Tolstoy’s “ABC Book”. A New Approach to Child Development
No full textLeo Tolstoy, the great Russian novelist, was also an excellent educator, teacher and maker of a primer, the ABC Book (Azbuka, 1872). This paper analyzes the ABC Book as the most relevant synthesis of Tolstoy’s pedagogy, based on the concept of child development. Rejecting the psychological theories of his time, Tolstoy promoted a didactic scheme of free and global education (“obrazovanye”) of pupils, seen as real beings with their own needs, attitudes, and feelings. The author of this paper concentrates mainly on the short stories of the ABC Book, which are the best result of Tolstoy’s educational endeavours. In particular, the role of young learners as Tolstoy’s interlocutors and active participants in their upbringing process is emphazised; in fact, pupils are both protagonists and narrators of the stories. In this way, Tolstoy encouraged children’s spiritual growth, since their moral models were other children, the same little heroes of Tolstoy’s tales

at developing the translation competence of learners, is based on the cooperative learning method and general foreign language teaching principles. Using a longitudinal study involving the collection of qualitative and quantitative data, the model was tested in a 42‐hour asynchronous MA course unit. The findings indicate that the proposed didactic model, which brings together translation theory and practice, can successfully promote the development of translation competence in students

No full textThe purpose of this article is to off er new perspectives on the topic of Russian literature and RFL in intercultural terms. Having reviewed literature on RFL for the period from 2008 to 2021, the author concludes that even the most recent studies still rely on an essentialized and stereotyped idea of Russian culture and literature, which has important implications for RFL teaching. It is therefore suggested that only through a rethinking of the role of Russian literature based on new critical and transnational categories can RFL become a means for understanding Russian culture

When intercultural education is problematic: the case of Russian as a foreign language
Get PDFThis paper proposes a reflection on the issues posed by the intercultural teaching of Russian as a foreign language (RFL) in the university context. In particular, after defining the concepts of “interculturalism”/“intercultural education” and outlining an updated picture of research on intercultural education in RFL, two of the greatest problems of RFL intercultural education are presented: on the one hand, the ambiguity of the theoretical treatment of intercultural education (and, thus, of its practical applications) by RFL scholars, and, on the other hand, the often essentialized, if not stereotypical, portrayal of Russian culture in RFL textbooks, which in some cases distort reality. Finally, a possible solution is proposed to resolve these issues and make RFL teaching more intercultural
