Hong Kong cinema 1982-2002 : the quest for identity during transition
Electronic redacted version excludes material for which permission has not been granted by the rights holderThis thesis seeks to interpret the cinematic representations of Hong Kongers’ identity quest during a transitional state/stage related to the sovereignty transfer. The Handover transition considered is an ideological one, rather than the overnight polity change on the Handover day. This research approaches contemporary Hong Kong cinema on two fronts and the thesis is structured accordingly: Upon an initial review of the existing Hong Kong film scholarship in the Introduction, and its 1997-related allegorical readings, Part I sees new angles (previously undeveloped or underdeveloped) for researching Hong Kong films made during 1982-2002. Arguments are built along the ideas of Hong Kongers’ situational, diasporic consciousness, and transformed ‘Chineseness’ because Hong Kong has lacked a cultural/national centrality. This part of research is informed by the ideas of Jacques Derrida, Homi Bhabha and Stuart Hall, and the diasporic experiences of Ien Ang, Rey Chow and Ackbar Abbas. With these new research angles and references to the circumstances, Part II reads critically the text of eight Hong Kong films made during the Handover transition. In chronological order, they are Boat People (Hui, 1982), Song of the Exile (Hui, 1990), Days of Being Wild (Wong, 1990), Happy Together (Wong, 1997), Made in Hong Kong (Chan, 1997), Ordinary Heroes (Hui, 1999), Durian Durian (Chan, 2000), and Hollywood Hong Kong (Chan, 2002). They meet several criteria related to the undeveloped / underdeveloped areas in the existing Hong Kong film scholarship. Hamid Naficy’s ‘accented cinema’ paradigm gives the guidelines to the film analysis in Part II. This part shows that Hong Kongers’ self-transformation during transition is alterable, indeterminate, and interminable, due to the people’s situational, diasporic consciousness, and transformed ‘Chineseness’. This thesis thus contributes to Hong Kong cinema scholarship in interpreting films with new research angles, and generating new insights into this cinematic tradition and its wider context

Web-based adaptive testing system for C programming
With the ever increasing amount of workload that students have during their college, students requires more and more time to recap, revise and reinforce their knowledge of each subject. However, the current self-practice and self-assessment approaches seldom cater to a student’s learning capability or ability. To cope with this problem, Computerised Adaptive Testing (CAT) and Test Paper Generation (TPG) techniques have been used to eliminate some of these restrictions.
In this project, the author focuses into two approaches to improve these two techniques. Currently, these two approaches do not allow a teacher to make detailed requirements for CAT based tests as well as test papers generated by TPG. The modifications proposed attempts to enable these two techniques to be more practical to the student as well as the teachers. Performance evaluation of these two proposed modifications was also completed and shown to be effective.
Additionally, a complete web-based adaptive testing system using CAT and TPG techniques as well as the two proposed modifications was developed for the domain of C Programming Language. With the completion of the system, it was deployed for current students taking a related course to evaluate. The user evaluation has shown that the system was very useful to the students who are currently attending the course. The results have also been included in this report.
The author hopes that through the use of the web-based adaptive testing system and its related techniques, more students will be able to improve upon with their studies by effectively reinforcing their knowledge of each subject through practices and test of questions that are in line with their ability.Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science
The significance of en-bloc sales in influencing private property prices in Singapore
Using data from 1996 to 2019, we establish a relationship between en-bloc sales and the private resale markets, comprising both the aggregate/overall effect and the localised effect using 2 different models. From our analysis using the Finite Distributed Lag Model (FDLM), en-bloc sales have a positive effect on the private property resale market in the aggregate sense. Analysis using the hedonic pricing model shows that en-bloc sale announcements have a positive effect on the resale prices of properties in the surrounding area, with this effect growing stronger with each successive announcement. Further analysis of sale launch dates and completion of redevelopment dates reveal that surrounding resale prices fall on such announcements. We also found deflationary spillover effects from the en-bloc sales into the public resale market.Bachelor of Arts in Economic

It is generally agreed that Non-Governmental Social Service Organizations (NGSSOs) play specific roles as part of the third sector in the process of social welfare service provision. However, due to the globalized and structural nature of the emerging social problems, as well as the local challenges, NGSSOs are experiencing difficulties in reaching their goals and performing their missions. To manage well the institutional rules and the interdependent relation with the environment may lead to effective organizational survival and development. Management staff as well as frontline social workers are two major parties who may have significant responses upon these challenges and difficulties. How these two groups perceive the current situation, how management staff decide to adopt whichever kind of organizational strategies; whereas how frontline social workers respond to these organization