    Building an Android application for Microsoft Imagine Cup 2015

    In this globalized society, everyone owns a smartphone and it plays an important role in his or her life. With high-speed network, information and news are at his or her fingertips. Even though, Apple owns a large market in smartphones sale, android phones are catching up in terms of market shares as the next leader in smartphones. As such, Android market is a good platform to develop applications for the greater good of people. This final year project’s objective is to develop an Android application to help the needy. The objective is to make use of the connectivity of this world to bring charity organisations, or donors and the needy closer. The main idea of this application is to allow donors to donate their unwanted items and upload onto the database for the charity groups to collect the items and distribute to the needy that needs it most. This project is done in a group of 3 under the supervision of Dr Tan Chee Wah Wesley. Each of the group members has different tasks, namely developing Android application, Windows Phone application and lastly, Web application and Server. The Android application covers two main aspects. The first aspect is to allow users to log in as well as to submit a donation through the application. The second aspect is to view the “Wishlist”, which are requests given from the needy to the charity groups. The outcome of this project is, as this is a first application of its kind in Singapore; it is a good initiative to bridge the gap between donors and the needy.     Food waste is highly detrimental to the environment, and everyone is trying to find a sustainable solution. Food waste initiatives such as purchasing so-called "ugly fruits" are introduced, among others. This project dives deeper into determining what is causing the massive quantity of food waste and aims to develop a comprehensive smart supermarket system that will aid in the global fight against food waste. The supermarket system in this project focuses on consumer-level features that enable individuals to keep track of their household food wastage by monitoring expiration dates. The project proposes a consumer-level application that helps the user in monitoring the expiration dates of their products while also encouraging them to reduce food waste by giving relevant recipes based on their inventory. Under the supervision and guidance of Dr Tan Chee Wah Wesley, the project is carried out in a group of three students. Each group member will be responsible for a particular aspect pertaining to the application's frontend, backend, machine learning, and data mining. The product will then be submitted to the 2022 Microsoft Imagine Cup competition.     The role of cell surface heparan sulfate in enterovirus A71 infections and the development of antiviral agents targeting viral attachment and RNA translation initiation / Tan Chee Wah

    Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) is the main causative agent of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). Recent EV-A71 outbreaks in Asia-Pacific were not limited to mild HFMD, but were associated with neurological complications including aseptic meningitis, brainstem encephalitis and deaths. The absence of licensed therapeutics for clinical use has intensified research into anti-EV-A71 development. Since virus-host receptor interaction is the first essential event during virus infection, inhibitors that block this event could act as potential therapeutics. EV-A71 VP1 capsid protein is involved in viral-host receptor interactions and carries multiple receptor binding sites. Screening of 95 overlapping peptides covering the entire EV-A71 VP1 capsid protein was hypothesized to identify potential viral attachment inhibitors, as well as unknown receptors. Out of 95 overlapping peptides, a peptide designated as SP40 peptide significantly inhibited EV-A71-induced cytopathic effect, plaque formation, RNA synthesis and viral protein synthesis. Mechanism of action analysis revealed that SP40 peptide is not virucidal, but blocked EV-A71 attachment to the cell surface. Alanine scanning analysis showed that positively charged amino acids were critical for the antiviral activities. Sequence analysis revealed that SP40 peptide carried a heparan sulfate-specific binding domain (-RRKV-), which led to the hypothesis that EV-A71 could use cell surface heparan sulfate as an attachment receptor. Highly sulfated heparin, dextran sulfate and suramin significantly inhibited EV-A71 infections in a dosedependent manner. Interference with heparan sulfate biosynthesis either by sodium chlorate treatment or through transient knockdown of N-deacetylase/N-sulfotransferase- 1 and exostosin-1 expression reduced EV-A71 infection. Enzymatic removal of cell surface heparan sulfate by heparinase I/II/III inhibited EV-A71 infection. Biochemistry analysis revealed that EV-A71 interacts with heparan sulfate through electrostatic interactions. These findings support the hypothesis and confirmed that EV-A71 uses iv cell surface heparan sulfate as an attachment receptor. Other than the attachment inhibitor, this study also tested DNA-like antisense-mediated morpholino oligomers as anti-EV-A71 agents. Two octaguanidinium-conjugated morpholino oligomers (vivo- MOs) targeting EV-A71 internal ribosome entry site (IRES) significantly inhibited EVA71 infections at multiple time points, in a dose-dependent manner. EV-A71 resistance to vivo-MO-1 arose after 8 blind passages in the presence of increased concentrations of vivo-MO-1, but not vivo-MO-2. A single nucleotide mutation at the extreme 3’ end (T to C substitution at position 533) was sufficient to confer vivo-MO-1 resistance. In mismatch tolerance analysis, results demonstrated that the positions and the number of mismatches affect vivo-MO-1 efficacy. A single mismatch at the center of the targeted region was more tolerable compared to a mismatch at the end of the targeted region. In conclusion, this study has identified an antiviral peptide that potentially blocks viral attachment to heparan sulfate, and led to the discovery of a novel EV-A71 attachment receptor. This study also identified two antisense-mediated vivo-MOs targeted sites for antiviral intervention. This study suggests that blocking of viral attachment and viral RNA translation are good strategies for antiviral intervention

