Japanese SMEs and the credit guarantee system after the global financial crisis

    No full text
This paper provides a brief explanation of the Japanese public credit guarantee system and analyzes what role it played during the global financial crisis. The author conducted a questionnaire survey of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Aichi Prefecture, the prefecture most seriously hit by the crisis, in collaboration with the Aichi-ken Credit Guarantee Corporation. Using the survey, which provides valuable information about the usage of the credit guarantee program, this paper finds that the credit guarantee system was effective in protecting the economy from collapsing. The system was so generous that now almost all SMEs want it to remain unchanged. However, as the generous system brings heavy financial burdens on the Japanese government and, more seriously, discourages firms and banks from improving their efficiencies, the author insists that reforms, such as limiting the target and the guarantee coverage, are inevitable

Co-movement between Commodity Market and Equity Market: Does Commodity Market Change?

    No full text
This paper, using Japanese market data, finds that although the correlation between equity markets and commodity market used to be negative or almost zero before around 2006, it has increased significantly after the global financial crisis in Autumn of 2008. In this sense, the commodity market lost its character as an alternative asset. However, the author argues that it is too early to conclude so because of several reasons

Freezing tolerance in alpine plants as assessed by the FDA-staining method

P(論文)We established a method employing fluorescein diacetate (FDA)-staining with a laser scan microscope for evaluation of the freezing tolerance of leaf mesophyll cells, and applied it to assessments of freezing tolerance in leaves of nine alpine plants, Arcterica nana, Cassiope lycopodioides, Diapensia lapponica, Empetrum nigrum, Loiseleuria procumbens, Phyllodoce nipponica, Rhododendron aureum, Schizocodon soldanelloides, and Vaccinium vitis-idaea, which naturally occur on Mt. Iwo (36°00′N, 138°22′W, 2760 m a.s.l.) in 2001. The results obtained with the FDA-staining method were strongly correlated with those of the electrolyte-leakage test, suggesting that this method is highly reliable. Leaf mesophyll cells in all these plants collected in early September survived after freezing at -5°C, but did not survive below -30°C. The survival ratio at subzero temperatures, ranging from -5 to -16°C, varied among the species. On the other hand, all the mesophyll cells of the plants collected in the middle of November survived freezing at -30°C. However, the survival ratio decreased after freezing at -80°C in Phyllodoce nipponica and Empetrum nigrum. Using the FDA-staining method, we were able to confirm the increase of the freezing tolerance of alpine plants from September to November. Advantages of the new method are discussed.departmental bulletin pape

In the fields of antique maps of the Edo era, studies on the manuscript maps of the castle towns have been rather neglected, compared with those of the printed maps. There may be two ways to treat the antique maps of the castle towns. One is to classify them by comparison, and the other is to inquire various maps of an individual town historically, the way the author adopts in this article. He takes Kanazawa, the castle town of the largest han 藩. Among many antique maps of that town, the splendid map presented to the bakufu 幕府 in 1668, several maps made by Takesada Arisawa 有沢武貞 who was a samurai of that han, the precise survey completed in 1829 and some others are important. There are increasingly more maps in the nineteenth century. The author divides them into two parts, that is thematic maps and general maps, and furthermore subdivides the latter mainly according to the degree of relation to the maps by Arisawa
