An Eco-Conscious Housing Design Model Based on Co-Evolution
The purpose of this paper is to investigate generative and evolutionary design models by the new idea of co-evolution. Multi-objective optimization is our main concern. A dynamic co-evolution model is presented with detailed description of its application in eco-conscious housing design. Area and solar constraints of housing design problems are considered with maximum architectural area and solar illumination been optimized. We use dynamic niche models based on a fitness-sharing scheme to define energy and fitness functions for the co-evolution system. Early experimental data are presented and analyzed to show the effectiveness of this approach to evolutionary design optimization and its computational implementation of the algorithms. An evolutionary framework for enhancing design
A computational framework for enhancing design in an evolutionary approach with a dynamic hierarchical structure is presented in this paper. This framework can be used as an evolutionary kernel for building computer-supported design systems. It provides computational components for generating, adapting and exploring alternative design solutions at multiple levels of abstraction with hierarchically structured design representations. In this paper, preliminary experimental results of using this framework in several design applications are presented
Supporting Evolution in a Multi-Agent Cooperative Design Environment
New architectures for next-generation of computer-aided design environments need to be distributed, evolutive, and cooperative. This paper presents a multi-agent design environment that supports cooperative and evolutionary design by cooperation of a group of agents. Multi-agent system architecture offers a promising framework with its novel approach for dynamically creating and managing agent communities in widely distributed and ever-changing design environments; while the genetic algorithm based approach provides a foundation for supporting evolutionary and innovative design abilities. The computational and information processing processes involved in. evolutionary and distributed environment are discussed in this paper. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved
Evolutionary Design Systems and Generative Processes
Design tools that aim not only to analyse and evaluate, but also to generate and explore alternative design proposals are now under development. An evolutionary paradigm is presented as a basis for creating such tools. First, the evolutionary paradigm is shown to be the only successful design system on which this new phase of design tool could be based. Secondly, any characterisation of design as a search problem is argued to be a serious misconception. Instead it is proposed that evolutionary design systems should be seen as generative processes that are able to evaluate their own output. Thirdly, a generic framework for generative evolutionary design systems is presented. Fourth, the generative process is introduced as a key element within this generic framework. The role of the environment within this process is fundamental. Finally, the direction of future research within the evolutionary design paradigm is discussed with possible short and long term goals being presented
