The role and effectiveness of tour guide in influencing tourist behaviour
Research about the problems that occur in the interpretation spectrum has a lot been done, but still less study of the relationship between interpretation techniques and tourists experience needs while selecting the destination as a holiday destination. This study was conducted to understand the extent to which the role of interpretation (tour guide) in educating the tourists about conservation awareness. Pahang National Park becomes the study area because it is one of the areas that have a best nature tour guide in Malaysia. Quantitative and qualitative techniques are used because it is able to understand the relationship between the role of interpretation and tourists, more depth. This study will measure the quality of tour guides whether they are eligible to provide information or education on conservation to the tourists. Furthermore, this study will also determine whether the tourists do not really want to be educated about conservation or the quality of tour guides do not achieve the quality of required level. The findings show international and domestic tourists actually really want to be educated about conservation when they visit the National Park, but the quality of tour guides still do not reach the level needed. Factors cause the poor quality of guides that found in this study be seen will help in planning the development of the tourism industry in providing effective technical interpretation (tour guides) to tourists in the future
Perceived images of Kuala Lumur from the perspective of international tourists
Most existing literature on destination image studies focus on measuring tourist perceived image using the perspective of ‘before and after’ visitation. However, a question arises as to how these efforts represent an accurate image of the tourist experience during their visit in a particular destination. It is crucial since it gives a perspective of the actual image of a destination. Therefore, this study aims to capture the overall image perceived by tourist before, during and after visitation at an urban tourism destination. Kuala Lumpur was selected as a case study due to its aggressive attempt on becoming a world class business destination, where promoting an accurate destination image is crucial for city positioning and only achievable if the image is portrayed from the demand side. Within this context, the technological innovation and trends, for instance, increase the possibility of capturing actual image that is perceived by tourist during visitation. The Volunteer Employed Photographer (VEP) technique was used due to its advantage in capturing affective elements of a destination and the photographs indirectly represent real tourist emotions towards a destination. Capturing affective elements is vital as it contributes towards the overall image of a destination. A total of 384 international tourists participated in two stages of the survey for this study, using the questionnaire and VEP techniques and conducted within the Kuala Lumpur Business District (KLBD). Descriptive and inferential analyses were used to obtain mean, variance and standard deviation from the collected data. One-Way ANOVA, t-test and correlation analyses were further used to investigate significant differences across variables. The findings indicate that international tourists perceived KLBD differently before and during visitation. Before visitation, cognitive and affective images of tourists differed according to their demography, information sources, and travel characteristic. Elements of expenditure and food were dominant in the cognitive images while culture, expenditure, and food were dominant in the affective images perceived by tourists before visiting city. Supplemental photo analysis showed that image during visitation is constantly changing as the tourists experience different locations based on their movement and preferences. Images of places, crowds of people, food and expenditure activities dominated the overall photo content. However, these perceived images are influenced and dictated by tourist’s age, country of origin, and travel companion. The overall evaluation of the actual images show that KLBD offers passive activities with physical attributes triggering positive and negative attitudes with active emotions. Acknowledging the image changes perceived by tourist on each stage helps in understanding the image influencing tourist tendency to revisit the destination. Acquiring image perceived by tourist during visitation is critical to assist tourism agencies and authorities in promoting accurate image in order to promote higher tourism satisfaction since different tourists have different preferences
A fuzzy multi-criteria framework for the development of sustainable community-based tourism in Malaysia
Community-based tourism (CBT) is a growing niche market that has positively impacted many developing countries including Malaysia. CBT in Malaysia is recognised as the Malaysian Homestay Experience Programme (MHEP) which is under the coordination of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. Previous studies have looked into stakeholders’ contributions and the roles they play in the MHEP. However, the sustainability criteria from the multi-stakeholder perspective should be understood. The collaboration between tourism stakeholders is pivotal in understanding their perspective by considering their diverse viewpoints on critical issues and bridging the current knowledge gap. This research aims to investigate how stakeholders could participate more efficiently in developing and employing a sustainable MHEP. This study applied a mixed-method approach and was divided into two phases. The first phase was the multistage qualitative research and the second phase involved a questionnaire survey with structured questions distributed to the multi-stakeholders. Academicians, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, businesses, host communities, homestay coordinators and tourists were involved in the data collection process. The study applied a two-stage methodology by integrating two multicriteria decision-making techniques, Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory and analytic network process to extend the existing evaluation criteria and weightage. The multi-criteria framework will provide stakeholders as decision-makers the ability to devise plans that are sustainable and compatible with conservation and rural development strategies. This study is decisive in helping stakeholders develop sustainable CBT and contribute to government policies, specifically in terms of MHEP development and management aligned with the Malaysia rural development policy. Sustainable CBT can be an efficient rural economic development tool to generate broader economic distribution and create a more comprehensive spatial development. Furthermore, this study also provides valuable insights for tourism policymakers in terms of efficient policy interventions related to CBT in accelerating sustainable development involving environmental, economic and socio-cultural growth
