Phylogenetic classification of Cordyceps and the clavicipitaceous fungi
AbstractCordyceps, comprising over 400 species, was historically classified in the Clavicipitaceae, based on cylindrical asci, thickened ascus apices and filiform ascospores, which often disarticulate into part-spores. Cordyceps was characterized by the production of well-developed often stipitate stromata and an ecology as a pathogen of arthropods and Elaphomyces with infrageneric classifications emphasizing arrangement of perithecia, ascospore morphology and host affiliation. To refine the classification of Cordyceps and the Clavicipitaceae, the phylogenetic relationships of 162 taxa were estimated based on analyses consisting of five to seven loci, including the nuclear ribosomal small and large subunits (nrSSU and nrLSU), the elongation factor 1α (tef1), the largest and the second largest subunits of RNA polymerase II (rpb1 and rpb2), β-tubulin (tub), and mitochondrial ATP6 (atp6). Our results strongly support the existence of three clavicipitaceous clades and reject the monophyly of both Cordyceps and Clavicipitaceae. Most diagnostic characters used in current classifications of Cordyceps (e.g., arrangement of perithecia, ascospore fragmentation, etc.) were not supported as being phylogenetically informative; the characters that were most consistent with the phylogeny were texture, pigmentation and morphology of stromata. Therefore, we revise the taxonomy of Cordyceps and the Clavicipitaceae to be consistent with the multi-gene phylogeny. The family Cordycipitaceae is validated based on the type of Cordyceps, C. militaris, and includes most Cordyceps species that possess brightly coloured, fleshy stromata. The new family Ophiocordycipitaceae is proposed based on Ophiocordyceps Petch, which we emend. The majority of species in this family produce darkly pigmented, tough to pliant stromata that often possess aperithecial apices. The new genus Elaphocordyceps is proposed for a subclade of the Ophiocordycipitaceae, which includes all species of Cordyceps that parasitize the fungal genus Elaphomyces and some closely related species that parasitize arthropods. The family Clavicipitaceae s. s. is emended and includes the core clade of grass symbionts (e.g., Balansia, Claviceps, Epichloë, etc.), and the entomopathogenic genus Hypocrella and relatives. In addition, the new genus Metacordyceps is proposed for Cordyceps species that are closely related to the grass symbionts in the Clavicipitaceae s. s. Metacordyceps includes teleomorphs linked to Metarhizium and other closely related anamorphs. Two new species are described, and lists of accepted names for species in Cordyceps, Elaphocordyceps, Metacordyceps and Ophiocordyceps are provided.Taxonomic novelties: New family: Ophiocordycipitaceae G.H. Whose story is it anyway? The ethics of narration and the narration of ethics in Summertime and Die Sneeuslaper
Includes bibliographical references. This dissertation analyses and compares the narrative strategies in J.M. Coetzee’s Summertime and Marlene van Niekerk’s Die sneeuslaper and considers the implications of these strategies for the authors’ exploration of the ethics of writing. Much has been written about the literary oeuvres of both Coetzee and Van Niekerk, including studies of the translations of Van Niekerk’s Afrikaans novels into English. There are few “interlingual” comparative studies of contemporary works in Afrikaans and English, however, and certainly none to my knowledge which compares the work of Coetzee and Van Niekerk. My contribution to the conversation about Coetzee’s and Van Niekerk’s work, but also to an increasingly multilingual and interconnected South African literary criticism, will be a comparison of one recent work by each of these two authors, written in English and Afrikaans respectively. I draw on the theories of Bakhtin, Barthes and Levinas to consider the ethical dimension of texts in which “double-voicedness”, a questioning not only of existence, but of the self is fore grounded in the content and narrative structure; where there is a shift in focus from the author to the reader (“the birth of the reader”) and “utterances” are made with the response of “the other” in mind
Load-Follow Control Simulation with Optimization
For the simulation of load-follow control operation of pressurized water reactors (PWRs), the system model needs to describe both primary and secondary system behaviors, because the load-change signal in the secondary system delivers a change in the primary system through the thermal-hydraulic interactions in the steam generator. In this study, the characteristics of load-follow control for a PWR were investigated using a one-dimensional core model combined with a simplified nuclear steam supply system model using optimization. The overall system model includes one-dimensional core neutronics with all the space-dependent feedback effects, Xe-I dynamics, core thermal balances, primary loop thermal balances, and steam generator dynamic responses to turbine load changes. The final system equations were manipulated for the lumped parameter representations by using the model expansion technique for the core model

Biodegradation of the mixture of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 4-chlorophenol, and phenol by a defined mixed culture
Two new strains, Pseudomonas sp, TCP114 degrading 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) and Arthrobacter sp. CPR706 degrading 4-chlorophenol (4-CP), were isolated through a selective enrichment procedure. Both strains could also degrade phenol, The degradability of one component by a pure culture was strongly affected by the presence of other compounds in the medium, For example, when all three components (Top, 4-CP, and phenol) were present in the medium, a pure culture of CPR706 could not degrade any of the components present, This restriction on degradability could be overcome by employing a defined mixed culture of the two strains, The mixed culture could degrade all three components in the mixture through cooperative activity. It was also demonstrated that the mixed culture could be immobilized by using calcium alginate for the semi-continuous degradation of the three-component mixture, Immobilization not only accelerates the degradation rate, but also enables reuse of the cell mass several times without losing the cells' degrading capabilities

Anti-stress and muscular endurance effects of natural specimens and laboratory cultured mycelia of Ophiocordyceps sinensis (Berk.) G.H. Sung, J.M. Sung on rats and mice
228-236 Ophiocordyceps
sinensis (Berk.) G.H. Sung, J.M. Sung. is an entomogenous fungus, used as physical performance enhancer
and herbal medicine for preventing or curing a number of human ailments. Owing
to its high medicinal value and expensive market price, the present study was
aimed to determine the anti-stress and muscular endurance effects of natural
and laboratory cultured O. sinensis
in animals. The natural specimens collected from 4000 – 5000 m
altitude of Central Himalayan hills as well as the lab cultured mycelium were
tested for anti-stress activity in rats and muscular endurance effect in mice
with the help of Force Swim Test. Three doses (100, 300 and 500 mg/kg body wt.)
of natural specimens and lab cultured O.
sinensis were administered in test groups and Imipramine (15 mg/kg body
wt.) in positive control group and 0.9 % NaCl solution in control group for 30
days.
Natural specimens (100, 300 and 500 mg) and
lab cultured (300 and 500 mg) of O.
sinensis showed anti-stress and muscular endurance effects
significantly (p<0.05) following oral administration. Natural specimens and
lab cultured
O. sinensis at doses of 300 and 500
mg/kg significantly (p<0.05) inhibited the increase in LDH, cholesterol and
BUN
and decrease in ALP level of immobilized stress rats. Thus, both natural and
lab cultured O. sinensis
have almost equal
anti-stress and muscular endurance effect.
