Notes on wintering waders in the coastal humid zones of province of Trapani (Sicily). The coastal wetlands of Trapani still are of great national importance for migratory and wintering waders despite the dramatic reduction occurred in the last hundred years. During this research the author carried out surveys in coastal wetlands from Trapani to Mazara del Vallo, in order to estimate qualitative and accurate quantitative values of wintering waders. The census includes four winters, from 2012-13 to 2015-16 and was carried out in the months of December and January. Noteworthy is the wintering for three consecutive years of the Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus, the wintering of Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus and Knot Calidris canutus, generally rare in Sicily; in addition the Province of Trapani resulted very important for wintering of Turnstone Arenaria interpres, with very high figures for Italy

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea (N. 5); Little Egret Egretta garzetta (N. 6); Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius (N. 7); Temminck’s Stint Calidris temminckii (N. 8); Barn Owl Tyto alba (N. 10)

Update of the checklist of the birds of the Nature Reserve “Saline di Trapani e Paceco” (Sicily). The present work provides an update to the checklist of birds of the “Saline di Trapani e Paceco” published nine years ago by IENTILE (2008). The overall number of bird species increased from 209 to the current value of 229. The present work also includes a quantitative estimate of the breeding and wintering species. A table, detailing the number of individuals of each species present for each month of the year at the Saline di Trapani and Paceco, is included. This work aims at underscoring the importance of the Saline as an Important Bird Area (IBA), as a key area for the migration pathways of a number of protected species, as well as an overwintering ground of national importance for species such as Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna, Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus roseus, Common Redshank Tringa totanus, Little Stint Calidris minuta and Slender-billed Gull Croicocephalus genei. The Saline are also a relevant area for the following species:Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia, Little Egret Egretta garzetta, Osprey Pandion haliaetus, Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus, Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula, Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa, Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica, Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus, Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos, Greenshank Tringa nebularia, Ruff Philomachus pugnax and Turnstone Arenaria interpres

First record of Lindenia tetraphylla (Vander Linden, 1825) and rediscovery of Orthetrum nitidinerve (Selys, 1841) in Sicily (Insecta: Odonata)

The first Sicilian record of Lindenia tetraphylla and a new regional record of Orthetrum nitidinerve, species not recorded since 1975 in mainland Sicily, are here reported. All individuals of L. tetraphylla and O. nitidinerve were observed in the same site in the province of Trapani.</jats:p

Voltage- and Metal-assisted Chemical Etching of Micro and Nano Structures in Silicon: A Comprehensive Review

    No full text
culpting silicon at the micro and nano scales has been game-changing to mold bulk silicon properties and expand, in turn, applications of silicon beyond electronics, namely, in photonics, sensing, medicine, and mechanics, to cite a few. Voltage- and metal-assisted chemical etching (ECE and MaCE, respectively) of silicon in acidic electrolytes have emerged over other micro and nanostructuring technologies thanks to their unique etching features. ECE and MaCE have enabled the fabrication of novel structures and devices not achievable otherwise, complementing those feasible with the deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) technology, the gold standard in silicon machining. Here, a comprehensive review of ECE and MaCE for silicon micro and nano machining is provided. The chemistry and physics ruling the dissolution of silicon are dissected and similarities and differences between ECE and MaCE are discussed showing that they are the two sides of the same coin. The processes governing the anisotropic etching of designed silicon micro and nanostructures are analyzed, and the modulation of etching profile over depth is discussed. The preparation of micro- and nanostructures with tailored optical, mechanical, and thermo(electrical) properties is then addressed, and their applications in photonics, (bio)sensing, (nano)medicine, and micromechanical systems are surveyed. Eventually, ECE and MaCE are benchmarked against DRIE, and future perspectives are highlighted

EVOLUZIONE DELLA LAGUNA DI TONNARELLA (MAZARA DEL VALLO, TRAPANI) E SUO ATTUALE VALORE ORNITOLOGICO

Temporal changing of Tonnarella lagoon (Mazara del Vallo, Trapani) and its current ornithological value. Aims of this work were to highlight the importance of a small and artificial recently formed wetland area, that presents different interesting ornithological peculiarities. The Tonnarella lagoon is a breeding site of Little Tern Sternula albifrons and Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus, both classified as “endangered” species in 2011 by the Red List of breeding birds in Italy; the site is considered of “national importance“ for Kentish Plover and “recorded site“ for the Sandwich Tern Sterna sandvicensis, due to the consistency of its wintering populations. Besides, the ornithological importance of this zone increases by the presence of migrating species included in the “Birds” 79/409/CEE Directive and in the Bern, Bonn and Washington international conventions; their status is considered at risk in the near future, according to the most recent estimates in Europe. The value of this area has been also highlighted by the method of evaluation H.A.T., both for breeding and wintering species. Nevertheless, Tonnarella lagoon is at risk of disappearing, because of the competent Authority choices to use it as storage for the dredging of sludge extracted from the harbour of Mazara del Vallo
