Protected Open Space Inventory: Readington Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey

    No full text
This document provides an inventory of open space in Readington Township including parkland, conservation easements, rights of way, public land, semi-public land, and farmland. The project examines the need to consider the planning of open space protection for the future as opposed to letting the current trend of sprawling development continue. It also highlights possible linkages of open space that could improve the use of larger green ways and enhance natural resource areas

Realism or Idealism? Corporate social responsibility and the employee stakeholder in the global fast-food Industry

    No full text
The more extreme forms of employee exploitation usually found in third world or developing countries, often receives a lot of media attention. Much less is said about the exploitation of employees in the industrialised West, where it is often assumed that companies - especially those advocating corporate social responsibility (CSR) - will not only respect employee¿s rights, by adhering to national and supranational law, but will also provide employees with decent pay and working conditions. This paper critically examines this assumption by providing a qualitative international analysis of the employment practices of the McDonald¿s Corporation. The findings suggest that despite being a strong advocate for CSR, low wages, abuses of labour rights and health safety standards and union-busting practices are a feature of employment at McDonald¿s in most countries. In this context the concept of CSR is fundamentally unrealistic and can be seen as little more than a clever employer-driven public relations exercise aimed at avoiding harder forms regulation

"fl: Reflexions on Life Abbreviated" - Nicholas Royle

    No full text

Home country advantage? The influence of Italian, German and Austrian employee representatives in the UniCredit European Works Council

    No full text
This article examines the first European Works Council (EWC) to be established in the Italian banking sector, at UniCredit. It focuses on the interaction between Italian, German and Austrian delegations of employee representatives and on the perspectives and practices that reflect their different cultural and institutional backgrounds in industrial relations. Much of the literature suggests that employee representatives from the home country of a multinational company are likely to mould EWC structures in accordance with their own national backgrounds and have greater confidence in dealing with central management in EWC meetings. Our findings partly substantiate this argument, but also suggest that minority delegations, when they have the benefit of strong national institutional arrangements and less fragmented union patterns, are more likely to be cohesive and experienced and therefore are able to challenge management and sometimes win significant arguments over strategy

Dream Treatment: On Sitting Down to Read a Letter from Freud

    No full text
This text seeks to analyse a dream in which Freud writes to the author. Particular attention is given to the notion of treatment and, in a memorable phrase from Hélène Cixous, ‘how to treat the dream as a dream’. Royle draws on diverse references (Donald Trump, Hugh Laurie, Howard Jacobson, Wallace Stevens, Jacques Derrida and Cixous), and focuses on a range of Freud's writings (a letter to Thomas Mann, The Interpretation of Dreams, ‘A Disturbance of Memory on the Acropolis’ and ‘A Note on the Unconscious in Psychoanalysis’), in order to explore the relationship between psychoanalysis and literature. Particular attention is given to free association, deferred effect and the epistolary. </jats:p

Clinical outcome and bromodeoxyuridine derived proliferation indices in 75 invasive breast carcinomas

    No full text
INTRODUCTION: In vivo labelling of human breast tumours with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) and analysis by flow cytometry (FCM) allows the labelling index (LI), S phase duration (t(s)) and the potential doubling time (t(pot)) of the tumour to be estimated.METHODS: The data for a series of tumour specimens from 75 patients with invasive breast carcinoma were reported in 1991, correlated with their lymph-node status, tumour size and grade.RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: This study reports the follow-up data over 10 years in respect of time to recurrence and death from the disease. There were no significant correlations between proliferation data and outcome measures. No adverse events were identified which could be attributed to the use of the halogenated pyrimidine label in vivo