Mapping tourist movement pattern using global positioning system (GPS) as an aid to sustainable urban attraction management
Understanding tourist movement pattern is crucial for tourism stake holders to produce a viable tour product and offering quality place of interest and preference. This is due to the fact that it can increase tourist choices and satisfaction as well as generating opportunities and impacts for destination management as well as generating critical mass for economic benefit of the attraction. However, the theoretical knowledge on how tourist actually move still in the stage of debating where some researcher believe that tourist move influence by their motivation and individual behavioral and the other researcher argue that tourist actually move based on the setting of urban scape and facilities provided in the cities. This situation will limiting the ability of destination stakeholder or authorities to acquire sufficient information in determine tourist relevancy on selection of activities, spending pattern and use of space. Lack of knowledge on this scenario will lead the tourism planner designing the incompatible facilities and activities in the tourism destination for the tourist. Another vital need to understand on how tourists move is due to sharing the spaces with the local residence and the collision between them may lead to positive or negative impact depending how the policy makers and tourism planner provide the facilities and urban infrastructure. Majorly the tourism destination in south East Asia still lack of attentiveness when it comes to planning the tourist development. The tourism authorities develop the tourism product based on the assumption that they believe the tourist need but not based on the how the tourist really behave when their going on holidays. The emergence of advanced tracking technologies such as Geographic Information System (GIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) is potentially being seen as suitable tools to recorded precisely on how tourist interchange and easily been updated from time to time. The high-resolution data gain from GPS could be used to regulate the carrying capacity of tourism sites more rationally, develop new attractions, improve the allocation of accommodation services, and reduce friction between tourists and the local population. In the prospect of developing countries mainly in the south-east Asia region, such technologies can help the tourism authorities to develop the quality place of interest and preference based on the data acquired from how the tourist behave at the destination level so the product that been offer will give benefit from various side. Considering using such system is still at its infancy and from the view of tourism planner it is relatively new and not expanded into its maximum potential
An inquiry of perceived image of urban tourism destination through tourist consumption and movement pattern
Identifying the factor that influence the tourist behavior and their decision making process may give a vast information for local authorities in promoting their tourism destination. Destination image is one of the vital factors that persuade tourist to visit the destination. Destination image can be interpreted into three dimensions which are cognitive, affective and conative. Promoting an image that not represents the actual destination will not satisfy tourist perceived value, expectation and loyalty toward the tourism destination. This scenario will hugely affect tourist level of satisfaction and expectation that also influence their tendency to revisit the destination. In order to promoting a good tourism destination image, tourism planner and local authorities must recognize first how the tourist consume the destination. Different types of tourist reflect different types of consumption style and different consumption style reflect difference in movement pattern. Understand how the tourist consumes and move in the destination can give knowledge to authorities in developing a destination images that can match the tourist satisfaction, expectation and of course revisit the destination. Using both qualitative and quantitative method in collecting data will give a better framework to the tourism planner in developing destination image. In-depth interview tell the planner on how actually the tourist construct their cognitive, affective and conative toward the destination. Applying Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) and Visualization Method will indicate the tourist expectation and satisfaction by relatively also show how tourist consume and move within the destination. In the prospect of developing countries mainly in the South-East Asia region, such knowledge can help the tourism authorities to develop and promoting quality destination images based on the data acquired from how actually tourist perceived the place and behave at the destination level so the product that been offer will give benefit from various side
Capturing the actual perceived image of international urban tourist during visitation in Kuala Lumpur
