ESL teachers’ perceptions of good mentoring practice in Senegal: An indigenous, postcolonial, and sociocultural analysis

The focus of this dissertation is an analysis of how two pre-service mentor teachers described and practiced good mentoring. The mentor teachers were associated with the English language teacher education program at Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar, Senegal. The findings suggest that good mentoring practice required a complex set of skills and knowledge. The mentors’ emotional intelligence was significant to how they provided valuable support to mentees. They adopted a holistic approach to good mentoring drawn from indigenous knowledge and professional experiences related to the complexity of practice and the developmental process of becoming a good practitioner. The data were collected from two mentor teachers–Talla and Anne Marie. There are five sections to describe this research. The first one is a discussion of Talla’s perceptions of good mentoring practice using a metaphor he initiated. In the second section, I describe Anne Marie’s view of mentoring as a form of collaboration based on justice, compassion, leadership, and a process of negotiation. The third section presents the importance of interconnectedness and Talla’s developmental approach to mentoring. The fourth theme draws from Anne Marie’s case and addresses her view of mentoring as an example of professional ethics. The fifth theme draws from both cases and discusses their assessment of the lack of collaboration with the FASTEF teacher education program. To interpret my findings, I used three perspectives—indigenous, postcolonial, and sociocultural theories. From these perspectives, I argue that the teachers’ holistic approach to mentoring reflected principles of indigeneity; postcolonial writings provided a critical perspective related to teaching English in a postcolonial educational setting; and sociocultural theories provided a way to interpret the cultural, linguistic, and spiritual influences on the mentor teachers’ perspectives of good mentoring.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. Security Analysis of a Cryptosystem Based on Subspace Subcodes

    No full text
In 2019, Berger et al. introduced a code-based cryptosystem using quasi-cyclic generalized subspace subcodes of Generalized Reed-Solomon codes (GRS). In their scheme, the underlying GRS code is not secret but a transformation of codes over F2m to codes over F2 is done by choosing some arbitrary F2 -subspaces Vi of F2m and by using the natural injection Vi⊂F2m↪F2m. In this work, we study the security of the cryptosystem with some additional assumption. In addition to the knowledge of the GRS code, we introduce a new kind of attack in which the subspaces are corrupted. We call this attack “known subspace attack” (KSA). Although this assumption is unrealistic, it allows us to better understand the security of this scheme. We are able to show that the original parameters are not secure; in practice this however does not break the original proposal. In this paper, we provide new parameters for Berger et al.’s scheme which are secure against the known subspace attack

EXPERIMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF CHROMIUM IMMOBILIZATION IN CONTAMINATED SOIL BY IN SITU CHEMICAL REDUCTION

The aim of the present research was to compare the effectiveness of iron sulfate and nano zero valent iron in the chemical reduction of Cr (VI). The experiments were performed on a soil collected at an industrial site: it also resulted polluted by nickel, as a result of a long-term industrial activity. The experimental tests were performed under several operating conditions: the main parameter investigated were the amount of chemical with respect to chromium content, the presence of oxygen in the slurry, and the liquid (L) vs. solid (S) ratio. The soil was fully characterized after each tests, to perform mass balances, and sequential extractions were carried out to assess the metals mobility induced by the washing with the solution containing the reducing agent. Results show that iron sulfate successfully reduced Cr (VI): within 16 hours of treatment the residue amount of all the investigated metals was below the threshold allowed by Italian Environmental Regulation for an industrial reuse

OF MASTER THESIS Author: Bc. Kateřina Králová Supervisor: MUDr. Tereza Gueye Title of master thesis: Evaluation of Occupational Therapy Intervention in Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation of Cerebrovascular Units Abstract This diploma thesis deals with the evaluation of occupational interventions on the specific separation of beds of early rehabilitation of the cerebrovascular center of the General University Hospital in Prague. The subject of interest is primarily the results of the assessment obtained through the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment. The thesis has two main objectives, namely mapping and analyzing the tools used to assess self-sufficiency and cognitive functions in the department. You can find the description of the evaluation tools in the theoretical part of the thesis. It is also an overview of the topic of the selected topic and a brief description of the system of cerebrovascular care in the Czech Republic. The second objective was to evaluate variables such as length of hospitalization and cognitive status in relation to patient self-sufficiency at the end of hospitalization. Three hypotheses have been identified to meet this goal. The practical part describes the results of the used tools for a particular department. The research group..

In vitro evaluation of the potential of ciclopirox to induce resistance in Trichophyton rubrum, in comparison to terbinafine, amorolfine, and itraconazole

    No full text
The main causative agent of dermatophytosis is Trichophyton rubrum, a widespread filamentous fungus that can infect keratinized tissue such as skin, nails and hair. T rubrum is known to account for almost 70% of all dermatophyte infections. Several antifungal drugs have become available for the treatment of dermatophytosis and among these, terbinafine (TRB), amorolfine (AMF), itraconazole (ITC), and ciclopirox (CPX) are the most frequently used to treat T rubrum infections. Although, therapeutic strategies based on the use of TRB, AMF, ITC or CPX are generally considered effective, the onset of resistant strains against some of these antifungal agents has been reported
