    No full text
[EN] This study was designed to determine hair cortisol levels in the New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit and to examine possible differences in the cortisol levels of hair samples collected from different body regions in stable environmental conditions. The experiment was performed on eight 18 month-old female NZW rabbits. All animals were shaved to collect hair samples from 26 different body regions. Hair cortisol levels were determined by the RIA method. The mean hair cortisol concentration for the 26 samples in the 8 animals was 2.12±0.05 pg/mg (mean±standard error). This study reveals individual hair cortisol distributions in the 8 animals (P0.05) in hair cortisol levels among the different body sites in each of the animals.Comin, A.; Zufferli, V.; Peric, T.; Canavese, F.; Barbetta, D.; Prandi, A. The study of fetal sexual steroid hormones production during pregnancy deserve scientific interest in both humans and animals, to better understand the normal sexual development, but also in the recently investigated impact on the future health outcomes (Kuijper et al., 2013). Many studies reported the early production of testosterone by the testes during the fetal stage of development; however, also estrogens were recognized to play a role in developing programming. Because of the scarce knowledge about this topic in the dog, the present study was aimed to assess the 17-β-estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) amniotic concentrations at birth in normal newborn dogs. The study was conducted on 31 normal puppies, 16 males and 15 females, born by 10 healthy bitches belonging to several breeds, submitted to elective Caesarean section at term, with litter-size ranging between 1 to 5. Amniotic fluid from each puppy was collected (Meloni et al, 2014) and immediately stored at – 20 ° C until analysis by RIA. Amniotic E2 concentrations in male and female puppies were 124±66.82 pg/ml and 109±42.15 pg/ml, respectively; while amniotic T concentrations were 124±91.24 pg/ml and 114±71.72 pg/ml, in males and females’ puppies, respectively, without significant differences between the two genders. The preliminary results showed that both E2 and T were detectable in canine amniotic fluid, but without differences between male and female puppies. The wide standard deviation found deserve further investigations on a larger number of subjects, to identify possible causes, such as the effect played by the bitch

V magistrskem delu obravnavamo analizo nabavnih virov in nadgrajujemo proces odločanja z uporabo večkriterijskega odločitvenega modela. In the master\u27s thesis, we discuss the analysis of procurement sources and we upgrade the decision-making process using a multi-criteria decision model. Due to increasing competitiveness and the desire to make purchasing savings, the selected company Ebm-papst started searching for new purchasing sources in the area of Southeast Europe for the aluminum castings product group. With the analysis, we found that the company has only defined the process of evaluating existing suppliers, so we proceeded to upgrade the selection process of a new supplier. In the first step, based on a review of the professional literature, we empirically examine and highlight the most important criteria in selecting a new supplier. These were selected based on the SPM and PPM matrix. For obtaining data, quantitative and qualitative research methods were used. The analysis was performed on the basis of completed questionnaires and assessments performed during a visit to suppliers. An unstructured in-depth interview was also conducted with five experts, purchasers of aluminum castings. Due to the complexity, we divided the decision-making problem into two stages. In the first stage, we defined the exclusion criteria and tested the hypotheses with a t-test. We prepared a decision model using the DEX method and defined four strategies of approach to new suppliers in the inclusion of the latter in the panel of the suppliers, which will have practical implications for the selected company and more. We evaluated twelve suppliers and, based on practical tests, we evaluated the developed model and we also proposed model-related improvements. In conclusion, we made suggestions for improvements for the entire process of selecting new suppliers in the selected company

The contribution examines the first catalogue issued by Aldo Manuzio on 1 October 1498 and in particular the copy in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna (Ink. 7.A.13). A careful examination of the manuscript annotations, known to be by Hartmann Schedel, has enabled the author to identify the volume in which Schedel had the catalogue bound in his lifetime: a copy of Marcantonio Sabellico’s Decades rerum Venetarum (Venice, Andrea Torresani, 1487) also in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Ink. 7.A.7). A detailed description of the item and Schedel's textual and graphic additions reveals for the first time what was one of the most significant books in the humanist's library and allow us to reconstruct the overall context of its use in the years immediately following its publication

    Sexual Hormone Fluctuation in Chinchillas.

