Le Porte d'Architettura Rustica di Orazio Perucci
The collection Porte d’architettura rustica was published posthumously in 1634, perhaps in Bologna, but it was conceived presumably
in the early XVII century. It is a work known to historians, but not yet properly studied, nor is studied its author, Orazio Perucci from Reggio (1549-1624), a painter versed in architecture,
but whose design activity is not testified by any evidence or documented works.
Conceived as a series of portals designed for civil architecture (palaces and gardens) and as a casuistry of “extravagant” models, the collection follows the example of the fortunate book
Libro Extraordinario, although without the same success and editorial circulation.
Many refined inventions by Perucci refer to suggestions from Sebastiano Serlio, but also to the models of portals by Vignola and Michelangelo, which appeared in the early seventeenth-century
editions of the Regola, and to experimentations by Tibald
Almeno fino agli anni Sessanta del secolo continuerà a costruire fabbriche in pietra a vista caratterizzate da un'asciutta essenzialità e secondo modi di un "eclettismo consapevole".Alcamo (Trapani) has been one of the places, where Classicist resistance and Gothic survival have protracted, going beyond the 16th century with the experience of creators from external provenience and traditional education, but open to a wide range of possibilities, ready to indifferently use the two languages. It is not an exception, actually in the 16th century we have similar phenomena in many Sicilian suburbs.
Alcamo represents the ideal example, where both styles live side by side and define a season. In Alcamo mysterious master Lisasce (Li Saxi) works in prestigious buildings and master-architect Girolamo Vicchiuzzo, from great Palermo factories of the first years of XVIth century, gains success. Author of some unique traditional buildings in Palermo ( such as Church S. Maria dei Miracoli, 1548; Church S. Nicolò di Bari, 1558; Church S. Oliva, 1560) where Gothic and Classicism live side by side, his personality seems to dominate the local construction site's life
Urinary benzene and t,t-muconic acid as biomarkers of low level occupational exposure to benzene
Urinary benzene and t,t-muconic acid excretion as biomarkers of low level occupational exposure to benzene
Urinary benzene and trans,trans-muconic acid excretion as biomakers of low level occupational exposure to benzene
Misurament of urinary trans, trans muconic acid excretion is considered a reliable biomarker of occupational exposure to benzene. However at low level occupational and environmental exposure, an increased dietary intake of sorbic acid, a common anti-oxidant,can greatly reduce its specificity.Direct monitoring of urinary benzene requires technical prcautions and numerous non occipational sources of exposure might make it difficult using it as an indicator of low level occupational exposure.Within the Italian multicentre project on the " Effect of genetic polymorphisms and non occupational exposures on the inter-individual variability of biomarkers of exposure to benzene and PAH" cordinated nation-wide by the Clinica Devoto" of the University of Milan, we measured pre-shift and end-shift urinary excretion of benzene and t,t-MA in 33 oil refinery workers and 35 military fuel attendants of the Italian Air Forc
Adjuvant intravesical therapy in intermediate risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) recurring after first cycle of intravesical treatment.
Introduction and objectives
The therapeutic management of intermediate risk NMI-BC recurring after intravesical therapy (IT) is not established. Cystectomy will be offered to patients at higher risk of progression but the majority will be retreated by IT. Although some Authors suggest BCG when intravesical chemotherapy (ICH) fails, some patients are retreated by ICH and some others repeat BCG adopted as first-line treatment. Not many studies have been published on this issue. The response to retreatment by intravesical therapy in terms of recurrence-free rate (RFR) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) is analyzed in 179 intermediate-risk patients.
Materials and methods
Only intermediate-risk tumours (EORTC Risk Tables recurrence-risk score 5-9) in absence of TIS were selected. The patients not receiving at least 6 instillations of BCG or ICH after the first diagnosis and again after the TUR of the first recurrence, were excluded. Only BCG, mitomycin c and epirubicin were accepted. All patients were submitted to cytology and cystoscopy 3-monthly for the first 2-years and then 6-monthly. A statistical analysis was performed for RFR and RFS and progression, considering first line IT (BCG versus ICH), previous recurrence free interval, T-category, G-grade, multiplicity, second line IT (BCG versus ICH) and maintenance regimen.
Results
The study included 179 patients. The first-line IT was ICH in 131 (73.2%) and BCG in 48 (26.8%) patients. The median recurrence free interval was 16 months. Intravesical therapy at recurrence was BCG in 83 (46.4%) and ICH in 96 (53.6%) patients. Maintenance of at least 12 months was given in 31.3% and 38.5% of patients respectively. Of the 48 patients previously treated by BCG, 40 (83.3%) repeated it, while of the 131 previously treated by ICH, 88 (67.2%) received ICH again and 43 (32.8%) BCG. Thus, only 8 patients received ICH after BCG. At a median follow-up of 29 months, 65 (36.3%) patients recurred, 25 (30.1%) and 40 (41.7%) after BCG and ICH respectively. No statistical difference emerged in terms of RFS between BCG and ICH (p=0.97). Thirteen patients showed progression at a median interval of 19 months. At multivariate analysis no statistically significant correlation was detected among the considered parameters. Surprisingly, no statistical difference emerged in terms of recurrence free interval between first and second line IT (16 versus 15 months, Mann Whitney U-Test p=0.38), and between patients receiving BCG or ICH as second line therapy after ICH (=0.28).
Conclusions
Intravesical re-treatment by chemotherapy or BCG did not show any reduction in terms of RFS when compared with the first line therapy. Moreover, in patients recurring after intravesical chemotherapy, chemotherapy and BCG resulted equally effective in terms of RFR and RFS
Potential impact of a nonavalent HPV vaccine on HPV related low-and high-grade cervical intraepithelial lesions: A referral hospital-based study in Sicily
While bivalent and quadrivalent HPV vaccines have been used for about 10 years, a nonavalent vaccine against HPV types 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52 and 58 has been recently approved by FDA and EMA and is now commercially available. The objective of our study was to evaluate the potential impact of the nonavalent vaccine on HPV infection and related low- and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL, HSIL), compared to the impact of the quadrivalent vaccine, in a female population living in Sicily (Italy). Low estimates of HPV vaccine impact were calculated as prevalence of HPV 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52 and 58 genotypes, alone or in association, but excluding presence of other HPV types; high estimates were calculated as prevalence of HPV 6/11/16/18/31/33/45/52 and 58 genotypes alone or in association, in the presence of other HPV types. The nonavalent HPV vaccine showed increased impact, compared to the quadrivalent vaccine. Estimates of potential impact varied from 30.9% (low estimate) to 53.3% (high estimate) for LSIL, and from 56.9% to 81,0% for HSIL. The proportion of additional cases potentially prevented by the nonavalent vaccine was 14.4%–23.8% for LSIL, and 19.0%–32.8% for HSIL. The benefit of the nonavalent vaccine compared to the quadrivalent vaccine was more than 80% for both low and high impact estimates for LSIL and more than 50% for both low and high impact estimates for HSIL. The present study confirms that the switch from a first generation HPV vaccines to a nonavalent vaccine would increase the prevention of cervical HSIL in up to 90% of cases
