Violent Communication and Verbal Deception in Ben Jonson's "Volpone" and "The Alchemist"
No full textOne of the features of Jonsonian comedies is the high concentration of verbal violence. Jonson himself was known for having a fairly aggressive personality, as he passionately took part in the literary disputes of his time. His predilection for violent public communication was also well known. What should also be stressed, however, is the importance that Jonson gave to the study of the most conflictual aspects of human communication and the way it can deteriorate into downright destructive abuse. In this essay, the linguistic approach to deception will centre on the knaves’ verbal ability to manipulate their victims and their victims’ beliefs. "The Alchemist" and "Volpone" are two plays that provide sample strategies of verbal deceit. The article also proposes to refer to the Pragmatics of Communication of the Palo Alto group, since many concepts drawn from the theory (for example complementarity and the double bind) can be applied to the study of theatrical communication. The author identifies three patterns of deceptive communication used by the swindlers in the plays: adulation and praise of the desired object, one-directional communication, misrepresentation of the nature of the relationship between the knaves
Valutazione in campo di modelli di simulazione per la difesa guidataantiperonosporica della vite - Andamento epidemico 2003
No full textI mutamenti intervenuti, durante l’ultimo ventennio, nelle strategie di difesa hanno determinato la necessità di approfondire lo studio dell’eziologia ed epidemiologia di alcuni patogeni che determinano gravi perdite produttive su vite e olivo, colture di rilevante interesse per l’agricoltura umbra. Una delle aree di ricerca riguarda la validazione nel vigneto di modelli di simulazione delle infezioni di Plasmopara viticola, così da poter fornire a tecnici e viticoltori strumenti innovativi, razionali ed affidabili a cui ricorrere per una migliore gestione della difesa antiperonosporica. Il progetto, giunto all’ ottavo anno di sperimentazione, ha fornito risultati interessanti ed evidenziato la possibilità di poter ridurre il numero di trattamenti per stagione pur garantendo un’adeguata protezione della coltura. E’stato anche allestito un sito web (www.agr.unipg.it/tosi) articolato in due sezioni: la prima, a scopo didattico, riporta notizie ed aggiornamenti su biologia ed epidemiologia di P.viticola e modelli di simulazione, la seconda illustra i risultati della sperimentazione a partire dal 2000 così da favorirne la rapida divulgazione. L’esperienza maturata durante lo svolgimento di questo progetto, che si è avvalso delle potenzialità e della collaborazione tra Università ed Enti Regionali [Regione Umbria, A.R.U.S.I.A. (Agenzia Regionale Umbra per lo Sviluppo e l’Innovazione in Agricoltura), 3A-PTA (Parco Tecnologico Agroalimentare dell’Umbria)] punta alla realizzazione di progetti analoghi allo scopo di estendere l’applicazione di modelli di difesa guidata alle principali crittogame della vite nei comprensori vitivinicoli della Regione, con lo scopo di incrementare e valorizzare un sistema informativo e di assistenza tecnica che possa, in futuro, essere esportato in altre realtà aziendali
Alice and Pinocchio: National Stereotypes and International Classic Fantasy
No full textCarroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, and Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio are among the most famous, most translated books in the world: they are national and international classics. Despite the fact that Pinocchio is widely regarded as tereotypically Italian and Alice as stereotypically British, they have transcended their national origins. The books share generic elements and tropes of international fantasy traditions modulated by their creative moments the Italian Risorgimento and the British high-Victorian period. In their globalization (or glocalization) through translations, adaptations, and Disneyfication, the national characteristics of these books have either been lost, or have been developed into caricatures and stereotypes (Pinocchio, like the Italians, is wild, emotional, and unreliable; Alice, like the English is calm, unemotional and self-assured). This article discusses the ways in which the national stereotypes and national characteristics (inherent or perceived) in these books are absorbed into, or conflict with, international concepts of fantasy

Adolescents and Family Crises in Victorian vs Contemporary Prose Versions of "Romeo and Juliet" for a Female Audience
No full textThe article is concerned with the female readership of Shakespeare’s plays and the way\ud
abridgements, adaptations, and appropriations have mediated and still mediate the cultural relationship\ud
that girls or young women establish with the Bard. The analysis concentrates on the\ud
relationships between generations, and the way narrators focus and comment on the family crisis\ud
originated in the play. By exploring motivation, establishing new links between the characters, and\ud
having narrators pass authoritative moral judgements, all these texts negotiate with well-established\ud
interpretations of the play, often challenging and channelling them into unexpected critical directions.\ud
Although narrative versions of Romeo and Juliet can’t help being loaded with the baggage\ud
of the tragedy’s associations, the female young reader may be captured by the power of narrative\ud
fiction – in the same way, we might imagine, in which Shakespeare was captured by novellas about\ud
the story of the two lovers from Verona. In addition, narrative amplification in the young adult novels\ud
adds a creative impulse to the narrative reconfiguration of the play, implicitly inviting girl readers\ud
to reflect on the differences, and occasional similarities, in the growing up crises of early modern or\ud
medieval teenagers and today’s adolescents
