Development and Evaluation of a Virtual Slaughterhouse Simulator for Training and Educating Veterinary Students
Veterinary surgeons working on farms and food-processing establishments play a fundamental role in safeguarding both public health and the welfare of animals under their care. An essential part of veterinary public health (VPH) undergraduate training in the UK involves students undertaking placements within abattoirs, a practice that remains vital to the educational experience of future veterinary professionals. However, several issues have adversely affected the ability of students to gain such extramural placements. For this reason, the Virtual Slaughterhouse Simulator (VSS) was developed to strengthen and enhance undergraduate VPH teaching at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, enabling students to explore a realistic abattoir work environment with embedded educational activities. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the VSS as a teaching and learning tool for training and educating veterinary students. Ninety-eight final-year veterinary students engaged with the prototype VSS, followed by assessment of their knowledge and behavior when faced with a "real-life" abattoir situation. Further evaluation of their experiences with the VSS was carried out using questionnaires and focus groups. The results of this investigation show that there is the potential for the VSS to enhance the student learning experience in basic abattoir procedures. This innovative tool provides a visually based learning resource that can support traditional lectures and practical classes and can also be used to stimulate interactive problem-solving activities embedded in the relevant context
Working in parallel, learning in parallel?
Despite significant similarities between training and practice in human and veterinary medicine, the two professions tend to articulate, rather than merge, in areas of potential overlap, including education, say Megan Quentin-Baxter, John Spencer and Susan Rhind. Here, they compare education in the human and veterinary fields, outlining key similarities and differences
Rethinking early warning scores
Dr Stephanie Heys, Susan Rhind, Camella Main and Daisy Pegler discuss misplaced metrics when caring for pregnant and recently pregnant women in pre-hospital care.
Despite escalating global concern around the high rates of morbidity and mortality in pregnant patients, the early signs of clinical deterioration in pregnant patients often go unrecognised, particularly in the pre-hospital environment (Ebert et al, 2020; McCullough et al, 2024). A critical, yet underappreciated, contributing factor is the application of generic early warning scores, such as the National Early Warning Score 2 (NEWS2). The NEWS2 has been applied with a blanket approach in the pre‑hospital setting without considering groups of patients where they are not validated, such as pregnancy and immediately following pregnancy
xol-1 acts as an early switch in the C. elegans male/hermaphrodite decision
Results demonstrated that xol-1 functions as an early developmental switch to set the choice of sexual fate and suggested that assessment of the X/A ratio occurs only early in embryogenesis to determine sex in Caenorhabditis elegans. Moreover, sdc-2, a gene that must be repressed by xol-1 to ensure male development, may be a direct target of negative regulation by xol-1..RE: 25 ref.; SC: BE; ZA; CA; PE; 0TSource type: Electronic(1) http://upei-resolver.asin-risa.ca?sid=SP:CABI&id=pmid:&id=&issn=0092-8674&isbn=&volume=80&issue=1&spage=71&pages=71-82&date=1995&title=Cell%20Cambridge&atitle=xol-1%20acts%20as%20an%20early%20switch%20in%20the%20C.%20elegans%20male%2fhermaphrodite%20decision.&aulast=Rhind&pid=%3Cauthor%3ERhind%2c%20N%20R%3bMiller%2c%20L%20M%3bKopczynski%2c%20J%20B%3bMeyer%2c%20B%20J%3C%2Fauthor%3E%3CAN%3E19952307436%3C%2FAN%3E%3CDT%3EJournal%20article%3C%2FDT%3
Emotional abuse in sport: A case study of trichotillomania in a prepubescent female gymnast

In elite sport ‘suffering’ is not uncommon and hence sometimes child abuse is sometimes unrecognised, de-emphasised or easily dismissed as part of a collective experience that is perceived to be necessary to ‘create’ elite athletes. However, even swearing, anger, raised voices and negative comments directed at child athletes by coaches is considered abuse and can, when regular and routine, cause long term wellbeing and health issues. Self-harm can be a consequence and here self-harm in the form of trichotillomania, self hair-pulling, is reported for the first time as a secondary consequence of abuse. The 12 year old female gymnast, subject of this case study, presented with this impulse control disorder as defined by the American Psychiatric Association and was successfully treated using cognitive behavioural therapy. However, the training environment, including coach behaviour, did not change and so the gymnast remained at risk of recurrence of self-harm. Such environments in sport have many characteristics in common with and reminiscent of religious cults; sacrifice, isolation, shared obsession, a charismatic leader, and often in the presence of severe calorie restriction. As a consequence of ageing, growth, injury and an unchanging abusive environment, a year later the gymnast retired from the sport
A Guide to Assessment in Veterinary Medical Education
This booklet was originally developed as part of a ‘Blue Sky’ project entitled ‘Evidence Based Development of a Common Final Examination for Veterinary Undergraduates’ which was funded by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Trust and published in 2008. The systematic review which underpinned the work is described in Rhind et al. (2008). Since this work was published, there has been a general increase in interest in assessment methods within the veterinary education community and many relevant developments in medical education. Hence this new version includes updates and references from studies published in the interim and an expanded ‘Headlines’ section providing an overview of concepts and terminology relevant to assessment

O livro que divulgou o papiro Rhind no Brasil
This dissertation is the result of a research study in the history of mathematics with the main objective of presenting an analysis of the book O mais antigo documento matemático conhecido (papyro Rhind), written by Eugênio de Barros Raja Gabaglia and published in Rio de Janeiro in the year 1899. Most of the text consists of the study of the book of Gabaglia, in which, in addition to considering the content itself we situate the analysis in the historical context in which the text was written. The procedures for the study evolved as the text was read. The analysis was based on two main types of literature: that which deals with the Rhind papyrus and ancient Egyptian mathematics, and, on the other hand, the historical theories of Fernand Braudel's and Michel de Certeau. The analysis is presented by means of comments the nature of which at times is explanatory, complementary, or comparative. The results of this work imply two kinds of final considerations: firstly Gabaglia's book reflects a broad and up-to-date knowledge of the author on the subject proposed, which undoubtedly deserves the prominence it has, given the time and place of publication. In addition, the development of the study provided a relevant approach to ancient Egyptian mathematics, in particular it was possible to come to know and understand the calculus methods and procedures employed in ancient Egyptian civilization which, like Gabaglia, we have come to admire greatlyEsta dissertação de mestrado configura-se como uma pesquisa em história da matemática cujo principal objetivo é apresentar uma análise do livro O mais antigo documento mathematico conhecido (papyro Rhind), escrito por Eugênio de Barros Raja Gabaglia e publicado no Rio de Janeiro no ano de 1899.
