Metabolic Changes in Chemical Constituents, Flowering Behavior, Yield And Fruit Quality of 'Anna' Apple (Malus Sylvestris, Mill) Trees with Foliar Application Some Compounds
<p>This investigation was carried out during the two successive seasons of 2006 and 2007 to investigate the effect of potassium nitrate, garlic extract and onion extract on bud break, growth, yield and some chemical constituents of "Anna" apple (<i>Malus sylvestris</i>, Mill) variety. The trees were grown in loamy sand soil, and sprayed with six treatments (potassium nitrate 10%), garlic extract (20%), onion extract (20%), potassium nitrate (5%) mixed with garlic extract (10%), potassium nitrate (5%) mixed with onion extract (10%) and control. Generally, it was found that all studied growth parameters, date of flower bud break, percentage of bud break, fruit-setting, fruit weight, fruit size, fruit number/tree, yield/tree (kg) and some chemical constituents of leaves (total chlorophyll ,total carbohydrates, total protein, nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium contents) and some chemical constituents of fruits (Total Soluble Solids (T.S.S.), T.S.S/acid ratio, vitamin C, water content %, total free amino acids, total carbohydrates, total sugars and reducing sugars) were increased with the application of the different treatments. The best results were obtained from the treatments of potassium nitrate at 5% mixed with onion extract at 10%, potassium nitrate at 5% mixed with garlic extract at 10% and potassium nitrate at 10%. On the contrary, the same treatments decreased total acidity and total phenols in fruits as compared to the control. It could be recommended to use potassium nitrate at 5% in combination with onion extract or garlic extract at 10% for improving bud break, growth, yield and chemical constituents of apple trees or fruits.</p>
The African Employee and Industrial Accidents: Thematic Evaluation and Projections for Safer Workplace in Nigeria
<p>Accidents claim not only valuable assets but also human lives, most times involving professionals who do not have immediate replacement. To identify and evaluate industrial accidents in organizational firms, a health facility of a large public organization with over 368 employee engaged in production activities was targeted in Southern Nigeria. Preliminary desk review of within-organization's security structures, in-depth interviews of on-ground situation on accident trend at workplace in an associated forestry (wood-producing) outfit bordering the study area as well as questionnaire administration to 162 employee (low and middle class employee) were altogether employed to generate relevant information. Questionnaire covered forms of industrial accidents, causes, individual employee accident history and employee socioeconomic background details. Identified accident causes were subjected to Principal Component Analysis (PCA) using Varimax Orthogonal Rotation Method and scree plot to pin down top three forms of industrial accidents in the organization. In the results, six different forms of accidents were identifiable stemming from 10-13 varying causes. Major accidents reportedly result from employee operational attitude, technical errors and administrative lapses indicative of the level of preparedness and drive to control and manage emergencies and epidemics. The study therefore suggests public sector drive on work ethics, adherence and improvement in safety regulations and installations, frequent/periodic retraining as well as closer supervision of activity by superiors of all categories of employee.</p>
Commercial Production of Fish Squash Patties Utilizing Local Milkfish (Bangus)
<p>Manufacturers appear to be cognizant of the necessity of launching new product innovations nowadays. The health advantages of milkfish are another reason to consume it. In response to the product innovation challenge, the commercial manufacture of Fish Squash Patties using local Milkfish (<i>Chanos-chanos</i>) was considered. The purpose of this research was to create Fish-Squash Patties using native Bangus (<i>Chanos-chanos</i>). The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) examined the product utilizing Sensory Evaluation and Microbiological Analysis. Following that, the researchers conducted a taste test and distributed questionnaires assessing the acceptability of the following factors: appearance, scent, taste, and texture. Bangus and Squash have been discovered to work well together as components for patties. The production of patties done by the researcher have made the Fish-Squash Patties safe of consumption since it PASSED the microbiological analysis conducted at DOST Laboratory BulSU Main Campus, City of Malolos, Bulacan in compliance with the BFADstandards.</p>
Rojolele: A Premium Aromatic Rice Variety in Indonesia
<p>Rojolele is an Indonesian traditional rice variety from Klaten (Central Java) that classified as tropical japonica and low land rice which become a premium rice variety and have higher price in the market due to a delicious taste and a fragrance aroma. The agronomic characteristics of Rojolele are having high plant stature with sturdy stems and upright plant shape, thick and rough leaves, strong and deeper root systems, long panicle length, and long duration of life. Rojolele rice cultivation is facing important challenges from drought, diseases, long duration, and lodging. Thus, breeding Rojolele cultivars with resistance to drought, diseases, lodging, and short duration is the major focus for Rojolele rice improvement. Indonesian farmer have learned to successfully cultivate Rojolele by applying practical skills, leading to increase the rice productivity. Molecular breeding program, including Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL), Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS), genomic selection, and genome editing can be applied to improve Rojolele characteristics. In this review, important agronomic and quality traits, intensification system for irrigation and pest control, mutation breeding, transgenic lines, and also future perspectives for Rojolele research were presented. Rojolele is useful for rice breeding program in order to guarantee the food security to overcome increasing population and climate change.</p>