    This report documented the details of the author’s Final Year Project, Design and Development of a University Education Information Sharing System. The application is tailored for pre-university students to help them collect reliable information for well-informed decision making for their university education in Singapore. Meanwhile, the author also built up a forum for the students for interactions, University students can also make use of the system as a reference. This report included the whole life cycle of the application, from the initial phases of literature review and requirement analysis, the selection of methodology and the system design and development process, and testing and deployment, the challenges and space for improvement, to the future enhancements and business opportunities that are available to the application. In order to facilitate a basis for discussion on the applications that are currently offered in the market, an in-depth market research has been made. Meanwhile, there is a detailed elaboration on the system overview, coding about functionalities and testing and deployment.     The video game production industry has been developing rapidly in recent years. In addition to the evolving technologies (advanced Artificial Intelligence, photo-realistic graphics, Virtual Reality), the content of video games are becoming more and more diverse. While gameplay remains as the foundation, more and more video games are incorporating elements, including storytelling, real-life simulation and emotional experiences (e.g., horror). This final year project aims to design and develop a 2D story-driven game. This project is a collaboration among 3 students, Wang Qiyu, Du Zhanke and the author. The author focuses solely on developing the Board Game, which is a replayable mini-game incorporated into the main game. The development includes designing and building modular and scalable code architecture, implementing game logics (player and enemy AI) with C# in Unity, and implementing the User Interface.     Game Development World Championship (GDWC) is an annual game development competition for game developer teams of different background, ranging from hobby categories for amateur game developers, to studios with 3A titles. The purpose of this final year project is to design and deliver a playable demo of a 2D Role-playing Game (RPG), which will be submitted to GDWC 2022. This is a collaborative project for 3 students, Zhanke Du, Yifan Yao, and Qiyu Wang, who is the author of this report. The author was mainly responsible for the design aspect of the game, including the design of gameplay, writing Non-player Character (NPC) dialogues and mails, creating worlds’ and characters’ concept art and producing in-game assets. The author also contributed to the programming side of the game by adding and testing the audio, including SFX and BGM into the game.     HIV viremia is associated with compromised SARS-CoV-2 Beta variant neutralization

    Abstract Background SARS-CoV-2 infection may be associated with worse clinical outcomes in people with HIV (PWH). We report anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses in COVID-19 hospitalized patients in Durban, South Africa during the second SARS-CoV-2 infection wave dominated by the Beta (B.1.351) variant. Methods Thirty-four participants with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were followed up with weekly blood sampling to examine antibody levels and neutralization potency against SARS-CoV-2 variants. Participants included 18 PWH, of whom 11 were HIV viremic. Results SARS-CoV-2 specific antibody concentrations were generally lower in viremic PWH relative to virologically suppressed PWH and HIV-negative participants and neutralization of the Beta variant was 4.9-fold lower in viremic PWH. Most HIV-negative participants and ART-suppressed PWH also neutralized the Delta (B.1.617.2) variant, whereas the majority of viremic PWH did not. CD4 counts <500 cells/μL were associated with lower frequencies of IgG and IgA seroconversion. In addition, there was a high correlation between a surrogate virus neutralization test and live virus neutralization against ancestral SARS-CoV-2 virus in both PWH and HIV-negative individuals, but correlation decreased for the Beta variant neutralization in PWH. Conclusions HIV viremia was associated with reduced Beta variant neutralization. This highlights the importance of HIV suppression in maintaining an effective SARS-CoV-2 neutralization response

    Over the years, the advancement of technology has been rapid and this creates convenience in our daily life. For instance, the invention of automobile has helped to reduce the time spent, travelling from one place to another. However it has led to injury and even fatality when drivers are not careful. Accidents happen when drivers are unaware of the surroundings, due to laziness, complacency of their skills or feeling fatigue. Through the development of Driver Assistant System (DAS), 4 sensors are installed at left, right, front as well as at the rear of the vehicle respectively. These sensors will help to determine whether to speed up or slow down the vehicle and send a text message to alert the driver through his/her mobile phone. The aim of this report is to outline what the author had done and achieved throughout the project phase. This includes from purchasing the hardware components to the implementation and testing phase of DAS, and the searching of the tools that were required for the completion of this project. In conclusion, due to the complexity of implementation on the actual vehicle as well as time constraint, the author has designed a simulation software to conduct appropriate tests to obtain the results needed in this project.Bachelor of Engineerin

    This is an Android location-based alarm mobile application which allows users to set an alarm on their mobile devices that will be triggered when they get closer to their selected bus stations. In Singapore there are more than 300 SBS bus services and 100 SMRT bus routes. The public bus service is the most cost-effective way to travel in Singapore. This application can be easily used with the support of Global Positioning System (GPS) on Android devices. The only two things that the users need to know is the bus service numbers and their destination stops. This application allows a user to take advantage of the available public bus data as an intuitive bus stop alarm application. This report firstly provides an introduction of Android platform and the motivation of this project. Second chapter is a detail background of Android operating system and a comparison between existing related application and my application. Third chapter introduces application structure and related services provided by Android system. The fourth chapter discusses how the application works within a life cycle, the important the Application Programming Interface (API), intent and services. Then there is a detailed analysis and discussion on implementations of the features in the proposed location-based alarm application in chapter five and six. The User Interface (UI) is user-friendly and the use of application is straight forward and clear. The whole application system has been tested and the functions are working as desired.
