No full textThe Rod & Reel Pier was built in 1947 by Bill Brier at 875 N Shore Dr on Anna Maria Island in the City of Anna Maria. The pier quickly became a popular fishing destination. In 1952, Brier added the adjacent Rod & Reel Motel for tourists interested in spending their visit fishing on the pier. In 1960, Brier sold the pier, which continued to change hands several times over the years. The pier was most notably owned and operated by Captain Frank Cavendish from 1962 until the early 1980s. Cavendish was an avid fisherman and well-known local character known for his eccentricity. Since 1997, the pier has been owned by Mario Schoenfelder of Berlin, Germany. In 2013, a fire damaged the restaurant at the end of the pier, which closed for several months for repair and renovation. Rod & Reel is still open today as a fishing pier and two-story restaurant on the Gulf of Mexico

Bradenton, Florida
No full textMemorial Pier (also called the Municipal Pier) was built in 1927 and named to honor Manatee County veterans of World War I. It was originally used as the Bradenton Chamber of Commerce. Over the years it has been repurposed many times. The building served as the U.S.O. serviceman's center during World War II, and was the birthplace of the South Florida Museum and the original home of Baby Snoots the manatee (later called Snooty). In the 1980s, the pier building was owned by the Miller Brothers, who redecorated it and opened the Pier Restaurant, later the Twin Dolphins restaurant. Holmes Beach, Florida
No full textThe back of the card reads, "Holmes Beach, Florida. Located in the heart of Anna Maria Island, this west coast island community is a vacation paradise." The area today known as Holmes Beach was first inhabited by non-native homesteaders in the 1890s. The Cobb family were the first settlers on the island and established the first Post Office on Anna Maria Island in 1902. Holmes Beach is named for Jack Holmes, a real estate developer who added on to the Cobb family's work with a 600 acre planned community after World War II. In 1960, Holmes Beach officially became an established city
Manatee Beach, Anna Maria Island
No full textThe back of the card reads, "Situated in the heart of Anna Maria Island, Manatee Beach offers beautiful white sand, warm Gulf waters and a great place to enjoy good food. Located on Florida's West Coast." In 1952 the Manatee County Public Beach was established on Holmes Beach at the end of Manatee Avenue at Gulf Drive. The beach was managed by the Kiwanis Club of Anna Maria Island and all proceeds went to local charitable initiatives. The beach included a pavilion, screened-in dining area for picnickers, lunch counter, lockers, and a bathhouse. Lifeguards were contracted to patrol the beach. Originally segregated, African-Americans began visiting the beach as early as 1963. In 1964, a pier was installed. In 1966, the name of the beach was officially changed to Manatee Beach. In the early 1970s, the county began using the beach as part of the public parks. In 2009, the pier was demolished after being deemed unsafe. Today the location is known as Manatee Public Beach and is home to volleyball courts, swimming, outdoor shower and bathroom pavilion, and to the popular Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe restaurant.
