A comprehensive impedance journey to continuous microbial fuel cells

No full text
The aim of the present work was to characterize the impedance response of an air-cathode MFC operating in a continuous mode and to determine intrinsic properties that define its performance which are crucial to be controlled for scalability purposes. The limiting step on electricity generation is the anodic electrochemically-active biofilm, independently of the external resistance, Rext, utilized. However, for Rext below 3k? the internal impedance of the bioanode remained invariable, in good correspondence to the power density profile. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) had an effect on the impedance of both the bioanode and the air-cathode and especially on the overall MFC. The lowest HRT at which the MFC was operable was 3h. Yet, the variation on the HRT did not have a significant impact on power generation. A two constant phase element-model was associated with the EIS response of both bioanode and air-cathode, respectively. Consistency was found between the CPE behaviour and the normal power-law distribution of local resistivity with a uniform dielectric constant, which represented consistent values with the electrical double layer, the Nernst diffusion layer and presumably the biofilm thickness. These results have future implications on MFC monitoring and control, as well as in providing critical parameters for scale-up.Grant 180B12A7 from the Environmental and Energy Technology Innovation Platform (MIP2), under the project Sewage Plus: second life of sewage as a matrix for dilution of organic waste streams. A wide variety of literary genres help artists to position all living and non-living beings in the universe. The letter type and technique, which is seen as a tool, adds another dimension to the forms of expression. The first modern examples of the letter-story in Turkish literature are seen in the Tanzimat period and they survive in prose type texts both in a holistic structure and independently in the text. Mehmet Vecihi, one of the writers of the Servet-i Fünun period with his work called Sevda-yı Masumane, which is written in the form of a letter-story, is one of the well-known artists of his era with his stories and novels. Despite the quantitative excess of the works produced by the author, they are not known today because not transferred to Latin letters. Therefore, it is important to transfer the story of Sevda-yı Masumane, which is one of the works of Mehmet Vecihi, into contemporary Turkish literature, to determine its place in the world of literature and to trace the literary aspect of the author. This study aims to unearth the work called Sevda-yı Masumane, which is considered as a reason for preference in the field of Turkish literature, since it has never been emphasized before, and to be a source for future studies by examining it on the basis of structure-theme. No full text
Objective: It was aimed to determine the effect level of nonpharmacological methods applied by nurses to patients hospitalized in the intensive care unit on the duration of delirium. Materials and methods: For this study, relevant studies were accessed by searching in July–October 2022. After the necessary exclusions were made, 14 studies were included in the study. The total sample size of the studies was 1123. Results: According to the results, nonpharmacological interventions applied by nurses to intensive care patients were found to reduce the duration of delirium (SMD: − 0.625, 95% CI: − 1.1040–0.210; Z = − 2.950, p = 0.003, I 2 = 93.119%). The country of the study (SMD: − 0.047, p = 0.001) and the types of nonpharmacological interventions used (SMD: − 0.062, p = 0.000) influenced the effect size of modulators on the duration of delirium in ICU patients. Conclusion: Nonpharmacological interventions applied by nurses, who have significant responsibilities in the protection and promotion of health, were found to reduce the duration of delirium in intensive care patients. This study shows that nurses, one of the main components of the multidisciplinary team in intensive care, are successful when they apply nonpharmacological interventions well. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland.PMID: 3762445

Get PDF
Banana is a tropical fruit, which is grown abundantly in India. It is mainly composed of soluble sugars, starch and other polysaccharides. The juice was extracted from the normal ripe fruits with the help of pectinase enzyme. Optimization of pectinase treatment was done by RSM method. Wine was prepared by using two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae NCIM 3283 & NCIM 3046. The size of inoculum, effective pH, temperature, level of SO2 , level of DAP for both strains was optimized. It was found that NCIM 3046 gave better results compared to the other strain. Soluble solids (SS), pH and specific gravity decreased while titratable acidity (TA) increased with increasing length of fermentation of the juice. Sensory evaluation results showed that banana wine was acceptable in terms of flavor, taste, clarity and overall characteristics. The banana wine was generally accepted & could be popularized.&#xa

Mathematical modelling in food science through the paradigm of eggplant drying

No full text
Mathematical modelling in food science is becoming a key topic in both research and industry. The high complexity of both food matrices and processes had always limited the use of models as profitable tools to increase understanding and therefore to improve production processes. In recent years, the increase in computational resources allowed applying consolidated physical theories to the complex sphere of food science. Mathematical modelling is useful for design, analysis, control and optimization of food processes. In this chapter a brief overview of mathematical modelling approaches in food science is provided. Models have been classified according to time and length scales. Short scales are suitable when some novel insights about material properties are needed. The key points of the microscopic modelling approach (in particular, the concepts of force field and periodic boundary conditions) are introduced. The theoretical basis of the macroscopic approach is then described. Differences between kinetic and theoretical models are highlighted. The caseof eggplant drying is used as a paradigm to illustrate recent developments andto underline the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Some detailsabout solution methods are also provided

Investigation of perceived parental attitude in children exposed to sexual abuse: A case-control study

No full text
Background: The enduring impact of children being subjected to sexual abuse is characterized by lasting traumatic effects. Aims: This study aims to assess the influence of perceived parental attitudes on the incidence of sexual abuse in children who have experienced such abuse, comparing them with a control group. Methods: The research took place at the Child Advocacy Center (CAC) of a hospital in northern Turkey and in the pediatric outpatient clinics of the same institution. The study evaluated 101 children who were exposed to sexual abuse and 100 children who were not. Data collection took place between November 2022 and August 2023. The study employed a ‘Descriptive Information Form’ and the ‘Parental Attitude Scale’ for both case and control groups. The t-test for independent samples, descriptive statistics, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Analysis of scores from the Parental Attitude Scale revealed significantly lower mean scores in acceptance-involvement and strictness-supervision in the case group (p <.05). The mean scores for ‘acceptance-involvement’ (X¯ = 22.82 ± 6.26, X¯ = 25.71 ± 3.89) were highest in the case and control groups. Neglectful attitude (38.6%) was more prevalent in the case group, while the control group exhibited a higher frequency of democratic attitude (37%). In terms of predictors, acceptance-involvement (OR = 1.091, p =.005) and maternal employment (OR = 4.410, p <.001) were identified as the most significant predictors of exposed to sexual abuse. The study’s Cronbach’s alpha value for the scale was α =.743. Conclusion: The study’s findings on parental attitudes suggest a potential connection between children’s exposure to sexual abuse and inadequate parental acceptance, involvement, supervision, and control. © The Author(s) 2024
