    Howard A. Tanner received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Michigan State University (MSU) in the Department of Zoology. He taught and conducted research at Colorado State University and led the Colorado Department of Game, Fish, and Parks Fisheries Research program from 1952-64. In the mid-1960s, Tanner became Chief of the Fisheries Division of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), where he initiated the successful introduction of Pacific coho salmon in the Great Lakes. He returned to MSU as Director of Natural Resources for the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and led in developing the campus water plan. Governor William Milliken appointed him first chair of the Michigan Environmental Review Board, then Director of the MDNR from 1975-83. Following his \u201cretirement\u201d from that post, he served another 10 years as a professor at MSU. To this day, Tanner\u2019s work to populate the Great Lakes with salmon is considered one of the largest, most successful biomanipulation programs in the history of North American fisheries management

    On using Directional Information for Parameter Space Decomposition in Ellipse Detection

    In this paper we use the parametric polar representation to extend the application of edge directional information from circle to ellipse extraction. As a result we obtain a mapping which decomposes the parameter space required for ellipse extraction into two independent sub-spaces and one final histogram accumulator. The mapping includes the tangent of the angle of the first and second directional derivatives. These tangents are computed by considering edge direction at two border points. We show that the use of gradient information for parameter space decomposition avoids the intensive point labelling imposed by geometric constraints used by other approaches

    Large-scale patterns in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in very large aspect ratio cells

    Large-scale patterns, which are well-known from the spiral defect chaos regime of thermal convection at Rayleigh numbers Ra 105. They are uncovered when the turbulent fields are averaged in time and turbulent fluctuations are thus removed. We apply the Boussinesq closure to calculate turbulent viscosities and diffusivities, respectively. The resulting turbulent Rayleigh number Ra_, that describes the convection of the mean patterns, is indeed in the spiral defect chaos range. Interestingly, the turbulent Prandtl numbers are smaller than one with 0:2 _ Pr_ _ 0:4 for Prandtl numbers 0:7 _ Pr _ 10. Finally, we demonstrate that these mean flow patterns are robust to an additional finite-amplitude side wall-forcing when the level of turbulent fluctuations in the flow is sufficiently high

    Experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on 3D offset jet reattaching to above free surface. Sharp edged square nozzle was used to produce the jets, and the measurements were performed at the following six different Reynolds numbers: 2300, 3700, 5100, 7900, 10300 and 11900. Detailed velocity measurements were made in the symmetry plane. From the PIV data, the mean velocity and turbulence statistics were obtained to study the effects of Reynolds number on the salient features of the jet flow. Preliminary results on streamwise mean velocity decay along the nozzle centerline, contours of streamwise mean velocity and Reynolds shear stress are presented herein

As it turns out, Professor A, who has been a first author more often than Professor Z, will have published more articles and experienced afaster growth rate over the course of her career as a result of reputation and visibility. University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2005Spatial segregation of adult and juvenile Tanner crabs was observed in conjunction with glacial landscape features during a comprehensive systematic survey of Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, in 2002. Hot spots (clusters of high values) of catch per unit effort for juveniles occurred mainly in two narrow glacial inlets, whereas most adult hot spots occurred in the central portion of the bay. Overall, juveniles were associated with shallower depths and warmer temperatures than adults. However, in juvenile hot spot areas, where adults were rare, juveniles were associated with greater depths and colder temperatures than adults. Glaciated landscapes may provide spatial refuges from predation and nursery areas for juveniles. Tagging methods with high trans-molt retention need to be developed for direct measurement of ontogenetic movement. A laboratory study was conducted to determine trans-molt survival and retention of Floy T-bar tags in juvenile Tanner crabs. Approximately half of crabs in all tagging treatments survived and retained tags through a molt. Trans-molt retention of Floy tags is hindered by complex morphology of the Tanner crab carapace

University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2006Commercially harvested Tanner crabs (Chionoecetes bairdi) are exposed to physical stressors during capture and sorting including changes in temperature and oxygen availability. This study characterizes the physiological and behavioral responses of Tanner crabs exposed to air (emersion) at 8 and -15°C for various durations. Concentrations of glucose and lactate in hemolymph measured between 30 and 120 min following emersion for 45 min differed between animals exposed to 8 or -15°C. Glucose concentrations were higher among animals emersed at 8°C than those exposed to -15°C within the intervals sampled. Lactate concentrations were unchanged at intervals following emersion at 8°C, while they were elevated at 120 min following emersion at -15°C. Rates of oxygen consumption (VO₂) increased immediately following 15, 30, and 45 min emersion at 8°C, whereas 30 and 45 min emersion at -15°C resulted in depressed VO₂. All crabs survived handling and emersion at 8°C, while exposure to -15°C resulted in increased mortality. Thus, differences among physiological parameters corresponded with differences in percentage survival between the two temperature treatments. While not providing a causal relationship between survival and physiology, the metabolic responses of Tanner crabs following a simulated capture protocol provide a predictive index of subsequent survival

The answer is twofold. First, the calibre of the author (Paul Starr), an awardee of both Bancroft and Pulitzer Prizes, a former policy advisor to the Clinton administration, and the author of The Transformation of American Medicine (1982), a book with a profound impact on American policy circles. Second, the core concept (entrenchment) of the book, and its potential to advance the process of institutional development, and the ways in which we can reform and change our institutions to better meet the current and pressing needs of the many, rather than preserve the unequal privileges of a few. In light of the geopolitical, social, and environmental pressures we see currently rising across the world (George, Howard-Grenville, Joshi &amp; Tihanyi, 2016; Howard-Grenville, Buckle, Hoskins &amp; George, 2014) there is no better time to examine whether and how we can address some of these grand challenges by reforming and improving our institutions
