The presentation took place during the Afternoon Talks on Islamic Law, a lecture series held regularly on Thursday afternoons at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg
Slavery at the Turn of the Twentieth Century. Hudā Shaʿrāwī’s Memoirs as a Source of Social History?
This chapter aims at contributing to the debate on the role that ego-documents,
including memoirs, can have in reconstructing social practices of the past. Over the last twenty years, there has been a renewed interest in autobiographical
and ego-documents documents in the Middle East. What Georges Gusdorf wrote in 1956, namely that autobiography has been proven to be a characteristic of Western societies and their focus on individuality, has been shown to be wrong by a number of studies. While the term autobiography has been object of numerous debates and critiques, the introduction of the term “ego-documents,” to refer to all kinds of “first-person narratives” and to “encompass all texts with an ego talking about himself,” has allowed to put some of these debates to rest. Memoirs, widely defined as non-fictional narratives based on the author’s memories, that do not necessarily span the entire life of the author but focus on specific moments, belong also to ego-documents. The focus in this chapter is not so much on the “self.” That would be impossible, because the memoirs were not written by a eunuch himself. However, looking at Hudā Shaʿrāwī’s memoirs can contribute to shedding light on how Egyptian nationalist elites understood slavery at the turn of the twentieth century
Locating Discourses on the Gender Binary (and Beyond) in Pre-modern Islamicate Societies
This chapter is an attempt to understand how the concepts of masculinity and femininity were understood in Islamicate societies in different genres in the pre-modern period and, moreover, to see whether the gender binary, constructed in terms of men/women; male/female, makes sense at all with reference to Islamicate pre-modern societies, or whether a binary man/non-man would be more appropriate. Moreover, the chapter tries to reconstruct what was understood as "sexual norm" in different kinds of sources. The chapter is divided into four sections: the first is devoted to lexicography; the second to medicine, the third to Islamic law and the fourth to belletristic
Shar3i, The Podcast. Episode 03.
Sitting in a virtual teahouse, Shar3i meets with scholars interested in Islamic law to discuss their research and teaching, but also their hobbies. The podcast is hosted by Serena Tolino (university of Bern) and Gianluca Parolin (Aga Khan University London). It begins with the scholars participating in the 10th Islamic Legal Studies conference, convened by the International Society of Islamic Legal Studies (ISILS) in partnership with the Governance Programme at the Aga Khan University - Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations (AKU-ISMC), held at the Aga Khan Centre in London, 19–21 May 2022.
In this episode, Gianluca Parolin and Serena Tolino meet Delfina Serrano-Ruano, PhD Tenured Researcher at the Spanish National Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), who also serves as board member of the International Society for Islamic Legal Studies (ISILS)
Eunuchs in the Fatimid Empire: Ambiguities, Gender and Sacredness
This chapter examines the roles that eunuchs had in the Fatimid empire, a shi'i dynasty that reigned in North Africa and Yemen between 297/909 and 567/1171. In this chapter it is argued that eunuchs were not understood as a 'third gender' but they were instead gendered according to the different contexts in which they acted or they were represented. To make this point clear, I look in the chapter at various kinds of courses: adab, chronicles, medical, legal and religious sources
Hacking meanings.
