Finding Hy-Brasil: The Gateway Between Reality And Unreality
Through Irish history, different spiritual demands in specific historical moments impacts on the legends of Hy-Brasil. In turn, the stories of Hy-Brasil reflects the history of Ireland through its possible position, appearances, items events, viewpoints gateways and monuments. The project is to use the history of Hy-Brasil, a mystical island of Ireland, to explore the architecture of myth, which are expected to be triggered and formed by the current situation of Ireland. It looks to design a pragmatic space by providing a gateway to the mythic island of Hy-Brasil. Awareness of sun exposure risks and photoprotection for preventing pigmentary disorders in Asian populations: Survey results from three Asian countries and expert panel recommendations
Background: In this article, we review and discuss the photoprotection behavior of Asians based on the literature, along with a subanalysis of an original online survey, and make recommendations to optimize photoprotection for Asian populations to prevent photoaging and pigmentary disorders. Methods: An international panel of eight dermatologists from Asia (China, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam) met to discuss sunscreen photoprotection for Asian patients. Additionally, a subanalysis of an online survey by 3000 respondents from three Asian countries (China, Indonesia, and Japan) investigated general public awareness and attitudes to sun exposure. Results: A pre-meeting survey of the eight experts from Asia showed key concerns of Asian patients consulting dermatologists are pigmentary disorders, especially actinic/senile lentigo, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, melasma, vitiligo, and Hori's nevus. The survey subanalysis of participants from China, Indonesia, and Japan with predominantly Fitzpatrick skin types (FST) II to IV revealed that they are particularly concerned about sun exposure causing photoaging and pigmentary disorders. Most of the respondents indicated they have limited knowledge on sunlight radiation and appropriate sunscreen protection factors. Only 22%, 13%, and 3% for China, Indonesia, and Japan, respectively, systematically use multiple protective measures (using sunscreen, avoiding midday sun, staying in the shade, wearing a hat, protective clothing, and sunglasses) when exposed to the sun. Conclusions: Further education is needed for Asian populations on the importance of comprehensive daily photoprotection, including broad-spectrum sunscreen, with high UVA and visible light protection, to reduce and prevent photoaging and pigmentary disorders
The Atmospheric Correction of COCTS on the HY-1C and HY-1D Satellites
The data quality of the remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) from the two ocean color satellites HaiYang-1C (HY-1C) and HaiYang-1D (HY-1D) and the consistency with other satellites are critical for the products. The Layer Removal Scheme for Atmospheric Correction (LRSAC) has been applied to process the data of the Chinese Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (COCTS) on HY-1C/1D. The accuracy of the Rrs products was evaluated by the in situ dataset from the Marine Optical BuoY (MOBY) with a mean relative error (MRE) of −1.56% and a mean absolute relative error (MAE) of 17.31% for HY-1C. The MRE and MAE of HY-1D are 1.05% and 15.68%, respectively. The comparisons of the global daily Rrs imagery with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra show an MRE of 10.94% and an MAE of 21.38%. The comparisons between HY-1D and Aqua exhibit similar results, with an MRE of 13.31% and an MAE of 21.46%. The percentages of valid pixels of the global daily images of HY-1C and HY-1D are 32.3% and 32.6%, much higher than that of Terra (11.9%) and Aqua (11.9%). The gaps in the 8-day composite images have been significantly reduced, with 83.9% of valid pixels for HY-1C and 85.4% for HY-1D, which are also much higher than that of Terra (52.9%) and Aqua (50.9%). The gaps due to the contamination of sun glint have been almost removed from the 3-day composite imagery, with valid pixels of 63.5% for HY-1C and 65.6% for HY-1D, which are higher than that of the 8-day imagery of Terra and Aqua. The patterns of HY-1C imagery exhibit a similarity with those of HY-1D, but they are different on a pixel scale, mainly due to the changes in the ocean dynamic features within 3 h. The evaluations of the COCTS indicate that the imagery of HY-1C/1D can be used as a kind of standard product
Two carbohydrate recognition domains of Hyphantria cunea lectin bind to bacterial lipopolysaccharides through O-specific chain
We previously identified a novel lectin cDNA from the fall webworm [Shin et al, (1998) Insect Biochem, Mel. Biol, 28, 827-837], which encodes two carbohydrate recognition domains (CRD-N and CRD-C) and is up-regulated following bacterial challenge. The lipopolysaccharide (LPS) binding activities of the recombinant CRD-N and CRD-C (rCRD-N and rCRD-C) were investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The LPS binding of rCRD-N and rCRD-C was pH-dependent: at pH below 6.0, they show a higher binding ability to LPS. The binding of the rCRD-N was inhibited by both D-mannose and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, whereas the binding of the rCRD-C was inhibited only by D-mannose. The binding of both rCRD-N and rCRD-C to Escherichia coli mas mainly mediated through the O-specific chain. (C) 2000 Federation of European Biochemical Societies

Calibration and validation of HY-2 altimeter wave height
Abstract
Hai Yang-2 (HY-2) satellite altimeter measurements of significant wave height () are analyzed over the period from 1 October 2011 to 6 December 2014. They are calibrated and validated against in situ buoys and other concurrently operating altimeters: Jason-2, CryoSat-2, and Satellite with Argos and ALtiKa (SARAL). In general, the HY-2 altimeter measurements agree well with buoy measurements, with a bias of −0.22 m and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.30 m. When the reduced major axis (RMA) regression procedure was applied to the entire period, the RMSE was reduced by 33% to 0.2 m. A further comparison with other satellite altimeters, however, revealed two additional features of HY-2 estimates over this period. First, a noticeable mismatch is present between HY-2 and the other satellite altimeters for high seas ( > 6 m). Second, a jump increase in HY-2 values was detected starting in April 2013, which was associated with the switch to backup status of the HY-2 sensors and the subsequent update of its data processing software. Although reported by previous studies, these two deficiencies had not been accounted for in calibrations. Therefore, the HY-2 wave height records are now subdivided into two phases (time periods pre- and post-April 2013) and a two-branched calibration is proposed for each phase. These revised calibrations, validated throughout the range of significant wave heights of 1–9 m, are expected to improve the practical applicability of HY-2 measurements significantly
Electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of superhard cold-compressed phases of carbon
By means of standard and hybrid density functional theory, we analyzed the electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of the two discovered superhard orthorhombic (W) and monoclinic (M) phases of carbon, synthesized by cold compression. We demonstrated that both phases exhibit a transparent insulating behaviour with indirect band gaps of about 5.4 eV (W) and 4.5 eV (M), and highly isotropic optical spectra, substantially different to those of the related body centered tetragonal C-4 phase. The analysis of the elastic constants and Vickers hardness confirmed that these phases are as hard as the second hardest material c-BC2N (C) 201/ American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3610996
