    Information self-organization for knowledge discovery

    We describe new graphical user interfaces, used to facilitate navigation in information spaces. Operational use, and usability studies, are described and/or referenced. We next examine burgeoning needs in linking together on the one hand information backends and information streams; and on the other hand user needs and information representation platforms. This leads to a discussion of future perspectives in regard to middleware. Finally we overview an innovative approach to information characterization or filtering. Information retrieval by means of “semantic road maps” was first detailed in Doyle (1961). The spatial metaphor is powerful one in human information processing. The spatial metaphor also lends itself well to modern distributed computing environment such as the web. The Kohonen self-organizing map (SOM) method is an effective means towards this end of a visual information retrieval user interface. We will also provide below an illustration of web-based semantic maps based on hyperlink clustering

    The lack of shared infrustructure and standardisations between observations has made it difficult to discover and consume resources from multiple providers in order to automate intelligent processes, such as measurements cross-validation , data/services mash-up, and personalised knowledge representation based on intelligent processing of distributed measurement data. In other words, it isolates important data streams and intensifies the existing problem of too much data and not enough knowledge. On the other hand, Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) in Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) aims to enable real-time integration of heterogeneous sensor observations into the Web infrastructure so that data can be served through standard interfaces. NERC-NOCS is aiming to tackle this problem with a semantic web infrustructure that integrates the ever maturing semantic web technologies in W3C as well as SWE standards in OGC. These will allow people and programs to semantically describe their resources (sensor, measuring parameters, datasets and SWE services, etc) with an aim to facilitate their future reuse and interoprobability in the context of W3C and OGC

    Collaborative Ocean is an initiative under Ocean2025 to build a semantic web infrastructure to enable marine scientists to collaboratively publish their resources on the semantic web to assist multi-use of the ocean data. An important task in this mission is to enable semantic annotation of sensors, measurement data, operation, personnel, etc. and generate a repository of RDF triples in order to exploit semantic web capacities such as navigation and inference for intelligent resource discovery and data interoperability. To this end, we hope interested oceanographers, marine engineers and data providers can work collaboratively with the semantic web community to help opening up their data through weaving the semantic web.This initiative will complement the ontology groups, in particular the device ontology group by providing them a semantic web infrastructure on which their integration can be experimented

    An intelligent recommender system for web resource discovery and selection

    The Web is now evolving from information sharing to resource provisioning as the emerging Web services and Grid technologies are widely accepted and practiced. Soon the Web will be populated with abundant resources that can be accessed, shared and reused, which will inevitably lead to resource overflow. This chapter introduces a semantic-enabled, knowledge-based intelligent recommender system for Web resource discovery, selection and effective use. The system is based on a novel hybrid approach, which draws on the functionality of Semantic Web Services to represent, expose and discover available resources, and exploits domain knowledge to guide resource selection and use. We propose an integrated system architecture and describe the underpinning semantic- and knowledge-based recommending mechanisms. A number of technologies and tools are developed, and further applied to a real world application – the UK e-Science GEODISE project, to demonstrate the system’s applicability and benefits
