A new charging scheme for ATM based on QoS

    No full text
PhDNew services are emerging rapidly within the world of telecommunications. Charging strategies that were appropriate for individual transfer capabilities are no longer appropriate for an integrated broadband communications network. There is currently a range of technologies (such as cable television, telephony and narrow band ISDN) for the different services in use and a limited number of charging schemes are applicable for each of the underlying technologies irrespective of the services used over it. Difficulties arise when a wide range of services has to be supported on the same integrated technology such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM); in such cases the type of service in use and the impact it has on the network becomes much more important. The subject of this thesis, therefore, is the charging strategies for integrated broadband communications networks. That is, the identification of the requirements associated with ATM charging schemes and the proposal of a new approach to charging for ATM called the “quality of service based charging scheme”. Charging for ATM is influenced by three important components: the type and content of a service being offered; the type of customer using the services; and the traffic characteristics belonging to the application supporting the services. The first two issues will largely be dependent on the business and regulatory requirements of the operators. The last item, and an essential one for ATM, is the bridge between technology and business; how are the resources used by a service quantified? Charging that is based on resource usage at the network level was the prime focus of the research reported here. With the proposed charging scheme, a distinction is first made between the four different ATM transfer capabilities that will support various services and the different quality of service requirements that may be applicable to each of them. Then, resources are distributed among buffers set-up to support the combination of these transfer capabilities and quality of services. The buffers are dimensioned according to the M/D/1/K and the ND/D/1 queuing analysis to determine the buffer efficiency and quality of service requirements. This dimensioning provides the basis for fixing the price per unit of resource and time. The actual resource used by a connection is based on the volume of cells transmitted or peak cell rate allocation in combination with traffic shapers if appropriate. Shapers are also dimensioned using the quality of service parameters. Since the buffer 4 efficiency is dependent on the quality of service requirements, users (customers) of ATM networks buy quality of service. The actual price of a connection is further subjected to a number of transformations based on the size of the resource purchased, the time of the day at which a connection is made, and the geographical locality of the destination switch. It is demonstrated that the proposed charging scheme meets all the requirements of customers and of network operators. In addition the result of the comparison of the new scheme with a number of existing, prominent, ATM charging schemes is presented, showing that the performance of the proposed scheme is better in terms of meeting the expectations of both the customers and the network operators

The Groomers and the Question of Race

    No full text
The last decade has witnessed a number of prominent police-led operations relating to child sexual exploitation (CSE) in England. Whilst much of the public discourse related to Operation Yewtree, Operation Fernbridge, and others has focused on the criminal nature of CSE, race has been absent from that discourse; conversely, the public debates relating to grooming cases by men of Pakistani heritage have been marked by the presence of race. By critically evaluating the above cases this article aims to put forward three related arguments. First, it aims to highlight and explain contrasting ways in which CSE is debated vis-á-vis the category of racialised politics. Second, it demonstrates how racialised discourse of CSE, initially considered to be a feature of far-right rhetoric, has taken centre ground. Finally, drawing upon analysis of various reports it aims to question the links between race and CSE to show how racialised discourse of CSE helps undermine its victims

ADEPT: Managing Business Processes Using Intelligent Agents

    No full text
This paper describes work undertaken in the ADEPT (Advanced Decision Environment for Process Tasks) project towards developing an agent-based infrastructure for managing business processes. We describe how the key technology of negotiating, service providing, autonomous agents was realised and demonstrate how this was applied to the BT business process of providing a customer quote for network services. Issues of agent visualisation are also addressed

Correlation of protoporphyrin metabolism in cell proliferation with embryonic development time: A spectroscopic investigation

    No full text
The cell proliferation process in chick embryos was monitored using fluorometry. The 410 nm-excited emission spectra of albumin from controlled and incubated eggs were measured. A strong emission near 622 nm was observed, which is the characteristic emission of protoporphyrin IX (PPIX). It was found that the metabolic level of PPIX for the initial phase increases linearly with the embryonic development time (t) as MPPIXl(t)=MPPIX0+at, where a is a factor proportional to the rate of PPIX accumulation and MPPIX0 is the initial value of MPPIXl(t), suggesting a possible method for estimating the stages of the organ development.Griffith Sciences, School of Natural SciencesNo Full Tex

Indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-expressing aortic plasmacytoid dendritic cells protect against atherosclerosis by induction of regulatory T cells

    No full text
Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are unique bone-marrow-derived cells that produce large amounts of type I interferon in response to microbial stimulation. Furthermore, pDCs also promote T cell tolerance in sterile-inflammation conditions. However, the immunomodulatory role of aortic pDCs in atherosclerosis has been poorly understood. Here, we identified functional mouse and human pDCs in the aortic intima and showed that selective, inducible pDC depletion in mice exacerbates atherosclerosis. Aortic pDCs expressed CCR9 and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase 1 (IDO-1), an enzyme involved in driving the generation of regulatory T cells (Tregs). As a consequence, loss of pDCs resulted in decreased numbers of Tregs and reduced IL-10 levels in the aorta. Moreover, antigen presentation by pDCs expanded antigen-specific Tregs in the atherosclerotic aorta. Notably, Tregs ablation affected pDC homeostasis in diseased aorta. Accordingly, pDCs in human atherosclerotic aortas colocalized with Tregs. Collectively, we identified a mechanism of atheroprotection mediated by tolerogenic aortic pDCs.open

Design of an experimental model for a semi-active vibration damping system on a jack-up platform

    No full text
Jack-up platforms are off-shore structure which are more often placed in deeper water and harsher weather conditions. The consequence is that the natural frequency of the platform coincides with the wave frequency and starts to resonate in its natural frequency. The problem becomes more complicated, due to the fact that the natural frequency of the platform is not constant and varies in time due to structural properties, variable deck loading and environmental conditions. These vibrations are undesired and have to be damped. The aim of this thesis is to design an experimental model for a damping system on a jack up platform, which can optimally damp the motion of the primary structure when it is excited in the time varying natural frequency. This problem is tackled by comparing passive, semi-active and active Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) systems, regarding feasibility and robustness for installation on a jack-up platform. Hereafter the optimal tuning frequency and damping ratio are obtained by studying the work of Tsai and Lin, Connor and Den Hartog. These tuning laws are then combined with a Self-Tuning Regulator (STR), which makes it possible to continuously tune the semi-active damping system to its optimal parameters by estimating the unknown structural parameter using a Recursive Least Square Estimator. The designed experimental model is a two degree of freedom model and incorporates crucial characteristics such as mass distribution, damping ratio and natural frequency. The semi-active TMD system is able to adapt its stiffness and damping coefficient, such that is it always optimally tuned when the structural parameters of the experimental model changes. This thesis concludes that a semi-active TMD system is the most appropriate type of damping system for a jack-up platform, regarding feasibility and robustness. A semi-active TMD system in combination with optimal tuning laws and a STR is able to optimally damp the vibrations of a jack-up platform, when it is excited in time varying natural frequency. This model can be used to test and validate the performance of the damping system and controller.Control EngineeringDelft Center for Systems and ControlMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin
