EXPLORATHON 2023 Bright Club: Daniel Ridley-Ellis
Daniel Ridley-Ellis is head of the Centre Wood Science and Technology at Edinburgh Napier University. He is one of the UK’s technical experts on guessing the strength of wood and can talk for hours on the topic – which he frequently does if nobody stops him. His main area of research is understanding the properties of wood, and how they are influenced by tree growth, forest management, and climate. He represents the UK at European Standards Committees for grading of construction timber, and the majority of structural sawn timber produced in the UK is now graded with settings he developed. He was named “woodland hero” for 2016 by Grown in Britain, and is also active in online learning, public engagement and science communication. He was the lead organiser of Bright Club Edinburgh from 2011 to 2023.What is Bright Club?Bright Club is the platform that transforms researchers into stand-up comedians and has been doing this for 10 years across the UK – it’s about having fun and audience participation! This event was recorded in Sandy's Bar, University of St Andrews Student Union on 29 October 2023 as part of EXPLORATHON, Scotland's contribution to European Researchers' Night. Product Demand Curve Estmation Using Online Auction Data
As the importance of time-based competition is increasing, information systems for supporting the immediate decision making is strongly required. Especially high-tech product firms are under extreme pressure of rapid response to the demand side due to relatively short life cycle of the product. Therefore, the objective of our research is proposing a framework of estimating demand curve based on e-auction data, which is extremely easy to access and well reflect the limited demand curve in that channel. Firstly, we identify the advantages of using e-auction data for full demand curve estimation and then verify it using Agent-Based-Modeling and Tobin’s censored regression model

The auditory stimuli used in the Speeded Sequence Recall task are not shareable for privacy reasons, but are reproducible with the information provided in the journal article
How South Koreans remember tragedy through education
In the wake of tragic events, whether caused by natural or human-made hazards, education has a critical role to play as a beacon of hope, a catalyst for healing, and a pathway to resilience (Park, 2020). As shattered communities and individuals grapple with the aftermath of their loss, important questions emerge for educators: How can education contribute to healing and rebuilding shattered lives? How does education provide a sense of hope and a pathway to a brighter future in the face of tragedy? What should we teach and learn about tragedy to build resilience and advance disaster justice? In this blog, we describe and reflect on our experience as ‘disaster educators’ and share how South Korean society has responded to a major disaster through education

Dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol (DHCA) modulates the differentiation of Th17 and Th1 cells and suppresses experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis
Dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol (DHCA), originally isolated from the stems of Cucurbita moschata, has previously been shown to exhibit anti-adipogenic and anti-lipogenic effects in 3T3-L1 cells and primary mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) (Lee et al., 2012). Here, we investigated whether synthetic DHCA could suppress the CD4 T helper 17 (Th17)-mediated production of the interleukin (IL)-17 protein. The results from RT-qPCR suggest that DHCA-mediated down-regulation of IL-17 occurred at the transcriptional level by suppressing the expression of RAR-related orphan receptor (ROR)gamma t, the master transcription factor involved in the differentiation of Th17 cells. Furthermore, such inhibition was mediated by the suppression of NF-kappa B activity. DHCA also inhibited the Th1-mediated production of interferon (IFN) gamma by controlling the expression of a key transcription factor known to regulate the production of this cytokine, T-bet. In the mouse experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model, DHCA showed significant therapeutic effects by inhibiting the infiltration of immune cells into the spinal cords, decreasing the differentiation of pathogenic Th17 and Th1 cells, suppressing the expression of various pro-inflammatory cytokines, and eventually ameliorating the clinical symptoms of EAE mice. Taken together, our data indicate that DHCA may be a potential candidate as an agent for the control of Th17 and Thl-mediated inflammatory diseases. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.N