Destination image in Tourism Business District (TBD) especially in designated urban area often fail to capture real tourism image due to the nature that it was pre-conceive and portray from the view of supply side (or authorities and marketer). In other word, inaccurate image have been promoted from the view of supply-side rather than from demand-side (tourist). From the view of demand side, it was known in the existing literature that most of the tourism image studies focusing on measuring tourist perceived image using the idea of ‘before and after’ visitation (pre-visit and post-visit). However, a question arise as to how these efforts really capturing the actual image while tourist experiencing the site (during visit). In this context, the advancement in internet and sharing media technology using phone application increase the possibility in capturing ‘real time’ image or actual perceived image during the visit. One of them is using Volunteer Employed Photographer (VEP) technique. VEP give advantage in reducing cost of labor and equipment to collect the data since the respondent itself acting as a labor by using their own device to capture the image. The innovation and trend on smart phone for instance, allow tourist to capture high resolution photo and instantly shared. VEP in this case is a form of method in data collection that allow qualitative analysis in order to explore in depth the nature and formation of destination image. As Kuala Lumpur targeting to become a world class business city destination, an ideal destination image is critical and actual image will be able to portray correct positioning of the city tourism according to tourist perspective. This paper indicates preliminary findings of 116 international respondents on on-going survey in Kuala Lumpur business district or also known as golden triangle of Kuala Lumpur representing Bukit Bintang, Raja Chulan and Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC). The early findings suggest the need to facilitate theoretical integration of tourist-determined images with destination-determined images
Changes of city image in Kuala Lumpur
Previous studies on destination image have attempted to capture the differences in destination perceive image between the before and after trips. However, not much study has focused on the during-visit perceived image. This is crucial as to how the tourists actually experience the destination is when they actually visit the destination. The study aims to explore the actual image and image changes at each stage perceived by tourists. A total of 384 international tourists participated in the study involving two stages, using questionnaire and VEP techniques in Kuala Lumpur (KL). Volunteer Employed Photographer (VEP) techniques were used in capturing affective elements of the destination. Finding shows that international tourists perceived KL differently before and during visitation. Before visitation, cognitive and affective images of tourists differed according to their demography, information sources, and travel characteristic. Elements of expenditure and food were dominant in the cognitive images while culture, expenditure, and food were dominant in the affective images perceived by tourists before visiting city. Acknowledging the image changes helps in understanding the tourist preferences and loyalty towards the destination
Tourist technological engagement through mobile services at destination
Mobile utilisation had dictated tourist on-site travel consumption and psychologically altering the way tourist experience destination. Mobile services was seen as a mediator in tourist-destination encounter, enabling tourist to glimpse space in slightly different perspective. The high dependency on mobile services, especially among the new tourist generation, was presumed to be influential in igniting curiosity and imposing emotional impact. The distinction of experience obtained from techengagement alter the current structure of experience and constructing new form of technology mediated travel experience that constitute of technology-emotion relation. Particularly, their enjoyment towards this human-technology engagement in mediating the destination encounter is believed to be the antecedent of the overall travel satisfaction. Therefore, perspective on tourist on-site mobile utilization pattern is important in further understanding the technology mediated travel experience.
Information pertaining tourist spatial technological engagement was collected in understanding its influence on travel experience. Millennial generation was specified as the target group since they hold the demand of current tourism industry. On-going questionnaire survey of 221 respondents was conducted on 55 identified main attractions within Kuala Lumpur city centre. Preliminary findings reveals that tourist
perceived influence of mobile engagement does varies based on places within the destination. This is an early evidence that technology mediated travel experience does lead to development of emotional experience and improves destination interaction

Tourist behaviour through consumption in Melaka world heritage site
The burgeoning popularity of World Heritage Sites (WHSs) has negatively impacted the sustainability of the historic environment of the sites due to the increasing number of tourist arrivals. Too many pressures from human activity, especially tourists could potentially damage the physical condition of the site and compromise its Outstanding Universal Value. Understanding tourist behaviour is one of the important aspects in managing a WHS through their consumption at the destination. The study aims to measure international tourist behaviour by integrating their non-spatial and spatial characteristics. A total of 384 Free Independent Tourists participated in the survey in Melaka WHS. Questionnaires, trip diaries, and tracking devices were the main instruments for capturing data. The evaluation of tourist behaviour shows that international tourists consume more spaces and time at primary elements such as historical attractions. However, they consume more money at secondary elements such as food and shopping. The finding is important for responsible authorities as it provides a different point of view in managing tourist behaviour. The results can be used to establish effective tools to develop a better visitor management plan for Melaka WHS
