Vision-based estimation of manipulation forces by deep learning of laparoscopic surgical images obtained in a porcine excised kidney experiment
In robot-assisted surgery, in which haptics should be absent, surgeons experience haptics-like sensations as “pseudo-haptic feedback”. As surgeons who routinely perform robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery, we wondered if we could make these “pseudo-haptics” explicit to surgeons. Therefore, we created a simulation model that estimates manipulation forces using only visual images in surgery. This study aimed to achieve vision-based estimations of the magnitude of forces during forceps manipulation of organs. We also attempted to detect over-force, exceeding the threshold of safe manipulation. We created a sensor forceps that can detect precise pressure at the tips with three vectors. Using an endoscopic system that is used in actual surgery, images of the manipulation of excised pig kidneys were recorded with synchronized force data. A force estimation model was then created using deep learning. Effective detection of over-force was achieved if the region of the visual images was restricted by the region of interest around the tips of the forceps. In this paper, we emphasize the importance of limiting the region of interest in vision-based force estimation tasks.Citation: Kimihiko Masui, Naoto Kume, Megumi Nakao, Toshihiro Magaribuchi, Akihiro Hamada, Takashi Kobayashi, Atsuro Sawada, Vision-based estimation of manipulation forces by deep learning of laparoscopic surgical images obtained in a porcine excised kidney experiment, Scientific Reports, 14(1), 2024-04-27, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-024-60574-

Comparison of Thermal Design of Horyu-Series and Results of Thermal Vacuum Testing
JapanViet NamKyushu Institute of TechnologyVNSC107ICES107: Thermal Design of Microsatellites, Nanosatellites, and PicosatellitesVienna, AustriaHirokazu Masui, Kyushu Institute of Technology, JapanThe 46th International Conference on Environmental Systems was held in Vienna, Austria, USA on 10 July 2016 through 14 July 2016.Mengu Cho, Kyushu Institute of Technology, JapanTakashi Yamasaki, Kyushu Institute of Technology, JapanThin Tang Long, Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC), VietnamThis paper describes the thermal design and testing of Horyu-4 to be launched in 2016. Kyushu Institute of Technology (KIT) has been developing nano-satellite since 2006. 2 nano-satellites (Horyu-2) and Shinen-2)) have been launched so far. In 2016, Horyu-4 will be launched by JAXA H2A rocket. Horyu-4 satellite project was started from 2013 and a basic design of Horyu-4 is based on that of Horyu-2 launched in 2012. Horyu-4 is 30cm-cube satellite and its weight is 12 kg. A main mission of Horyu-4 is observation of discharge phenomena on solar cell in space. Main changes from Horyu-2 are (1) increasing in weight with increasing mounted mission components, (2) changing of orbit inclination from 98.1˚ to 51.6˚, and (3) changing of orbit altitude from 680 km to 575 km. The different point in a thermal design of Horyu-2 and 4 from a conventional nano and micro-satellite is a wide temperature fluctuation due to low density. Horyu-4 adopts a passive thermal control. Surface properties of external panels and insulation between internal circuit boards and structure frames were adjusted to ensure acceptable temperature ranges including margin for internal circuit boards. To verify the thermal design and operation of bas system and components, thermal vacuum tests were conducted in each development phase.
This paper will explain the detail of Horyu-4’s thermal design comparing with Horyu-2’s design and on-orbit data. In addition, results and testing method for thermal vacuum testing will be reported. Finally, flight prediction data and on-orbit data will be compared

Cytoplasmic factors that control nuclear behavior in mammalian oocytes: A re-evaluation of studies performed as a student of Yoshio Masui
Studies performed by the author in the laboratory of Dr Yoshio Masui are reviewed and interpreted in the light of subsequent findings. The first series of studies indicated that that chromosome condensation during meiotic maturation of mouse oocytes is controlled initially by a stable protein that decays during maturation and subsequently by an unstable protein synthesized after germinal vesicle breakdown. Cyclin B is present in immature oocytes, becomes partially degraded near metaphase I and then re-accumulates, suggesting that this may be protein whose activity was inferred from the original results. The second series of experiments indicated that factors which appear in the oocyte cytoplasm during maturation are able to remodel the sperm into metaphase-like chromosomes, and that the supply of these factors is limited. Recent work indicates that these factors are required for the assembly of histones onto the sperm DNA, and has identified two molecular species, mNAP-1 and NPM-3, known to promote replication-independent chromatin assembly in somatic cells, that are expressed in oocyte
