    History of the steel industry in the Port Talbot Area 1900-1988

    This thesis examines the history of steelmaking at Port Talbot in South Wales from the start of modern steelmaking in 1902 to 1988. Although the British steel industry has been studied at national level, few studies have looked at company level and fewer on plant level studies. By studying this large and significant steelmaking site this thesis sheds light on the interaction between national constraints and local forces for change or inertia and on the interaction of plant management, industry leadership and national Government policies. A number of themes are examined including issues of locational inertia and change; technological innovation and choice; relationships to, and changes in markets; products and demand levels; the role of the state; and issues of decision making. The later includes managers, management structure, conflict among managers, corporate rivalries, relationships with banks and Government, and within nationalised industries. The thesis covers the origins of modern steelmaking at Port Talbot in the 1900s, its expansion and integration with iron making during World War One. It looks at Port Talbot within the framework of heavy steel rationalisation in the 1920s and the inconclusive manoeuvrings to build a strip mill in the 1930s. After World Ward Two Port Talbot emerged as Britain’s leading strip mill through a complex interplay of technological and locational choices including Government pressure and corporate rivalries. The boom years of the 1950s were followed by consolidation and modernisation in the 1960s through the Government inspired over expansion of the strip mill sector. After re-nationalisation in 1967 Port Talbot became involved in internal struggles with rival strip mills over investment. At each stage the thesis uses the detailed local adaptation and innovation within that context. The thesis draws on extensive primary sources including the National Archives, Government Reports and documents, company records, Bank of England papers, trade papers, technical journals, trade union papers and local newspapers. The secondary literature on the steel industry is discussed and revised where appropriate and this study adds a full-scale plant level industrial history of one of the most important British steelworks to this literature

    Metal Hexaborides with Sc, Ti or Mn

Comparison of well-determined single crystal data for stoichiometric, or near-stoichiometric, metal hexaborides con-firms previously identified lattice parameter trends using powder diffraction. Trends for both divalent and trivalent forms suggest that potential new forms for synthesis include Sc and Mn hexaborides. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations for KB6, CaB6, YB6, LaB6, boron octahedral clusters and Sc and Mn forms show that the shapes of bonding orbitals are defined by the boron framework. Inclusion of metal into the boron framework induces a reduction in energy ranging from 1 eV to 6 eV increasing with ionic charge. For metals with d1 character, such a shift in energy brings a doubly degenerate band section along with the G-M reciprocal space direction within the conduction bands tangential to the Fermi surface. ScB6 band structure and density of states calculations show directions and gap characteristics similar to those of YB6 and LaB6. These calculations for ScB6 suggest that it may be possible to realize superconductivity in this compound if synthesized

    Phonon dispersion anomalies and superconductivity in metal\ud substituted MgB2

    We have calculated the extent of the E<sub>2g</sub> phonon anomaly for Mg<sub>1−x</sub>M<sub>x</sub>B<sub>2</sub> where M = Sc, Ti, Cd and Ba for 0 < x < 1 using <i>ab initio</i> DFT models with the LDA and GGA functionals. Using superlattice models along the <i>c</i> axis to represent metal substitution in MgB<sub>2</sub>, we show that phonon dispersion (PD) plots vary significantly with x, in particular, the nature and extent of the phonon anomaly around the origin, <b>G</b>, of the reciprocal lattice. Measurement of this phonon anomaly along the <b>G-K</b> and <b>G-M</b> directions provides an estimate of the thermal energy, T<sub>δ</sub>, of the anomaly, which approximates experimentally determined T<sub>c</sub> within standard error for Sc and Ti substitution. We demonstrate that substitutions of Cd and Ba in MgB<sub>2</sub> show a higher calculated T<sub>δ</sub> than MgB<sub>2</sub> by more than 20 K. Syntheses of these Cd and Ba compositions are not extant and may not be possible given the limited solubility of metals in MgB<sub>2</sub>. Nevertheless, <i>ab initio</i> DFT models of phonon behaviour in AlB<sub>2</sub>–type structures provide an effective tool for prediction of physical properties and for design of new materials

    Solitary juvenile polyps: not a marker for subsequent malignancy

    Background: Solitary juvenile polyps are considered benign. In contrast, juvenile polyposis is associated with malignancy and poor long-term outcome. Recent reports suggest that solitary juvenile polyps may also undergo both adenomatous and malignant change. The long-term outcome of patients with solitary juvenile polyps is unknown. Patients are treated conservatively and discharged from follow-up. The present study was designed to examine the incidence of cancer and mortality of these patients, comparing their life expectancy with that of the general population. Methods: The outcome of 82 patients with a solitary juvenile polyp between 1958 and 1982 was examined by life table analysis. Patients were traced through the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys for death and cancer registration. Patients were compared with an age- and sex-matched group of the general population. Results: The relative risk of dying for patients who have previously had a solitary juvenile polyp in comparison with the general population was found to be 0.66 (95% confidence interval, 0.34-1.14). There was only one case of colorectal cancer. Conclusions: Patients with a solitary juvenile polyp are not at increased risk of dying of or developing colorectal cancer and do not require further follow-up or investigations.</p

    Phonon dispersion models for MgB2 with application of pressure

    We evaluate, via the Local Density and the Generalised Gradient Approximations to the Density Functional Theory (DFT), the change in form and extent of the E<sub>2g</sub> phonon anomaly of MgB<sub>2</sub> with increase in applied pressure up to 20 GPa. Ab initio DFT calculations on the phonon dispersion (PD) for MgB<sub>2</sub> show a phonon anomaly symmetrically displaced around Γ, the reciprocal lattice origin. This anomaly is related to nesting between diametrically opposite sides of tubular elements of Fermi surfaces, which correspond to sigma bonding and run approximately parallel to the Γ–A reciprocal space direction. The anomaly is parallel to Γ–A and along Γ–M and Γ–K. The extent of the E<sub>2g</sub> phonon anomaly, δ, along Γ–M and Γ–K is a measure of the thermal energy, Tδ, that matches within error the experimental onset superconducting transition temperature, Tc. Ab initio DFT calculations with pressure for -5 GPa < P < 20 GPa show a linear reduction in Tδ that closely matches experimental Tc values for MgB<sub>2</sub>. For phonon-mediated superconductors with AlB2–type structures, the thermal energy of the phonon anomaly, Tδ, is a reliable predictor of Tc
