Migrazione, separazione coniugale e ruoli di genere. Il caso delle lavoratrici domestiche in Italia
Migration, marital separation and gender roles. The case of female domestic workers in Italy
Asher Colombo and Tiziana Caponio
In a gender perspective, migration has been interpreted either as an event penalising women job careers, subordinated to that of their male partners, or as an opportunity of emancipation and gender roles’ redefinition. Two distinct figures are at the centre of these studies, i.e. the tied woman in the first case, and the female first migrant in the second. Far less attention has been devoted to how gender relations can be affected by the intersection of two particularly stressful life-course events as migration and marital separation. Even though a few studies have noticed a significant correlation between these two events in the lives of international migrants, implications in terms of gender roles redefinition appear contradictory.
In this article we intend to contribute to the analysis of the intersection between migration, marital separation and gender relations on the basis of the analysis of 121 life histories of divorced or separated female domestic workers in Italy. By adopting a multidimensional perspective on gender relations, considering both women’s roles in the family (from mainly wife and mother to sole breadwinner) and gender models of reference (more oriented towards the traditional family or individual autonomy), we point out how the impact of the two events, i.e. migration and separation, is open-ended and can give way to different and unexpected paths of redefinition
Towards a security-oriented migration policy model? Evidence from the Italian case
The article discusses the evolution of the recent Italian policy by testing the 'security-oriented model' hypothesis
Posibility to improve the quality characteristics of olive-pomace oils and to enhance differentiation with refined olive-pomace oil
An investigation was carried out to evaluate the oxidative and hydrolytic degradation of 37
olive-pomace oils marketed in southern Italy and to compare the results with those obtained from 10
deodorised olive-pomace oils representative of large stocks of oil obtained after the ®nal step of
re®ning. One aim of the research was to ascertain the quality characteristics of commercial olivepomace
oils; another was to verify whether the legally prescribed addition of virgin olive oil to re®ned
pomace oil, so that the ®nal product may be classi®ed commercially as olive-pomace oil, was actually
suf®cient to justify upgrading. The analytical methods used were silica gel column chromatography
and high-performance size exclusion chromatography. The data obtained showed that the ®nal retail
olive-pomace oils had a lower degree of oxidative degradation than the re®ned oils, as indicated by the
lower values obtained when summing the proportions of triglyceride oligopolymers and oxidised
triglycerides. Conversely, hydrolytic degradation, which was evaluated by determining diglycerides,
proved to be the same in the two categories of oil. The proportions of virgin olive oil added are small, as
indicated by the statistically indistinguishable values of triglyceride oligopolymers and free fatty acids
obtained. The possibility of setting a limit to the amount of triglyceride oligopolymers present in the
commercial category of olive-pomace oil has been considered. This limit would ensure standardisation
of the level of oxidation and, consequently, of the quality of marketed oils and would enhance differentiation between olive-pomace oil and re®ned olive-pomace oil
Influence of olive crushing temperature on phenols in olive oil
An experimental investigation was carried
out to evaluate the influence the different temperatures
at which olives are hammer-crushed and paste kneaded
had on the quality of oil and particularly on the phenolic
components. The results obtained showed that
temperature influenced the diffusion of phenolic compounds
in oil. Greater amounts of hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol,
caffeic acid, hydroxycaffeic acid and oleuropeine
were measured in oils obtained from previously refrigerated
olives. Kneading brought about a reduction of
total phenols when it was performed on olives crushed
at a higher temperature (18 7C) while it led to a slight
increase when it was executed on pastes of previously
refrigerated olives (6 7C)

Competing frames of immigrant integration in the EU: geographies of social inclusion in Italian regions
After the federal reform of 2001, Italian regions have gained greater autonomy in matters of social policy, including immigrant integration. In this paper. we assess frames of immigrant integration in eight Italian regions, i.e. Piedmont, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna in the North, Umnbria, Marche and Abruzzi in the Centre, Basilicata and Calabria in the South, against EU equal treatment and mobility rights-based regime. Through a diachronic analysis of the regions' official documents on immigrants'integration approved in the period 2000-2010, we shall consider: 1) the policy priorities identified and the measures funded and 2) the implementation structures. The analysis points out how the frames of immigrants integration emerging at a regional level shape different geographies of social inclusion which are sometimes openly in contradiction with the EU discourse on equal treatment and mobility rights. Immigration is perceived more as an economic asset for local labour markets' unsatisfied demand for low-qualified, flexible, and often informal and knowledge-based European economy
Migrazioni globali, integrazioni locali. Stranieri in Italia
