Scientific method and creative process for wearable technologies from invention to innovation
Full text linkThe aim of this paper is demonstrating how in the contemporary scene the boundaries between scientific method and creative process are increasingly blurred finding innovation as the point of intersection of this discursive separation. The analysis identifies the object of investigation in the emergent field of fashion wearables. In fact, the introduction of digital tools has had a significant impact on the fashion system, and wearable technologies represent the result of a new systemic interaction among diverse approaches belonging to different sectors. In this context, our purpose is to identify the moment when invention, seen as technological progress, becomes innovation, integrating and affecting people’s lives. To this end, the paper is firstly aimed in analyzing through case studies the different methods to design innovative fashion products. Both technology driven innovation and design driven innovation based methodologies are examined. The two strategies are compared and described in terms of phases, actors involved and validation of the obtained results, underlining the crucial stages of the process: the definition of the target and the scenario and the phase of product testing. This involves both traditional methods of data analysis for the technological functioning, based on numerically quantifiable parameters, and experimental verification based on the object-final user relationship. This test aims at “measuring” the effectiveness of the products in terms of comfort, usability, aesthetics and interaction. It is this methodological transdisciplinary practice that carries appreciable results concerning innovation. This approach leads to an emphasis of the designer’s cross role and it represents an opportunity for the academic research as well as for the market

No full textLAUREA MAGISTRALEAi giorni d’oggi, i dispositivi indossabili stanno assolvendo una funzione importante all’interno del sistema sanitario. La produzione di massa di questi dispositivi, portano ad un’ampia varietà di scelta per i consumatori, ma ad ogni modo, questi sviluppi si concentrano molto di più sull’aspetto tecnologico che su quello estetico. Il tassello mancante nei centri di vendita per tali dispositivi è proprio l’aspetto estetico. Il quale viene ignorato completamente dalle compagnie di produzione. I dispositivi indossabili in quanto accessori in contatto con il corpo possono essere modellati come gioielli smart, se la loro estetica raggiunge un livello accettabile. Per svilup-pare queste tipologie di prodotti, è necessario lo studio di nuove tecnologie e valoriz-zarle anche dal punto di vista artistico. Se osserviamo una panoramica dei gioielli pro-dotto in passato e ai giorni nostri, è possibile studiare la funzionalità di tali beni. Le funzionalità di questi prodotti si stanno evolvendo e cambiando giorno dopo giorno, e adesso è il momento giusto per dare inizio alla tecnologia avanzata focalizzata sulla realizzazione dei gioielli smart e sviluppare una nuova generazione di gioielli.
JEST come gioiello smart sulla pelle, rappresenta il futuro per i dispositivi che si possono indossare, dotati di una tecnologia avanzata il quale viene abbinata ad un design che rispetta determinati canoni estetici. JEST rappresenta un gioiello bidimen-sionale con le sembianze di un tatuaggio dotato di un display traspirante, durevole e flessibile il quale è fissato sulla pelle. Tali gioielli ti permettono anche di poter control-lare il proprio smartphone e allo stesso tempo comunicare con l'osservatore. La fon-dazione di questa tipologia di gioielli, è basata su due differenti tecnologie: DuoSkin dal MIT Media Lab e la e-Skin display, dall’università di Tokyo. Il motto del JEST è ‘ wear Jewellery, be smart, enjoy Tattoo’ ovvero ’ Indossa gioielli, sii elegante, e goditi il tatuaggio’Nowadays, wearable devices are playing a necessary role in the healthcare system. The mass production of wearable devices brings a variety of options for the customers to choose their preference, however, this development focuses more on the technology than aesthetics. which is being ignored by the companies. Wearable devices as accessories in touch with the body can be shaped as smart jewellery if their aesthetic reaches an acceptable level. To develop smart jewellery, it is necessary to study the new technologies and expand them to art. With an overview of the past and present jewels, it is possible to study the functionality of jewels. These jewels' functions are changing over time
and now is the period to enter smart technologies into the jewellery world and develop a new generation of jewels.
JEST, as a smart on-skin jewellery, is the future of wearable devices with advanced technology which is merged into an emotional design. JEST is a 2D jewellery in the shape of a tattoo with a breathable, flexible, and durable display which is attached to the skin and acts as a smart second skin. This smart jewellery covers the need of having a wearable device to control the smartphone and at the same time communicate with the observer. Mentre i costumi arricchiscono la produzione complessiva, i gioielli emergono frequentemente come simboli cruciali, racchiudendo temi di desiderio, potere e identità che approfondiscono lo sviluppo dei personaggi e la complessità narrativa.
Attraverso un'analisi storica del ruolo dei gioielli nel teatro operistico, questa ricerca ne rivela i ruoli tradizionali: catturare l'attenzione, rappresentare lo status di un personaggio e contribuire allo sviluppo della narrazione. Tuttavia, l'introduzione delle tecnologie digitali nel XXI secolo ha trasformato il panorama operistico, stimolando nuove interpretazioni dei gioielli che riflettono i valori e le estetiche della società contemporanea. Basandosi su testimonianze di esperti e casi studio, questa tesi evidenzia la tendenza al minimalismo nell’uso dei gioielli, suggerendo che un'applicazione strategica possa intensificare l'impatto emotivo e rafforzare il focus narrativo. L’analisi mostra come i gioielli possano incarnare profondità tematica e facilitare le interazioni tra i personaggi, bilanciando tradizione e innovazione nella progettazione operistica.
Con i progressi come la realtà aumentata, la realtà virtuale e le tecniche di messa in scena innovative, il significato dei gioielli si è espanso oltre il semplice ornamento. Man mano che le produzioni operistiche interagiscono sempre più con interfacce digitali e narrazioni sperimentali, i gioielli rimangono un elemento centrale che arricchisce l'esperienza teatrale, invitando il pubblico a un coinvolgimento emotivo e intellettuale più profondo con l'arte operistica.Originating as a synthesis of various art forms, opera has historically served as a potent medium for cultural expression, utilizing a powerful blend of music, drama, and visual artistry. While costumes enhance the overall production, jewelry frequently emerges as a pivotal symbol, encapsulating themes of desire, power, and identity that deepen character development and narrative complexity.
Through a historical analysis of jewelry's role in operatic theater, this research reveals its traditional roles: capturing attention, signifying character's status, and moving on the narrative. However, the introduction of digital technologies in the 21st century has transformed the operatic landscape, prompting new interpretations of jewelry that reflect contemporary societal values and aesthetics. Drawing on expert testimonies and case studies, this thesis highlights the trend toward minimalism in jewelry usage, suggesting that its strategic application can intensify emotional impact and enhance narrative focus. The analysis illustrates how jewelry can embody thematic depth and facilitate character interactions while navigating the tension between tradition and innovation in operatic design.
With advancements such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and innovative staging techniques, jewelry's significance has expanded beyond mere adornment. As operatic productions increasingly engage with digital interfaces and experimental storytelling, jewelry remains a central element that enriches the theatrical experience, inviting audiences into deeper emotional and intellectual engagement with the art form