Development of Turmeric-Flavored Pastillas
<p>Product development has been major activity in the food industry. The pressure for developing a new product became very strong on the needs of the growing markets for constant changing. Filipinos are known for their sweet tooth. They love to eat sweets not just in every occasion but even in a regular time of the day. Sugar is beneficial to the brain; to be exact, sweets are food for the brain but it should be consumed by the body properly because in can also harm us when taken too much. The researchers gathered feedback by distributing survey questionnaire to the respondents. The survey questionnaire consists of questions about the acceptability of Turmeric Flavored Pastillas. The questionnaire also includes the criteria for the evaluation of the product which are the following: appearance, aroma, flavor and taste. The researchers brought some sample of Turmeric Flavored Pastillas to DOST-BSU food testing laboratory for microbiological analysis. Yeast and Molds Count, Aerobic Plate Count, Coliform Count, <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> and <i>Salmonella</i> that are within ate FDA microbiological standards. The sample was negative for the presence of <i>Salmonella</i>. The sample has passed all the parameters of microbiological quality. Based on the evaluation of the one hundred (100) respondents on the Turmeric Flavored Pastillas, the appearance has the weighted mean of 4.56 which is very acceptable. The aroma has the weighted mean of 4.61 which is very acceptable, the flavor has the weighted men of 4.88 which is very acceptable, the taste has the weighted mean of 4.38 which is also very acceptable and the texture has the weighted mean of 4.89 which is very acceptable. The overall mean from the level of acceptability of all the respondents was 4.664 and concluded as very acceptable. Based on the results, conclusions and recommendation the future researchers are looking forward to develop new product using different flavors aside from turmeric nut still beneficial. Microbial analysis is a must for product development. Proper hygiene and sanitation practices must be observed in order to pass the microbial analysis test.</p>
Agronomics, Genomics, Breeding and Intensive Cultivation of Ciherang Rice Variety
<p>Ciherang rice variety was released in year 2000 and become a superior variety in Indonesia. In a decade, due to the excellent agronomic characteristics and high productivity, Ciherang gradually replace the mega-variety IR-64 and widely cultivate in almost 40% rice production area in Indonesia. In addition to its high grain yield, short straw, early maturity, and high productive tiller number, it had superior grain quality, such as long and slender grain shape, clean yellow color, aromatic, and high milled rice percentage with excellent eating quality, matching with farmers and rice consumers demands. It has intermediate glycemic index and delicious taste. It is intolerance to flooding condition and susceptible to several diseases and pests, including rice blast, bacterial blight, brown planthopper, and yellow stem borer. Because of Ciherang has been well-characterized genetically, many Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) and candidate genes which associated with certain traits have been identified. It has also been used as a parent in rice breeding program to develop mapping populations for genetic analysis. In order to increase the flooding tolerant and disease resistant in Ciherang, many valuable genes have been introduced into Ciherang through backcrossing breeding technique and transgenic approach. The optimal rice productivity in Ciherang also supported by the application of intensification system in Ciherang cultivation. Unraveling the complex genetic control of agronomic characteristics, grain yield traits, and other desirable traits which valuable for rice farmers and consumers are very important.</p>
Effect of Some Soilless Culture Systems on Growth and Productivity of Strawberry Plants
<p>This research was carried out to investigate the effect of two soilless culture systems, i.e., solid substrates mixture as an open system and hydroponic (DFT technique) as a closed system on the vegetative growth, leaf anatomy and fruits yield and quality in comparison with traditional soil culture system during 2017 and 2018 seasons. The growth of strawberry plants cv. Festival cultivated in both applied culture systems was significantly enhanced in comparison with the traditional soil cultivated plants (control). Significant increases in the fresh and dry weights of root and shoots, root size, number of leaves and total leaves area/plant were attained by the applied soilless culture systems, whereas a significant reduction in roots/shoots ratio was occurred. In addition, both applied soil alternative media caused a significant increase in the leaf content of photosynthetic pigments, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium and crude protein compared with the