Vers une géographie sociale «augmentée» ? Réflexions liminaires
Communication vectors are to be understood in the broad sense: from television to daily press, from sms to forums (etc.) and they can be both containers and contents. Indeed, they are simultane-ously instrument (with their own structures, organizations, production methods...) and information, itself the product and result of a context, of an history (political, social, cultural, economic...) and eventually of tensions or even conflicts... We can also specify the nature of in-formation: disinfor-mation, non-information, counter-information (etc.); here we introduce another level of the reflec-tion developed in this work, namely the stakes and democratic challenges, the relations (and exer-cise) of power inside these non-conventional communications. Taking the cyborg metaphor as a reference, we may consider cyberspace as a «traditional» space expanded by means of technological innovations, with innovative features. An essential element in any space – and therefore also in cy-berspace – is that of power. For this reason it appears necessary to reflect on the new articulations of power and on the actors who act in cyberspace: power and actors are relevant in shaping spatial configurations, and this happens at different scales.
The impact of this information spreading (private or public, individual or collective, entertaining or educational ...) also depends on the receiver, that is to say the one who looks, reads and receives and depends on all consequent reactions, which can materialize under various forms, in the «virtual» space as well as in the «real» space (performative dimension of media); the almost «fusional» interactions between the two spaces show it clearly - the flash mob is a perfect example. The com-plex thus shaped is the object of research - the issue of «non-conventional communications» - and it is difficult to consider one single aspect alone, as they are all strictly interlaced.
Faced with this multiform and multi-scalar reality, the geographer is obliged to think about the sta-tus of the space today. To contribute to this reflection, it’s interesting to go over the different con-ceptions - or different phases, depending on the point of view – of the conceptualization of the spa-tial dimension (from Kantian space to territory). Which is the spatial dimension of the nowadays geographer or better how can he integrate this «new» cyber-space evolution to his «traditional» conception of space? The virtual dimension has different facets merging inevitably with «reality». It’s not a question of opposing virtual to real world or virtual to real space, but to consider them in their continuities and distinctions, in their complementarities and their retroactions or even in their conflicts. Unconventional communications are not only realized by new technologies: even the more traditional media can impact heavily on configurations of cyberspace, or even in the way the cyberspace is perceived. In a in a similar framework, even democracy and the participatory forms are being revolutionized, opening up new opportunities and new risks that are analyzed from different perspectives by the various essays in the volume. Even social geography is «surrounded» by these opportunities and risks, that create a «new relationship» with studied items. That is sure: the exertion of power and competition between different types of power, reveal and reflect oneselves in the medium. May we really consider accomplished a social research that don’t get (or don’t seek) an «impact» on the social context studied
The life and career of Sixto Rodríguez, the American folk-singer born in Detroit in 1942, weave together two different places. On the one hand, we find Detroit where at the turn of the Sixties Rodríguez recorded two albums without success. On the other, there is Cape Town where unknown to Rodríguez his music became very influential and its subversive contents found an unexpected space of resonance.
This paper aims at investigating the double geography emerging from this astonishing musical biography. The analysis will focus on the complex relationship between musical practices and spatial formations, examining how power geometries shape and carve the field of their mutual production. If the failure of Rodríguez in the United States unveils the race and class connotation of the folk music industry, in the apartheid South Africa his songs seem to be capable of articulating political subjectivities and opening up a space for cultural critique. It is exploring the distance between these two musical geographies that we will try to reflect on the intersections between spatiality, politics and music cultur

I detriti dell’anima. Geografie musicali diasporiche nel Mediterraneo
The bond between geography and music is unaccountably rare until the 90’s. After
the Cultural Turn geographers began to explore music according to the sense of place.
This was done through either a phenomenological approach or a travelling theory. This
article examines the ways music and musicians produce places in terms of homogeneity
or through the spaces of diasporas. Some music maps want to show the homogeneity of
people, recalling the deep bond between music and territory. Others argue that music
should be investigated as a counter-history where the musician’s spaces would be
linked to his/her knowledge and sensitivity of mobility. Both the artists the article
explores are diasporic voices. They are deliberately suspended between Africa and
Europe, in a Mediterranean space that we can consider as a third space. Their stories,
deeply different, tell us about how multiple identities are built through music
Geografia sociale e democrazia La sfida della comunicazione
Il confronto fra gruppi e individui, progetti e interessi, culture e valori genera specifiche organizzazioni dello spazio geografico, dà forma allo spazio.
CULTURAL AND IDEOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS OF CRIME SERIES IN EUROPE AND AMERICA. SOCIO-SPATIAL TENSIONS OF TERRITORY, BETWEEN FICTION AND REALTY.
This contribution analyzes the crim series and especially thei tendency to tell about landscapes and to witness the socio-poitical tensions which, by sure, appear in different urban and rural areas and can shape territories and social contexts. In a gepographical perspective, we selected series which refer to a "reale" territory. Territroy in which stories take pkace, narrative is developed and characters' identy and social status is built.
For the North American context, it's The Wire series takin place in Baltimore, a city tahat with a wide range of characters (not only plicemen and cirmilans) plays the role of symbol of the contradictions of American urban context of the new millennium.
This contribution analyzes the crime series and especially their tendency to tell about landscapes and to witness the socio-political tensions which, by sure, appear in different urban and rural areas and can shape territories and social contexts. Being difficult to approach all possible aspects, we have chosen to focus on the main lines of cultural variations related to European and American traditions (class struggle, problems of equilibrium between tradition and modernity, etc.). In a geographical perspective, we selected series which refer to a «real» territory. Territory in which stories take place, narrative is developed and characters’ identity and social status is built.
Two series. For the North American context, it’s The Wire, series taking place in Baltimore, a city that with a wide range of characters (not only policemen and criminals) plays the role of symbol of the contradictions of American urban context of the new millennium. The second, Midsomer Murders, contrast for the difference of continent but also for his immersion in English countryside, so rich in small towns, and emphasizes the performative dimension of some (TV) films.
