Hilden braid groups
No full textLet H g be a genus g handlebody and MCG 2n(T g) be the group of the isotopy classes of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of T g = ∂H g, fixing a given set of 2n points. In this paper we study two particular subgroups of MCG 2n(T g) which generalize Hilden groups defined by Hilden in [Generators for two groups related to the braid groups, Pacific J. Math. 59 (1975) 475486]. As well as Hilden groups are related to plat closures of braids, these generalizations are related to Heegaard splittings of manifolds and to bridge decompositions of links. Connections between these subgroups and motion groups of links in closed 3-manifolds are also provided. © 2012 World Scientific Publishing Company

Specific integrin alpha and beta chain phosphorylations regulate LFA-1 activation through affinity-dependent and -independent mechanisms

regulation and cytoskeletal coupling, but the molecular mechanisms behind this process have remained incompletely understood. In this study, we report that the phosphorylation
of each cytoplasmic domain of the leukocyte
function-associated antigen-1 integrin mediates different modes of integrin activation. Alpha Chain phosphorylation
on Ser1140 is needed for conformational changes in the integrin after chemokine- or integrin ligand-induced activation or after activation induced by active Rap1
(Rap1V12). In contrast, the beta chain Thr758 phosphorylation
mediates selective binding to 14-3-3 proteins in response to inside-out activation through the T cell receptor, resulting in cytoskeletal rearrangements. Thus, site-specific phosphorylation of the integrin cytoplasmic domains is important for the dynamic regulation of these complex receptors in cells

No full textWilhelm Fabricius von Hilden (1560-1634) or also known with his Latinized name Guilielmus Fabricius Hildanus is considered the founder of scientific German surgery. He introduced new surgical techniques and invented new surgical instruments for the surgical treatment of nasal polyps, stone bladder, breast and ocular cancer, hydrocele, and ascites, while very ingenious were his amputation techniques. His most important surgical treatise was Observationem et curationem chirurgicam centuriae sex (Six Hundred Surgical Observations and Treatments) first published in 1606. © 2018, © The Author(s) 2018

On the Borromean orbifolds: geometry and arithmetic

M. Hilden et al., Invent. Math. 87 (1987), no. 3, 441–456; H. M. Hilden, M. T. Lozano and J. M. Montesinos, in Differential topology (Siegen, 1987), 1–13, Lecture Notes in Math., 1350, Springer, Berlin, 1988;] on universal knots, links and groups, which shows that every closed oriented 3-manifold has the structure of an arithmetic orbifold. Lectures on 3-fold simple coverings and 3-manifolds
No full textThe author presents various ideas, proofs, constructions and tricks connected with branched coverings of 3-manifolds. After an introductory section on 2-fold branched coverings of S3 the main theme of 3-fold irregular coverings is introduced.
A short proof is given of the Montesinos-Hilden theorem concerning the presentation of a (closed, oriented) 3-manifold as an irregular 3-fold covering of S3. Coloured links, associated with irregular 3-fold coverings, are discussed, and moves on coloured links which do not alter the associated covering.
The last section contains an elegant proof of a theorem of Hilden and the author: Every closed oriented 3-manifold is a simple 3-fold covering of S3 branched over a knot so that the branching cover bounds an embedded disc. A consequence of this is the fact that every such 3-manifold is parallelizable. Finally the following result of H. M. Hilden , M. T. Lozano and the author [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 279 (1983), no. 2, 729–735;] is proved: Every closed oriented 3-manifold is the pullback of any 3-fold simple branched covering p:S3→S3 and some smooth map Ω:S3→S3 transversal to the branching set of p.
