immigration, cultural hybridity and normative regimes from multilateral and bilateral organisations, multiculturalism is a new challenge for Asian economies, their politics of culture and their higher education institutions. Moreover, although heavily implemented from the start of the last century in the United States and in Europe to some extent, multiculturalism and multicultural education signify a premise in constructing models of cosmopolitan democracies and what has been known as ‘global citizenship education’. Drawing from the more mature experiences of the European Union (EU) and the United States in this field, this article traces the theoretical contours of and debates within multiculturalism. The article also focuses on the learning experience across borders, which is well represented in international comparative education studies. It probes the occurrence of any crisis in the field of multiculturalism in the United States and EU. Lessons learned from a comparison of the U.S. and EU experiences may be instructive to the Asian economies and cultures that are dealing with multiculturalism as a new force in the world system

Identification of damage-induced frequency decay on a large-scale model bridge

Planning the maintenance activity of a civil structure with a life cycle cost-effectiveness requires the evaluation of its functionality in service to identify possible damage states which need a retrofit, avoiding thus danger for the users. In this paper, this topic is explored by using an experimental 1:4 scale model bridge, in which some damage states on the main steel beams are introduced arbitrarily with the aim of detecting the effect of local cracks on the performance of the structure. By performing dynamic tests on the model bridge, it was possible to link the variability of the natural frequencies with the gradual stiffness reduction caused by the cracks. By processing the acceleration signals due to a random excitation of the 6.0 × 3.0 m2 deck, the main natural frequencies of the bridge have been extracted in several progressive damage states. The observed behaviour was explained by making use of a detailed Finite Elements numerical model. The frequency decay predicted by these methods is in close agreement with the experimental observations and permits to build a useful link between frequency data and damage detection
