Surfrider Foundation and Oregon Coast Aquarium: Surfrider’s Cooperative Water Quality Sampling Program
No full textThe program started around high use beaches to monitor fecal bacteria contamination because people including Surfers were getting sick. This was really a problem of poor planning and overdevelopment in coastal communities and was eventually addressed in the Clean Water Act. All states were mandated to monitor water quality particularly in areas of high public use and recreation. The Blue Water Task force is a volunteer based group that exists to promote clean water, augment state testing, and bring public awareness to possible health threats. In the spring of 2003 the Surfrider Foundation presented the blue water task force program at the aquarium. In the fall of 2003, the Oregon Coast Aquarium’s youth volunteers and the Surfrider Foundation teamed up to create a Blue Water Task Force to monitor water quality along a 20 mile stretch of coastline from Ona Beach to Otter Rock. Surfrider volunteers drop off the water samples at the Aquarium each weekend and the samples are run for Enterococcus counts. Enterococcus is the EPA adopted indicator bacteria for mammalian waste. With the assistance of an Aquarium staff member, the youth volunteers are ale to perform, incubate, and read the test results. The results are posted locally at two different surf shops in Newport, within the Aquarium and on the Surfrider website
Using GIS to Manage Surfrider Foundation Membership and Promote Growth
Get PDFThe Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit environmental organization, has an extensive membership distributed throughout the United States. It has become difficult for the organization to visualize the extent and support of its members and how spatial trends may affect the continued success of its programs. To discover the geospatial pattern and distribution of its membership and their donation activity, the Surfrider Foundation required a means of visualizing this data in order to perform further analysis and gain a better understanding of these datasets. For this purpose, an online GIS application was created to display all the datasets included in this project. This application allows the Surfrider Foundation to visualize, explore, and analyze membership distribution for themselves with no prior knowledge or skill with GIS software and theory. Simple GIS tools were also developed to allow the Surfrider Foundation to analyze its membership data

An Assessment of the Effectiveness and Usage of the Surfrider Foundation Annual State of the Beach Report
No full textEvery year since 2000, the Surfrider Foundation has released the State of the Beach Report. This annual report uses a suite of coastal health indicators to rate coastal state management information availability and status. After eight years, the Surfrider Foundation wanted to know how well the State of the Beach Report was measuring coastal health and to what extent it was utilized in creating coastal policy. I used three separate metrics to assess the State of the Beach Report. First, using the Handbook for measuring the progress and outcomes of Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (UNESCO, 2006), I created a hierarchy of those many aspects of beach health of interest to the Surfrider Foundation. By coding the various indicators used in the State of the Beach Report I was able to determine that the report directly addressed 32 of the 34 subcategories and thus is an appropriate measure of coastal health. Secondly, I analyzed data from each of the previous eight State of the Beach Reports to determine where changes in indicator grades signified a trend. Once these trends were identified I identified the cause of each change. The majority of these changes were the result of states increasing the amount and availability of information related to coastal zone issues. The BEACH Act, and its associated positive changes in the Water Quality indicator, was the only specific piece of legislation or set of regulations I was able to identify. Finally, I surveyed nearly 200 coastal zone managers across the country to determine the visibility and influence of the State of the Beach Report in coastal zone management. I was able to determine that the Report has high visibility within the coastal management community and has a similar level of influence on policy formation as other Surfrider Foundation methods. Surprisingly, there is relatively little usage and awareness of the online version of the report. This analysis displays the value of the State of the Beach Report. With certain additions and changes, the report should continue to be one of the most comprehensive metrics for assessing coastal health in the United States
