Dialectal variation in german 3-verb clusters : a surface-oriented optimality theoretic account

    No full text
We present data from an empirical investigation on the dialectal variation in the syntax of German 3-verb clusters, consisting of a temporal auxiliary, a modal verb, and a predicative verb. The ordering possibilities vary greatly among the dialects. Some of the orders that we found occur only under particular stress assignments. We assume that these orders fulfil an information structural purpose and that the reordering processes are changes only in the linear order of the elements which is represented exclusively at the surface syntactic level, PF (Phonetic Form). Our Optimality theoretic account offers a multifactorial perspective on the phenomenon

Low Population Differentiation but High Phenotypic Plasticity of European Beech in Germany

    No full text
Drought is increasingly impairing the vitality of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in several regions of its distribution range. In times of climate change, adaptive traits such as plant phenology and frost tolerance are also becoming more important. Adaptive patterns of European beech seem to be complex, as contrasting results regarding the relative effect of phenotypic plasticity and genetic variation in trait variation have been reported. Here, we used a large translocation experiment comprising more than 15,500 seedlings in three regions of Germany to investigate local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity in beech. We found low population differentiation regarding plant survival, and plant height increment, but high phenotypic plasticity for these traits. Survival showed a positive correlation with temperature variables and a less pronounced and negative correlation with precipitation-related variables. This suggests a predominant effect of temperature and growing degree days on the survival of beech seedlings under moderate drought stress. The high phenotypic plasticity may help beech to cope with changing environmental conditions, albeit increasing drought stress may make adaptive changes necessary in the long term

The role of context in Müller-Lyer illusion: The case of negative Müller-Lyer illusion

    No full text
The Müller-Lyer illusion is one of the most prominent geometrical-optical illusions that have been the subjectof experimental investigation throughout a century. Like most optical illusions the Müller-Lyer illusion is causedby an appropriate context - inward or outward fins that act in a specific manner. These fins either prolong or shortenthe central line placed between the fins. In this study, we manipulated the context by varying the presentation ofthe illusion parts, which led to the negative effect of Müller-Lyer illusion. Here we disassociated the context, i.e.,the fins that create the illusion, from the lines the length of which needed to be assessed. Firstly, the fins were presentedalone for 10 seconds, than the line would appear alone for 100 ms. In such situations the phenomenon ofillusion emerges in an opposite direction: the line that temporally succeeded the inward fins seemed longer, whilethe line succeeding the outward fins seemed shorter. An experiment with three experimental situations was carriedout. Twenty participants took part in the experiment, in three different experimental situations. The size of the illusionwas measured using the method of constant stimuli, which was also used to determine the point of subjectiveequality. The analysis confirmed the described effect which was found to be significant when compared to two othersituations: the control situation and the standard Müller-Lyer illusion situation. The negative Müller-Lyer illusionis possibly caused by a kind of after effect, which occurred by prolonged gazing at the fins and/or by fatigue of theappropriate selective angle sensitive cells. Such findings implicate that angle sensitive cells might be active in theemergence of the standard Müller-Lyer illusion

Is optimal resource partitioning theory applicable to water‐limited mature trees?

    No full text
Optimal resource partitioning theory predicts that plants should increase the ratio between water absorbing and transpiring surfaces under short water supply. An increase in fine root mass and surface area relative to leaf area has frequently been found in herbaceous plants, but supporting evidence from mature trees is scarce and several results are contradictory. In 12 mature Fagus sylvatica forests across a precipitation gradient (820–540 mm yr−1), we tested several predictions of the theory by analysing the dependence of standing fine root biomass, fine root production and fine root morphology on mean annual precipitation (MAP), the precipitation of the study year, and stand structural and edaphic variables. The water storage capacity of the soil (WSC) was included as a covariable by comparing pairs of stands on sandy (lower WSC) and loam-richer soils (higher WSC). Fine root biomass, total fine root surface area, fine root production and the fine root : leaf biomass production ratio markedly increased with reduced MAP and precipitation in the study year, while WSC was only a secondary factor and stand structure had no effect. The precipitation effect on fine root biomass and production was more pronounced in stands on sandy soil with lower WSC, which had, at equal precipitation, a higher fine root biomass and productivity than stands on loam-richer soil. The high degree of allocational plasticity in mature F. sylvatica trees contrasts with a low morphological plasticity of the fine roots. On the more extreme sandy soils, a significant decrease in mean fine root diameter and increase in specific root area with decreasing precipitation were found; a similar effect was absent on the loam-richer soils. Synthesis. In support of optimal partitioning theory, mature Fagus sylvatica trees showed a remarkable allocational plasticity as a long-term response to significant precipitation reduction with a large increase in the size and productivity of the fine root system, while only minor adaptive modifications occurred in root morphology. More severe summer droughts in a future warmer climate may substantially alter the above-/below-ground C partitioning of this tree species with major implications for the forest C cycle

FIGURE 6. Maximum-likelihood trees derived from the four-times analyses (Birky et al. 2010) for 18S (A) and COI (B). Bootstrap frequencies (n = 1000) are shown above the major nodes. Bars to the right of the tree indicate the different species inferred by the four-times rule, the ABGD method at the highest cut-off criterion, and the maximum-likelihood based bPTP analyses, respectively. Provenance of the samples is abbreviated as in Fig. 5. Trees were rooted using Polyarthra remata. The scale bar indicates the average number of substitutions per site per unit time.Published as part of Wilke, Tanja, Ahlrichs, Wilko H. & Bininda-Emonds, Olaf R. Nobel Edebiyat ödülünü 2009 yılında kazanan Herta Müller, 1953 yılında Romanya'nın Almanca konuşulan Banat bölgesinde dünyaya geldi. Herta Müller, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2009, was born in Banat of Romania where German was spoken in 1953. Publication of her books in her own country was forbidden as she clearly criticised the period of Ceausescu in Romania. Herta Müller immigrated to Germany from Romania in the year of 1987. The life of the author, the importance of secret police service and the region of Banat on her life, her place in the literary world and the meaning of her art for today were searched. The novels she wrote up to now, namely "Der Fuchs war damals schon der Jäger", "Herztier", "Heute wäre ich mir lieber nicht begegnet" and "Atemschaukel", were examined under six titles like: Key Issues, Key Figures, Key Motifs, Structure Features and Author's Stylistic Features
