    Exploiting Self-Absorption for Plasma Characterization in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Experiments: A Comparison of Two Recent Approaches

    In this article, we compare two analytical methods that have been recently proposed: the columnar density Saha-Boltzmann plot method of Cristoforetti and Tognoni (Cristoforetti, G.; Tognoni, E. Spectrochim. Acta, Part B, 2013, 79-80, 63-71) and the C-sigma model of Aragon and Aguilera (Aragon, C.; Aguilera, J. A. J. Quant. Spectrosc. Radiat. Trans. 2014, 149, 90-102). Both methods are based on the exploitation of self-absorbed lines for the characterization of plasmas in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy experiments. However, although the two methods can be safely applied in many cases, their usefulness is limited in many practical cases of interest because of the intrinsic constraints of the used plasma model or because of the complexity of the numerical treatment. The two methods are presented here and critically discussed. Finally, an extended C-sigma approach is proposed to merge the advantages of the two methods, overcoming their intrinsic limitations and simplifying the numerical treatment

    A number of empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of water and macronutrients in NFT-grown melons. The models were based on environmental factors, plant age (expressed as growing degree days), water absorption as well as the uptake rate of a 'reference' ion (nitrate or potassium) which could be routinely determined by means of ion-selective sensors. The models were generally conservative in the sense that predicted values were less extreme than the observed ones and the residuals were correlated with the observations. The rate of water uptake was the input variable which accounted for most of the variance in the observed macronutrient uptake; adding the uptake of 'reference' ion improved slightly the model fit only for nitrate and potassium

    Is there a Court for Gaza? : A test bench for International Justice

    The 'Goldstone Report' of September 2009 started a critical debate at the international level. The Report raised serious allegations of grave violations of international law with regard to the Israeli attack on Gaza of 27 December 2008 - 18 January 2009, amounting to possible war crimes and crimes against humanity. The UN General Assembly and the Human Rights Council, amidst high political pressure, endorsed the Report’s recommendations, calling for prompt and proper investigations to ensure accountability and justice for the victims. Given the lack of proper investigations at the national level, international justice mechanisms are now needed. Indeed, the ICC opened a preliminary examination of the situation but difficulties arose because of the uncertain status of the occupied Palestinian territory. The issue of the existence of a State of Palestine is extremely actual and still unsolved at the UN level

    BACKGROUND: The current 3rd edition of the Italian Society of Nephrology guidelines has been drawn up to summarize evidence of key intervention issues on the basis of systematic reviews (SR) of randomized trials (RCT) or RCT data only. In the present guideline, evidence of optimal haemoglobin (Hb) target levels in chronic kidney disease (CKD), either for pre-dialysis, dialysis or renal transplanted patients, is presented. METHODS: SR of RCT and RCT on different Hb target levels in patients with CKD were identified, referring to a Cochrane Library and Renal Health Library search (2005 update). Quality of SR and RCT was assessed according to current methodological standards. RESULTS: Four SR (19 RCT) were found addressing the point. Methodological quality of available trials was suboptimal. In CKD patients (non-dialysis patients) Hb targets of 11.3 g/dL should be preferred to Hb >13.5 g/dL (evidence from RCT). A Hb target of 11.0-11.5 g/dL should be preferred in CKD patients receiving dialysis treatment without significant cardiac disease, since no survival benefits has been showed with Hb >14 g/dL (evidence from RCT). The optimal Hb target in haemodialysis patients with severe cardiac disease should be 10.0-10.5 g/dL (evidence from SR). Increases in Hb target lev-els are associated with improved quality of life, although this was mainly noticed in observational studies and in few RCT often relying on unvalidated quality of life assessment scales. CONCLUSION: In CKD patients current available evidence supports the hypothesis that optimal Hb targets should be low to subnormal
