    The Tang-Toennies potential for the weakly interacting systems H2 b3Σ+u, H–He 2Σ+, and He2 1Σ+g is extended down to the united atom limit of vanishing internuclear distance. A simple analytic expression connects the united atom limiting potential with the Tang-Toennies potential in the well region. The new potential model is compared with the most recent ab initio calculations for all three systems. The agreement is better than 20% (H2 and He2) or comparable with the differences in the available ab initio calculations (H–He) over six orders of magnitude corresponding to the entire range of internuclear distances

    An Image Based Feature Space and Mapping for Linking Regions and Words

    We propose an image based feature space and define a mapping of both image regions and textual labels into that space. We believe the embedding of both image regions and labels into the same space in this way is novel, and makes object recognition more straightforward. Each dimension of the space corresponds to an image from the database. The coordinates of an image segment(region) are calculated based on its distance to the closest segment within each of the images, while the coordinates of a label are generated based on their association with the images. As a result, similar image segments associated with the same objects are clustered together in this feature space, and should also be close to the labels representing the object. The link between image regions and words can be discovered from their separation in the feature space. The algorithm is applied to an image collection and preliminary results are encouraging

    A Pseudomonas sp. strain uniquely degrades PAHs and heterocyclic derivatives via lateral dioxygenation pathways

    Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic derivatives are organic pollutants that pose a serious health risk to human beings. In this study, a newly isolated Pseudomonas brassicacearum strain MPDS could effectively degrade PAHs and heterocyclic derivatives, including naphthalene, fluorene, dibenzofuran (DBF) and dibenzothiophene (DBT). Notably, strain MPDS is able to degrade fluorene, DBF and DBT uniquely via a lateral dioxygenation pathway, while most reported strains degrade fluorene, DBF and DBT via an angular dioxygenation pathway or co-metabolize them via a lateral dioxygenation pathway. Strain MPDS completely degraded 50 mg naphthalene (in 50 mL medium) in 84 h, and OD600 reached 1.0–1.1; while, it stabilized at OD600 0.5–0.6 with 5 mg fluorene or DBF or DBT. Meanwhile, 65.7% DBF and 32.1% DBT were degraded in 96 h, and 40.3% fluorene was degraded in 72 h, respectively. Through genomic and transcriptomic analyses, and comparative genomic analysis with another DBF degradation strain, relevant gene clusters were predicted, and a naphthalene-degrading gene cluster was identified. This study provides understanding of degradation of PAHs and their heterocyclic derivatives, as well as new insights into the lateral dioxygenation pathway of relevant contaminants

    A 2 h periodic variation in the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1

    Spectroscopy of the low-mass X-ray binary Ser X-1 using the Gran Telescopio Canarias have revealed a ?2 h periodic variability that is present in the three strongest emission lines. We tentatively interpret this variability as due to orbital motion, making it the first indication of the orbital period of Ser X-1. Together with the fact that the emission lines are remarkably narrow, but still resolved, we show that a main-sequence K dwarf together with a canonical 1.4 M? neutron star gives a good description of the system. In this scenario, the most likely place for the emission lines to arise is the accretion disc, instead of a localized region in the binary (such as the irradiated surface or the stream-impact point), and their narrowness is due instead to the low inclination (?10°) of Ser X-1

    Background Attention has recently been directed to a condition termed 'reversed white coat' because of an average 24 h ambulatory blood pressure (BP) uncharacteristically greater than office BP. No data are available, however, on the prevalence of this condition in the general population, as well as on its relationship to BP, age, gender, anti hypertensive treatment and cardiac organ damage. Methods In 3200 individuals (participation rate 64%), randomly selected to be representative of the residents of Monza (Milan, Italy) for sex and decades of age (25 to 74 years), we measured office BP (average of three measurements, sphygmomanometry), ambulatory BP (automatic readings every 20 min, Spacelabs 90207) and left ventricular mass (echocardiography). Results A 'reversed white coat' condition (identified when 24-h average ambulatory systolic, diastolic or mean were higher than the corresponding office values) was seen in 15% (diastolic) to 26% (systolic) of the population as a whole. Prevalence was greater (34-40%) when the difference between office and daytime BP was considered but in both instances it remained less than the prevalence of the white-coat phenomenon. A reversed white-coat condition was similarly frequent in males and females and showed a steep reduction with age and increasing office BP values. Prevalence was greater in hypertensive subjects in whom treatment achieved BP control than in untreated or unsatisfactorily treated individuals. Within each quartile of 24-h or office BP, left ventricular mass index adjusted for demographic and biochemical values was similar in reversed white coat versus the remaining subjects. The absence of any association with left ventricular hypertrophy scores against the clinical significance of this phenomenon
