The impact of leadership on politics and Ebenezer Theodore Joshua and Robert Milton Cato, 2012

    No full text
This study examines the contributions of Joshua and Cato as government and opposition political leaders in the politics and political development of SVG. Checklist of variable of political development is used to ensure objectivity. Various theories of leadership and political development are highlighted. The researcher found that these theories cannot fully explain the conditions existing in small island nations like SVG. SVG is among the few nations which went through stages of transition from colonialism to associate statehood, to independence. This had significant effect on the people and particularly the leaders who inherited a bankrupt country with limited resources and persistent civil disobedience. With regards to political development, the mass of the population saw this as some sort of salvation for fulfillment of their hopes and aspirations. Joshua and Cato led the country for over thirty years. In that period, they have significantly changed the country both in positive and negative directions. These leaders made promises of a better tomorrow if their followers are prepared to make sacrifices. The people obliged with sacrifices, only to become disillusioned because they have not witnessed the promised salvation. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that in the process of competing for political power, these leaders have created a series of social ills in SVG. Discourses and other issues are centered on personality and political party loyalty. This has stifled loyalty to the state and helped to maintain an authoritarian system

Memory, performance and affects : genocide in the films by Joshua Oppenheimer

    No full text
The starting point for the reflection on Joshua Oppenheimer's films is the concept of performance by Rebecca Schneider - especially her remarks on historical reconstructions - and the theory of affects by Jill Bennett (because the actual effect of performative practices is being "affectively moved"). In the author's reading of The Act of Killing (2012) and The Look of Silence (2014), these historical performances registered by the director, with their ability to affect emotions, i.e. to provoke specific affective reactions (disgust, repulsion, sympathy, fascination), offer a new way in which genocide can be talked about. Starting from the analysis of Oppenheimer's films, the author wonders how the memory of historical events is constructed and reconstructed, to what extent the past exerts influence on the present, and, finally, whether it is possible to observe yourself "from the outside" to face your own affections

Joshua Lederberg, 1979. Photo by Ingbert Grüttner Lederberg, Joshua (1925-2008) was an American geneticist, a pioneer in the field of bacterial genetics, who shared the 1958 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine (with George W. Beadle and Edward L. Tatum) for discovering the mechanisms of genetic recombination in bacteria. Born in 1925 and raised in New York City, Dr. Lederberg received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1947 and then joined the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he founded the department of medical genetics 10 years later. In 1959, he moved to Stanford University, where he was chair of the newly established department of genetics. There he also expanded his research into the fields of artificial intelligence and exobiology. In 1978, Dr. Lederberg became the fifth president of The Rockefeller University, a position he held until 1990 when he retired from the presidency and became University Professor, Raymond and Beverly Sackler Scholar and head of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics and Informatics, where his research continued. Throughout his later research career, Dr. Lederberg was highly active in international science and human rights advocacy, serving as a public policy adviser to nine United States presidential administrations and authoring a weekly Washington Post column, “Science and Man,” for six years. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of The Royal Society. In addition to the Nobel Prize and the Medal of Freedom (2006), the nation\u27s highest civil award, Lederberg received many honors, including the National Medal of Science (1989). He was elected a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1957), Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London (1979), and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1982). Among his honorary degrees was one conferred on Lederberg by The Rockefeller University (1999). The author of more than 300 scientific and policy-related articles, Lederberg also was the editor of several books, including Papers in Microbial Genetics: Bacteria and Bacterial Viruses (1951), Emerging Infections: Microbial Threats to Health in the United States (1992), and Biological Weapons: Limiting the Threat (1999). Wydział Teologii, Instytut Nauk Teologicznych; promotor pracy: ks. dr hab. Dariusz Dziadosz, prof. The aim of the dissertation was to consider all the aspects of the literary, exegetical, and theological analysis of the selected passages of Israel's Deuteronomistic Historiography that describe various manifestations of rûah. For the need of the appropriate interpretation of different forms and the meaning of the Hebrew root rwh appearing in the subsequent sections of Deuteronomistic historiography (Joshua-2 Kings), the author carried out the etymological and semantical analysis and described general semantic field for this notion in the introductory chapter. The research tools of the historical-critical method as well as the narrative and intertex trial method employed in chapters 2-4 provided answers to the questions of the objective that motivated the Deuteronomistic redactors of these books in such a frequent and various use of the notion rûah for the description of successive phases of the history of Hebrew generations. In chapter 2, which opens the exegetical-theological section of the present dissertation and constitutes its fundamental core, the author focused on the role of rûah in the pre-monarchic period (Joshua-Judges). The activity of the spirit of YHWH in times of the transformation from the theocratic to the monarchic system in Israel during the rule of Saul and David (1 and 2 Samuel) was the subject of the research in chapter 3. The last stage of the research (chapter 4) comprises the analysis of the texts about rûah referring to the period of the divided monarchy, and included in the books of Kings
