Near-field THz imaging and spectroscopy using a multiple subwavelength aperture modulator
We present a near-field, simultaneous multiple pixel subwavelength THz transmission imaging device based on a solid-state THz spatial modulator. Frequency-division multiplexing is used to acquire multiple pixels simultaneously. The modulator was used to acquire THz transmission images with resolution of λ/4 at 118 µm. The image acquisition speed is 16 times greater than that of a comparable single-aperture subwavelength imaging technique. Additionally, spectroscopic THz imaging with subwavelength spatial resolution can be accomplished with the modulator, and the technique is scalable to at least 100 simultaneous pixels
First Tests of a new Fast Waveform Digitizer for PMT signal read-out from liquid Argon Dark Matter detectors
A new generation Waveform Digitizer board as been recently made available on the market by CAEN. The new board CAEN V1751 with 8 Channels per board, 10 bit, 1 GS/s Flash ADC Waveform Digitizer (or 4 channel, 10 bit, 2 GS/s Flash ADC Waveform Digitizer - Dual Edge Sampling mode) with threshold and Auto-Trigger capabili- ties provides an ideal (relatively low-cost) solution for reading signals from liquid Argon detectors for Dark Matter search equipped with an array of PMTs for the detection of scintillation light. The board was extensively used in real experimental conditions to test its usefulness for possible future uses and to compare it with a state of the art digital oscilloscope. As results, PMT Signal sampling at 1 or 2 GS/s is appropriate for the reconstruction of the fast component of the signal scintillation in Argon (characteristic time of about 4 ns) and the extended dynamic range, after a small customization, allows for the detection of signals in the range of energy needed. The bandwidth is found to be adequate and the intrinsic noise is very low
THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE WARP EXPERIMENT
The WARP detector is a new idea in Dark Matter detection using liquid noble gases, specifically argon. We believe that argon is the medium best suited to detect nuclear recoils coming from interactions with the so called WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles). The detection technique, using two different discrimination methods, is capable of an identification power as high as one event in 108. During the second half of the year 2006 the next, 100 liter, detector will be constructed with an active veto shield to further suppress the background, while currently a 2.3 liter prototype, installed in the Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy), has been taking data since May 2004. The small version of the detector is able to not only provide insight on the operation of a two-phase liquid argon chamber but is also able to provide physics results competitive with the current leading edge experiments
Między nieklasyczną narracją i klasyczną dramaturgią. "Taki pejzaż" Jagody Szelc
Between Classical Narration and Non-classical Dramaturgy. Jagoda Szelc’s Such a Landscape An abandonment of classical narration and a search for unconventional dramaturgical techniques are increasingly observed in the works of students from the Łódź Film School. One such short fi lm illustrating this tendency is Such a Landscape, directed by Jagoda Szelc. To create her individual and original piece, the director employs three traditional dramatic structures – that of an episodic fi lm, a Greek tragedy, and one connected with using the symbol as a tension-building tool. Jagoda Szelc proves that being sceptical about classical narration does not have to indicate a rejection of the whole tradition of storytelling. Instead, she chooses to use it as a fabric.Between Classical Narration and Non-classical Dramaturgy. THz imaging and microscopy, a multiplexed near-field TeraHertz microscope
None of the THz imaging techniques developed to date, permits high spatial resolution spectroscopic imaging at fast acquisition rates. In the classical THz sub-wavelength imaging with a single aperture, the image is composed by mechanically scanning the sample against a single sub-wavelength aperture. Only one pixel of the final image is acquired for every integration time of a THz photodetector which leads to long acquisition times. A solution to this problem is a multiple sub-wavelength aperture array – an imaging spatial modulator with each of its sub-wavelength apertures acting as a separate pixel. The device function is to provide a multiple pixel imaging capability for a single source/single photodetector THz setup. The increase in image acquisition speed results from the fact that the signals of all apertures are acquired within one integration time of the THz photodetector. This spatial modulator can also be employed for Far-Infrared spectroscopy, resulting in a functional THz imaging-spectroscopy system. The THz modulators optoelectronic performance was thoroughly examined in medium-, long-wave infrared, and THz regimes. This project results in a first ever fully functional, multiple pixel THz imaging microscope. The microscope was used to acquire THz trans-mission images at λ≈118μm with λ/4 resolution
Peryferie ideologii — „patrząc z ukosa” na „Sanatorium pod Klepsydrą” Wojciecha J. Hasa i „Monument” Jagody Szelc
The main topic of the article is the use of ideological criticism (as presented by Slavoj Žižek) as a method in comparative analysis of The Hourglass Sanatorium by W.J. Has and The Monument by J. Szelc. The author not only looks for objective determinations of social reality, but also for its hidden forms. The conclusions allow us to see the dynamics of changes in the symbolic orders that implicitly organize the narrative structures of both films. Furthermore, in this perspective they become a diagnosis of the present in the face of Polish “year of dangerous dreams”
A novel multiplexed THz spatial modulator for fast sub-wavelength imaging and spectroscopy
We report on the current state of the development of a sub-wavelength THz spatial modulator array - a multi-pixel THz imaging device. The modulator allows fast image acquisition with greatly improved spatial resolution. Additionally, it is expected that the modulator can be used for multiplexed Fourier Transform Spectroscopy enabling micro-spectroscopy characterization of samples within the THz regime. The device consists of an array of sixteen THz transmission windows (pixels) of sub-wavelength diameter. The transmission of each of the sub-wavelength pixels can be varied electronically allowing amplitude modulation of the THz signal. The complete array of sixteen pixels is frequency multiplexed. The modulator can deliver a 4x4 pixel image within a single integration time of a photodetector. The array is mechanically scanned over the sample, yielding a factor of 16 improvement in the speed of image acquisition in comparison to a single hole, sub-wavelength scanning imaging technique.Several variants of the device with varying pixel diameters were already fabricated and are currently tested and characterized. As such, we will present and discuss some of the experimental results. These include the characterization of the device within MWIR and LWIR bands as well as some calculations of the device's expected performance within the THz band
