    This dissertation is the product of a research project3, which focuses on the study of VoIP protocols' security issues. It starts with the review of the three VoIP protocols. Then, it introduces some common security concepts used in VoIP security. After that, the dissertation concentrates on the study of SIP security. The build-in security mechanisms of SIP protocol are investigated. Two general security solutions for SIP protocol, that is, PGP/MIME and S/MIME, based on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), are reviewed and analyzed. We further point out their advantages and disadvantages for SIP security. In order to overcome the disadvantages of these two solutions, a new solution for SIP security is proposed. The new solution makes use of the One-Time Password (OTP) scheme on the application layer and the TLS scheme on the transport layer.     A variety of authenticated key establishment protocols for mobile applications had been proposed in recent years. One of the purposes of this research project is to examine and analyze some of the more prominent published authenticated key establishment protocols with regards to security and efficiency. In this research project, a number of goals pertaining to security in authentication process are identified and the authenticated key establishment protocols are then evaluated using these goals. In addition, the authenticated key establishment protocols are also simulated using known cryptosystems such as RSA and AES. Data from these simulations are then used to compare the efficiency of the various protocols. The authenticated key establishment protocols are then compared and further analyzed, particularly with regards to mobile efficiency.     With the advancement of wireless networks in recent years, group communication via wireless networks is becoming an increasingly popular research area due to the growth of group oriented applications such as video conferencing, pay-per-view media distribution, real-time information services and collaborative work in wireless networks. Besides civilian applications mentioned above, group-oriented applications and protocols are also used widely in military operations. However, group communication via wireless networks takes place over radio waves, the common mode of communication in wireless networks, causes major security concern as radio transmission can be easily eavesdropped. Solutions such as IPSec that provides end-to-end secure communications between two communicating parties and user nodes would require many different secret keys to communicate with every other node in the network. A better solution is to use a shared secret group key for secure group communications in a wireless network. To achieve this, the nodes in the wireless network will first run a group key management (GKM) protocol to establish a common group key. This key will then be used as a secret key for symmetric-key cryptography to encrypt messages that they wish to broadcast to the wireless network.     Electronic cash is an electronic payment system which enables secure payment transactions without revealing customers' identity. This thesis starts with an overview of the concepts related to electronic payment, especially electronic cash, discussing its transactions and state-of-the-art techniques. Then, after an overview of electronic cash, I will analyze several electronic cash schemes against potential attacks. In this thesis, I will propose O-Cash, the fair traceable electronic cash in wallet with observers, which supports coin tracing and owner tracing as well as self-deanonymization. This scheme achieves prior restraint of double-spending using observers, detection of double-spender's identity using cryptographic methods in case observers are broken, and fair tracing in case crimes take place. Then, I will further propose a new electronic cash model SignCash, where electronic coins are generated by customers instead of banks. This model offers unique tradeoff between credit card systems and conventional off-line electronic cash systems, and provides anonymity to customers and higher security level than credit card systems. In addition, it enables customers to generate electronic coins which are authorized by the bank, and is more convenient for customers to use. Last but not least, I will compare the proposed electronic cash system with VisaCash and eNETS, and discuss the implementation aspects.MASTER OF ENGINEERING (EEE
