Maritime technology attention trends: Buzzwords, stability, and emerging patterns

    No full text
This paper presents a systematic literature review (SLR) to differentiate between transient buzzwords and sustained technological trends in maritime technology by analyzing attention patterns over time. Using temporal data from academic publications, industry news, and EU-funded projects, we identify key trends shaping the sector's technological discourse. Our findings indicate that alternative fuels, green propulsion, decarbonization, electrification, and automation receive sustained attention across research, policy, and industry, highlighting their long-term relevance. Artificial intelligence (AI) and smart ports demonstrate stable momentum, though policy engagement lags behind industry adoption. Green ports exhibit steady growth, reflecting challenges in infrastructure modernization. Automated identification system (AIS) Automated identification system (AIS)1 remains widely discussed as an established technology rather than an emerging trend. In contrast, blockchain and internet of things (IoT) follow hype cycles, experiencing sharp attention spikes before declining. Big data and cloud computing, while still in use, have transitioned from broad discussions to specialized applications, reducing their prominence in wider discourse. Digital twins sustain research interest but face slow industry uptake, while Port Community Systems (PCS) and synchromodality display inconsistent attention patterns, suggesting early-stage development. This analysis provides insights into how maritime technologies gain and sustain attention over time, helping researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders distinguish between fleeting hype and transformative trends in maritime innovation

Italian Motorways of the Sea: When Great Expectations turn to Lost Occasions

    No full text
Starting with a review of the current organisation of the Italian system of the Motorways of the Sea (MoS), the major aim of the paper is to describe several political tools and discuss how they can stimulate the usage of the Short Sea Shipping (SSS). It is a matter of fact that the increase of the road congestion could affect the economic growth of Europe as well as worsen the environment. One of the most important means to reduce the environmental impact of the road transport is the increasing of the SSS as a substitute of the road transport for the medium distance trade. After almost a decade since the introduction of the Motorway of the Sea in Europe, several problems have affected the development of this modal solution. The major undermining criticalities against the development of the MoS are the reluctance of the truckers to use a different modal solution from the road transport and the absence of a real Short Sea Network that can provide alternative routes to the road ones. After a description of the European situation and of the general problems which could slow down the development of the SSS, the paper investigates how different tools could have an impact on the current situation through a case study of the Italian MoS organisation. Before this research no study were made to draw the current Italian MoS network focusing on domestic services and trying to connect the current road transport with the potential demand for maritime (Ro‐Ro) services. The implications related with different policies and reforms on the current MoS system are discussed, calculating the effects on the current organisation and on the forecast demand distribution. To analyse different situations and the impact of different policies, this paper used direct information collected from interviews, specific database; while for the elaboration, specific software and different statistic tools are applied to generalize the conclusions on the current EU SSS system. The paper is structured as follow: Section 1 gives a short description of the major aims of the Motorways of the Sea following the European wills, while Section 2 describes the current organisation in Italy. Section 3 underlines the problems in Italy and it compares the current Italian situation with the one of Europe. Section 4 is focused on possible solutions to improve the usage of the Motorways of the Sea, while Section 5 is dedicated to conclusion and suggestions for further studies

Emission savings through a re-scheduling of maritime services: possible implications for the Mediterranean ports

    No full text
The major aim of the paper is to analyse how growing awareness of environmental impact determined by trade activities can influence maritime transport and how it can facilitate changes in the current structure of maritime routes. In particular, the study compares the emissions concerning two alternatives in current maritime routes to highlight how possible incentives for emission reduction applied to maritime transport could impact the route choice. The analysis focuses on the trade routes from the Far East and South America towards Europe and it compares the emissions in two alternative scenarios: direct services calling at a North European port and shipping services calling at a Mediterranean port. In the latter scenario a significant role could be played by the North-African ports, whose development represents possible transhipment calls for the international shipping trades, mainly on the Europe-Far East route. In this sense they may act as competitors of the North European ports: their favourable geographic position allows for a considerable reduction in nautical distances with an immediate impact on the maritime transport emissions. To analyse the differences of emission impacts, this paper uses some particular statistical tools based on scientific literature and some instruments related to previous analysis in similar fields. The data used in the paper have been collected directly from shipping operators, terminal operators and some specialist databases. The paper is structured in 5 sections. After a brief introduction about transport and the environment (Section 1), Section 2 provides a review of some general methods to calculate the environmental cost of maritime transport, while Section 3 analyses the current trade route system and which ports can have an influence on changing the maritime patterns. Section 4 is focused on the analysis and comparison of the maritime routes alternatives, while Section 5 draws some conclusions and remarks for further analysis

    No full text

\ua9 2017 Elsevier Ltd. In the recent past, several governments tried to promote infrastructure investments using different policies and funding schemes. Strategies have been differentiated over time, among regions, and in relation to specific political choices. The paper focuses on Latin America and the Caribbean in which different political approaches have been developed together with a quite different geographical level of characterisation, representing a significant case study to better understand how political and institutional intervention might incentivise local and/or foreign investors, shaping the organisation of the infrastructure network. Therefore, the current research analyses the transport-related projects included in the World Bank database on private participation in infrastructure (from 1980 to 2015) highlighting main patterns in terms of institutional, social and economic characteristics that might influence the investment in transport infrastructure in the Latin America and the Caribbean. Our panel analysis - that includes data collected from the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and local government websites - shows a clear link between government strategies and the related outcome in terms of transport investments. In particular, in addition to the size of the investment, a positive (and significant) impact of being part of a regional organisation emerges, as well as the involvement of private companies