The data about chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger) reproduction are limited and in some cases discordant. The aim of this study was to monitor the sexual hormone fluctuation by fecal progesterone level and colpocytology analysis by vaginal smears in order to evaluate the different phases of the oestrus cycle. Twenty-four non pregnant chinchillas aged from 1 to 4 years old and subdivided in three groups were monitored. In contrast with findings reported in other study, the high values of progesterone recorded in autumn suggested the presence of a ciclicity also in this period. The data indicate that chinchilla presents a continuous cycle

Peripubertal Testosterone, 17β-Estradiol and Progesterone Concentrations in Hair and Nails in Dobermann Dogs

Studies about puberty in dogs are few, probably because many factors are involved in the delicate process of puberty onset, leading to difficulties in the proper enrollment of subjects. Moreover, the use of blood for monitoring hormonal changes can be problematic, and not feasible for long-term studies. Hair and nails proved to be suitable matrices for the retrospective evaluation of hormones’ long-term accumulation. This study was performed using hair and nails for the evaluation of testosterone (T), 17β-estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) concentrations to assess possible sexual steroid changes during the peripubertal period in dogs. The results, obtained on five males and five females, showed a significant increase in T in hair and nails of males immediately before puberty. In females, a significant increase in E2 at puberty and a marked increase in P4 after puberty was found in both biological specimens. Sex-related differences were detected only for T hair concentrations, but when the sex and sampling time were considered together, hair and nails T and nails P4 concentrations allowed us to discern between male and female dogs at specific sampling times. The results from this study showed that hair and nails are useful biological specimens for the retrospective evaluation of changes in T, E2 and P4 concentrations in peripubertal dogs

In the recent past, tissue materials such as hair/coat and nails/claws have proved to be useful for the study of long-term hormonal changes in humans and animals and shown to be advantageous in terms of being collectable without invasiveness, with a benefit in terms of animal welfare. However, studies using these tissue materials in cats are scarce, especially on sexual hormone measurement. In this study, the concentrations of 17-β-estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) were assessed in 20 male and 18 female domestic postpubertal cats at the time of neutering/spaying during the breeding season. Hormones were measured in coat shaved from the forearm (ACOAT) and from the surgical area (SCOAT); claws were collected from the forearms (CLAWS) and the dewclaws (DCLAWS). Although all these tissue materials were shown to be useful for E2 and T long-term measurement, only T concentrations were higher (p < 0.001) in males from both ACOAT and SCOAT samples when compared to females and therefore useful for distinguishing between the two sexes. Within each sex, E2 and T concentrations can be assessed on coat, but also on the dewclaws, providing an alternative, practical, matrix for sexual steroid measurement in postpubertal cats during the breeding season

Feces are a noninvasive and easily collectible matrix that may help determine cumulative hormone metabolite concentrations over medium-to-long times. To date, 11-oxoetiocholanolone, an important metabolite of cortisol, has been measured in equine and bovine feces solely by an in-house enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Therefore, we validated the use of a commercial ELISA kit (11-oxoetiocholanolone ELISA kit; Cayman Chemical), which had been validated on sheep feces and human urine, to measure 11-oxoetiocholanolone in feces from 42 horses and 32 bulls. The ELISA kit had good precision (intra- and inter-assay CVs: 5.8% and 11.2% for equine feces; 9.9% and 11.2% for bovine feces, respectively), analytical sensitivity (0.186 ng/mL for both equine and bovine feces), and accuracy (parallelism and recovery tests) in determining 11-oxoetiocholanolone concentrations in feces from both species. We found ranges of 11-oxoetiocholanolone concentrations of 1–109 ng/g in equine feces and 40–302 ng/g in feces of bulls. The Cayman Chemical ELISA kit offers a simple and accessible means of analysis of 11-oxoetiocholanolone in equine and bovine fecal samples