policies are areas worth for study. In this study, organization leaders and frontline social workers were selected as the study target. A total of 17 management staff and 11 frontline social workers were interviewed. It is revealed that NGSSO management staff concern most with the financial stability and viability of their organizations. Under such an orientation, organizational strategies adopted by these leaders relate largely to compromising to institutional rules, expanding services and resources, and increasing organizational credibility among funders and service users. These organization-wide behaviors have turned out to have negative effects on job satisfaction and work atmosphere among frontline social workers. Comparing to their supervisor counterpart, they concern more about their professional identity and subjective well being.Apart from gaining institutional legitimacy and environment resources, it is recommended that NGSSOs may put extra effort in promoting shared mission and organizational goals among their frontline staff. It was also found that representing civil society and doing advocacy work do not take high priority among NGSSO informants. It is suggested that NGSSOs focus more on this area and readjust the balance of being a service provider and an active member of civil society.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Detailed summary in vernacular field only.Au, Kit Ying Anita = 香港非政府社會服務機構的機構生存與發展策略 / 區潔盈.Thesis (Ph.D.) Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 313-348).Abstracts also in Chinese; appendixes includes Chinese.Au, Kit Ying Anita = Xianggang fei zheng fu she hui fu wu ji gou de ji gou sheng cun yu fa zhan ce lüe / Qu Jieying
Organellar genome copy number variations and integrity across different organs, growth stages, phenotypes and main localities of sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottboll) in Sarawak, Malaysia
The sago palm (Metroxylon sagu Rottboll) is one valuable food crop that has both high economic and nature value with promising potential to curb future global hunger issues. The organellar genomes, namely mitogenome and plastome, are indispensable in various development processes of plants, orchestrating the survivability and adaptability of the host and fulfilling its physiological needs. The long-PCR and qPCR approaches were used in couple to reveal the organellar genome copy number variations across different organs, growth stages, phenotypes and main localities in Sarawak, Malaysia. In this study, the mature leaf achieved among the highest unimpeded plastome and mitogenome copy number among other organs such as young root, mature root, young shoot, aged leaf and pneumatophore. The Plawei Manit stage scored the highest in terms of unimpeded mitogenome and plastome copy number across other four growth stages. The non-trunking and spiny phenotypes inspected have lower organellar genome copy numbers than the trunking phenotype. All three phenotypes sampled from four different localities in Sarawak, Malaysia showed no significant difference. This study serves as a steppingstone in unravelling the organellar genome copy number variations of sago palm and this knowledge is essential for future genotyping studies
Tino rangatiratanga in health policies and practises
The purpose of my doctoral research was to investigate tino rangatiratanga in health policies and practises in Aotearoa. My research involved defining tino rangatiratanga and exploring the expression of tino rangatiratanga in health policy and practises. A kaupapa Māori analysis of the 1996 National Cervical Screening Programme’s Policy document was at the core of the policy investigation. The analysis involved developing a kaupapa Māori analysing framework and then analysing the 1996 National Cervical Screening Policy document for empirical and normative judgements at four discursive levels, health gains, health objectives, health goals and fundamental underlying values. A Kaupapa Māori research design drew on interdisciplinary scholarship on colonisation, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, community psychology, public policy, disability theory, feminist theory and discourse theory.
I argue that the dominance of Western cultural norms and state-directed policies were made possible by the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The signing of Te Tiriti saw Crown sovereignty being implemented and tino rangatiratanga ignored. The consequences for Māori have been disastrous with loss of land and economic base which has resulted in poor health status. I also argue that tino rangatiratanga has the potential to transform the social and political context that frame Aotearoa society. Such an approach raises a critical dilemma for the state as meaningful recognition of tino rangatiratanga requires waiving full and absolute sovereignty which currently resides in the state. Hence some scholars argue that tino rangatiratanga is a site for constructive engagement where state and Māori relationships can be renegotiated. The extent to which this potential for constructive engagement is being realised in however is inadequately explored in the scholarly literature. Exploring the relationships between tino rangatiratanga and health policies and practises as undertaken in my thesis will therefore contribute to scholarly knowledge on the subject.
The findings from the research show that tino rangatiratanga is indeed a complex, fluid, multi-faceted and context related concept. Within the context of my research, tino rangatiratanga is defined as Māori sovereignty, self determination, and positive Māori development. As a Māori value it is about mana and tapu of rangatira or leadership personified. Within policies, tino rangatiratanga has emerged through resistance and demonstration and is actualised through Tiriti legislation and policies.
