Introduction
In this contribution, by way of introduction I first say a few words about the Declaration Gravissimum Educationis and catholic education in Belgium. Afterwards I present some figures illustrating the changed context in which catholic education finds itself today, and I analyze this context as post-Christian and post-secular, suggesting that we no longer use an analysis in terms of secularisation but one of pluralization. Further I reflect on the consequences of this changed context and analysis for identity construction today and the challenges for Christian faith, and the way in which the Church and catholic education have dealt with this. Before finally presenting a new way of profiling catholic education as a project of identity formation in a context of difference and plurality, I shortly comment on the end of the traditional confessional school, and the counterproductive effect of Christian values education. To conclude I include the new vision text on the ‘catholic dialogue school’, which my Office recently has produced.status: Publishe
Japanese political culture
This publication is the translation from Japanese of a chapter “Japanese political culture” from a recent monograph “Seiju riron” (“Political Theory) by the distinguished political scientist Inoguchi Takashi, issued in 2015 by Minerva Publishers. His long-time research is not limited by traditional approaches to political culture, which include the investigation of mass consciousness and institution analysis. The researcher showed that the consideration of the specifics of such phenomena as trust and domination of collectivist values appeared to be insufficient to provide a comprehensive and adequate picture of the Japanese political culture. Neither excessively stressing individualism or collectivism, nor extremely underlining trust or distrust, Japanese political culture transforms itself according to endogenous and exogenous changes. The present research includes the conceptualization of such fundamental factors as historical narrative, historical memory, socio-political myths, identity, which are no less important than factors such as the political system design and the specific ratio of political forces
Democracy, governance, and economic performance : East and Southeast Asia
The states of East and Southeast Asia constitute a fertile setting for exploring the links between political and economic development -subjects usually considered in isolation. Democratization occurred, or was consolidated, in a number of these states in the early 1990s but irrespective of the level of democratization, economic performance has been a primary source of political legitimacy in all states in the study. Yet the levels of development vary markedly. Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore have progressively turned to technological innovation as the primary engine of development while the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia have focused on incorporation in regional/global production systems. In evaluating democratic development, the study focuses particularly on the condition of parties and party systems. In relation to economic governance, the idea of a developmental state provides a template against which the practices of individual states are evaluated. The political and policy-making institutions within these states must now negotiate responses to the financial crisis of the late 1990s. Ultimate outcomes will be determined on one hand by the capacity of political systems to sustain popular support and, on the other, by the capacity of institutions to rework dysfunctional economic arrangements.Introduction. -- 1. Vectors of transformation of the political culture of Japan under the influence of global instability (The Russian translation of the Chapter from the book of Takashi Inoguchi "Political theory”)
The article is an extended introduction to the Russian translation of a chapter “Japanese political culture” from a recent monograph by a prominent political thinker Inoguchi Takashi “Seiji riron” (“Political Theory) issued in 2015 by Minerva Publishers. The chapter contains a comprehensive analysis of Japan's political culture, of various factors of its formation (historical and geographical, spiritual, religious, political, socio-cultural), etc. Fundamental doctrines and concepts, as well as the characteristics of political culture that existed in Japan during major periods of history, specific characteristics of the key parameters of the Japanese polity, institutions, and mechanisms of their functioning are also covered by professor Inoguchi. The author of the article commenting on the chapter also analyzes the very notion of "political culture" and its various interpretations by modern political scientists, as well as the set of arguments by the Japanese political philosopher concerning the differences between Western and non-Western political cultures
Audio fingerprint hierarchy searching strategies on GPGPU massively parallel computer
Audio fingerprint was developed for representing the audio based on the content of waveform. With the audio fingerprint database, we can easily manage the song/music with high reliability and flexibility. However, with the well-developed Internet of today, the audio data have become bigger and bigger which make the management of audio/music data more difficult. There are two problems that we need to solve when the audio fingerprint database turn into bigdata: the size of the database needs to be sufficient for storing 10 millions of audio fingerprint and the strategies for searching the nearest song in acceptable time for thousands of queries at once [Nguyen Mau, T., & Inoguchi, Y. (2016). Audio fingerprint hierarchy searching on massively parallel with multi-gpgpus using K-modes and lsh. Eighth international conference on knowledge and systems engineering (KSE) (pp. 49–54). IEEE]. In this research, we propose the methods for storing the audio fingerprint using multiple GPGPU and nearest song searching strategies based on these databases. We also showed that our methods have the significant result for deploying the real system in the future
Legislation is not enough: What it takes to create an Environmental Urban Management Initiative in Egypt
Since Egypt is one of Africa's most populous nations, its struggle to boost its economic performance while achieving sustainable development is now guided by a pioneering legislation which provides an interesting case that merits investigation in international fora. This paper, therefore aims to shed light on Egypt's Environmental Law 4 of 1994 while making the case for an Environmental Urban Management Initiative (EUMI) that should to capitalize on the merits of an enabling legislation. The framework of analysis posits the hypothesis that environmental legislation can jump start an EUMI only if its enforcement is mindful of 4 "i's," namely, institutions, investment, incentives, and information. In consequence, and based on literature reviews with key personnel, an analytical critique identifying the most salient caveats of the law in light of the 4 "i's" will follow. The ensuing synthesis of the findings will be crowned by a list of recommendations to guide the possible establishment of an EUMI in the future.