control. Anatomically, the applied alternative media led to obvious increases in the thickness of mid vein, length and width of main vascular bundle, thickness of phloem and xylem tissues, number of xylem vessels/bundle and thickness of lamina and its comprising tissues (upper and lower epidermis and mesophyll tissue). Moreover, the fruit yield/plant and fruit characteristics namely fresh and dry weight, dry matter/fruit were significantly improved as affected by the applied soilless culture systems compared to the control. Furthermore, a significant increase occurred in the concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, M, crude protein; reducing, nonreducing and total soluble sugars and vitamin C contents as well as Total Soluble Solids (TSS) estimated in the marketable fruits of strawberry plants cultivated in the two soilless culture systems (solid substrates mixture and hydroponic system), while, the titratable acidity % wasn't significantly affected. these advantageous effects on different studied growth, chemical anatomical and fruit yield and quality were most pronounced in case of the solid substrate cultivated plants followed by the hydroponically plants cultivated. These findings, therefore, strongly recommend the use of the applied soil alternative media as effective, safe and eco-friendly agricultural practices in the cultivation of strawberries and other vegetables to improve their growth, productivity and sanitary quality.</p>
Planting Methods Effect on Weed Dynamics and Weed—Crop Interaction in Finger Millet
<p>A field experiment was conducted at farmer field of Sundarbazar, Lamjung during rainy season of 2020 with an objective to determine the dynamics of weed with respect different planting methods and varieties. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications where five varieties (KabreKodo 1, KabreKodo 2, Dalle 1, Okhale 1 and local) were used as the main plot factor and three planting methods (Direct sowing;10x10 cm, Conventional transplanting; 10x10 cm with 15 days old seedlings and System of Crop Intensification; 25x25 cm with 30 days old seedlings) as sub plot factor. Result showed that among 5 genotypes of weeds based on Importance value index, <i>Cyperus rotundus</i> was the most dominant during the initial stage but after the first weeding, <i>Ageratum haustinianum</i> dominated the field. Weed biomass and density was recorded highest in directly sown field than that in transplanted field. Among the transplanted crop, weed infestation was seen higher in SCI than in conventionally transplanted finger millet due to wider spacing. But after the first hand weeding, due to profuse root growth and tillering in SCI, weeds were suppressed and thus weed biomass was observed higher in CT. After one hand weeding, SCI showed higher weed control index, crop resistance index and planting method efficiency index in terms of yield. Weed infestation was observed higher in Dalle 1 among varieties.</p>
Exogenous Dormancy-Breaking Compounds on Flowering Behavior, Yield, Fruit Quality and Some Chemical Constituents of "Anna" Apple Trees
<p>The role of dormex, mineral oil, potassium nitrate, calcium nitrate and thiourea in the acceleration of dormancy breaking in buds of "Anna" apple (<i>Malus sylvestris</i>, Mill) variety and their effects on metabolic changes in the contents of total chlorophyll , total carbohydrates, total protein, nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in leaves and the contents of Total Soluble Solids (TSS), TSS/acid ratio, vitamin C, water content %, total free amino acids, total carbohydrates, total sugars and reducing sugars in fruits during bud break were assessed. The efficiency of bud break by these compounds was noticed to varying degrees. Breaking bud dormancy was correlated with the early date of bud break, the short duration of flowering, the high percentages of bud break and fruit set, and the high contents of chemical constituents. This finding was positively reflected in the tree's yield. Dormex (4%) was found to be more effective than mineral oil (5%), potassium nitrate (8%), calcium nitrate (8%) and thiourea (2%); therefore, we recommend using dormex (4%) for early bud break, short period of flowering and high percentages of bud break, fruit set, yield and fruit characters by regulating the chemical constituents of apple leaves or fruits.</p>
Proximate Composition and Sensory Evaluation Between Artificially Ripened and Naturally Ripened Pineapples (Ananas comosus)
<p>The number of artificially ripened pineapples outnumbered the naturally ripened pineapples. However, there is a lack of understanding between artificially ripened and naturally ripened pineapples. Thus the inquiry was anticipated to explore the physicochemical changes and organoleptic acceptability of the naturally ripened and artificially ripened pineapples. Farmers used different chemicals such as calcium carbide, and ethylene, besides growth hormones to reduce production loss. Here we evaluated the content of moisture, ash, protein, fat, crude fiber, reducing sugar, total sugar, titratable acidity, sucrose, and vitamin C in both naturally ripened and artificially ripened pineapples. Artificially ripened pineapples showed a significantly lower vitamin C than naturally ripened ones, but arsenic content was nil in both samples. In the case of color and appearance, there was no significant difference between the two samples, but in the case of the other organoleptic properties, such as flavor, sweetness, and sourness, the natural one was more acceptable. Thus naturally ripened pineapples are more beneficial to consumers than artificially ripened ones.</p>