The legitimation of tino rangatiratanga in cervical screening services sees Māori leadership at national, regional and local levels and Māori involvement through wide ranging consultation but the Crown still controls the policy process and therefore the outcomes. Most cervical screening services are still owned and operated by the Crown or Crown agencies.
One of the consequences of Crown control is that Māori women are still twice as likely to get cervical cancer and four times more likely to die from it. To some degree this may be the result of resource allocation and the result of discriminatory service practices but also the result of resistance to the procedure itself.
Tino rangatiratanga within cervical screening services could be strengthened through iwi ownership of some cervical screening register sites. At the time of my field work (2000) there were 14 sites, all owned and operated by Crown agents. Tino rangatiratanga could also be strengthened through funding criteria that ensure practitioners are safe to practise, through the adoption of less invasive procedures and through the legitimation of Māori healing practises such as rongoā and karakia.
Overall if tino rangatiratanga is to be given full effect within the policy domain Māori must have a well established asset base, they must be in control of the decision making making process including resource allocation, service delivery must address the diversities of Māori realities and Māori must be the recipients of policy decisions made
Comparison of embedded and added motor imagery training in patients after stroke: Study protocol of a randomised controlled pilot trial using a mixed methods approach

This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Background: Two different approaches have been adopted when applying motor imagery (MI) to stroke patients. MI can be conducted either added to conventional physiotherapy or integrated within therapy sessions. The proposed study aims to compare the efficacy of embedded MI to an added MI intervention. Evidence from pilot studies reported in the literature suggests that both approaches can improve performance of a complex motor skill involving whole body movements, however, it remains to be demonstrated, which is the more effective one.Methods/Design: A single blinded, randomised controlled trial (RCT) with a pre-post intervention design will be carried out. The study design includes two experimental groups and a control group (CG). Both experimental groups (EG1, EG2) will receive physical practice of a clinical relevant motor task ('Going down, laying on the floor, and getting up again') over a two week intervention period: EG1 with embedded MI training, EG2 with MI training added after physiotherapy. The CG will receive standard physiotherapy intervention and an additional control intervention not related to MI.The primary study outcome is the time difference to perform the task from pre to post-intervention. Secondary outcomes include level of help needed, stages of motor task completion, degree of motor impairment, balance ability, fear of falling measure, motivation score, and motor imagery ability score. Four data collection points are proposed: twice during baseline phase, once following the intervention period, and once after a two week follow up. A nested qualitative part should add an important insight into patients' experience and attitudes towards MI. Semi-structured interviews of six to ten patients, who participate in the RCT, will be conducted to investigate patients' previous experience with MI and their expectations towards the MI intervention in the study. Patients will be interviewed prior and after the intervention period.Discussion: Results will determine whether embedded MI is superior to added MI. Findings of the semi-structured interviews will help to integrate patient's expectations of MI interventions in the design of research studies to improve practical applicability using MI as an adjunct therapy technique
The voice of Hong Kong: Sam Hui, Cantopop, and working class identity in 1970s-1980s Hong Kong
M.Phil.Sam Hui Koon-kit, the legendary Hong Kong singer, songwriter and actor, is considered one of the major figures in leading locally-produced popular music in Hong Kong to a flourishing period, and in establishing many of the musical, lyrical, and stylistic conventions of what would become popularly known as “Cantopop.” In this thesis, I analyze Hui’s music as a reflection of and actor in the formation of Hong Kong cultural identity. Building on scholarship on popular music and identity as well as perspectives from Hong Kong studies, I discuss the construction of pop taste and Hui’s style of Cantopop in relation to the sociopolitical situation in 1970s Hong Kong, and I examine the cultural reinterpretation processes in his cover songs, which I argue demonstrate both hybridization as well as the cultural specificity of Hong Kong. Finally, I attend to the ways Hui’s work articulated a particular understanding of working class identity in Hong Kong. I explore these issues through an analysis of the music, lyrics, singing style, and performance style of selected works by Hui, and relate my analyses to relevant historical and cultural contexts in Hong Kong. I supplement this approach with reception analysis and attention to the situated ways in which the music was understood and consumed by listeners, in order to reflect on how individuals heard, consumed, and made sense of Hui’s songs in relation to their own experiences of self, culture, and identity during a transformative period in Hong Kong. Chan, Yuen Woon.Thesis M.Phil.
