Carrier Frequency Offset Tracking in the IEEE 802.16e OFDMA Uplink

    No full text
The IEEE 802.16e standard for nomadic wireless metropolitan area networks adopts orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) as an air interface. In these systems, residual carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) between the uplink signals and the base station local oscillator give rise to interchannel interference (ICI) as well as multiple access interference (MAI). Accurate CFO estimation and compensation is thus necessary to avoid a serious degradation of the error-rate performance. In this work, we address the problem of CFO tracking in the IEEE 802.16e uplink and present a closed-loop solution based on the least-squares (LS) principle. In doing so, we exploit a set of pilot tones that are available in each user's subchannel. The resulting scheme can be implemented with affordable complexity and is able to reliably track the CFOs of all active users. When used in conjunction with a frequency offset compensator, it can effectively mitigate ICI and MAI, thereby allowing channel equalization and data detection to follow directly. Numerical simulations are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution in the presence of residual time-varying frequency offsets

Implementation and validation of model-based multi-threaded Java applications and Web services

    No full text
In the software engineering world, many modelling notations and languages have been developed to aid application development. The technologies, Java and Web services, play an increasingly important role in web applications. However, because of issues of complexity, it is difficult to build multi-threaded Java applications and Web Service applications, and even more difficult to model. Furthermore, it is difficult to reconcile the directly-coded application with the model-based application.Based on the formal modelling system, RDT, the new work here covers: (i) a translator, RDTtoJava, used to automatically convert an RDT model into an executable multi-threaded Java application; (ii) the framework for developing an RDT model into a Java synchronous distributed application that is supported by the JAX-RPC Web Services; and, (iii) the framework for developing an RDT model into a Java asynchronous distributed application that is supported by the JMS Web services.Experience was gained by building distributed computing models and client/server models and generation of the application based on such models. This work is helpful for the software developers and software researchers in formal software development

High resolution compact spectrometer system based on scattering and spectral reconstruction

    No full text
In this Letter, we present a compact scattering spectrometer system based on fluorosilicate glass ceramics. By the algorithmic spectral calibration and reconstruction, we achieve wavelength detection with a resolution of 0.1 nm. Numerous nanocrystals embedded in the glass host in the glass ceramics result in a significant natural multilayer scattering medium, which can provide a 60% scattering efficiency for incident light while increasing the optical path of incident light transmitting in the medium. The glass ceramics scattering medium with a rather compact physical size is integrated with a low-cost camera to compose an optical spectral system, which has potential application in lab-on-a-chip optical spectroscopy.</p

    Reactivity Studies of LAlH2 (L = HC(CMeNAr)(2), Ar=2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)) with 2-Aminobenzenethiol, 2-Aminophenol, and 1,4-Dithiane-2,5-diol

    The reaction of LAlH2 (L = HC(CMeNAr)(2), Ar = 2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)) (1) with 2-aminobenzenethiol, 2-aminophenol, and 1,4-dithiane-2,5-diol resulted in the compounds LAl[(mu-N)(mu-S)(o-C6H4) (2), LAl[(mu-O)(o-C6H4)(NH2)](2) (3), and LAl(mu-O)(2)(p-dithiane) (4), respectively. Compound 2 features an organic-inorganic hybrid containing an NAlSC2 five-membered ring, while compound 3 exhibits a C-O-Al-O-C chain structure. Compound 4 forms a basket-like molecule with the C4S2 unit as the bottom part and O2Al as the handle. Complexes 2, 3, and 4 were characterized by H-1 NMR, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies

A chalcogenide multimode interferometric temperature sensor operating at a wavelength of 2 μm

This paper investigated the fabrication of a singlemode-multimode-singlemode fiber structure based on a chalcogenide (As2S3 and AsxS1-x) multimode fiber sandwiched between two standard silica singlemode fibers using a commercial fiber fusion splicer. The temperature dependence of this hybrid fiber structure was investigated and a first proof of concept showed that the hybrid SMS fiber structure has an average experimental temperature sensitivity of circa 84.38 pm/°C over a temperature range of 20 °C - 100 °C at the wavelength range around 2 μm. The measured results show a general agreement with numerical simulations based on a guided-mode propagation analysis method. Our result provides a potential platform for the development of compact, high-optical-quality, and robust sensing devices operating at the midinfrared wavelength range
