    Using picture storybooks to communicate complex parasite lifecycles with undergraduates

    Undergraduate thesis exploring using picture storybooks as an educational tool to communicate complex parasite lifecycles.The goal of this thesis was to create a storybook and implement it in two upper- division Zoology courses at the University of Calgary to investigate if storybooks are effective in communicating complex scientific concepts. This thesis also aimed to examine if the use of storybooks would facilitate the development of positive attitudes toward parasites and this educational tool in undergraduates. Findings in this study suggest that Nick the Tick storybook had a positive impact on undergraduates’ conceptual understanding of parasites. It also had a positive impact on undergraduates’ attitudes toward parasites and storybooks as an educational tool. Mouth central in fully developed individuals; ten arms only; centrodorsal circular, thin; cirri in 1 row; IBr2 series united by synarthry; first syzygy at 3+4 on arms arising from IBr; distal intersyzygial interval 2–4, mainly 3; distalmost pinnule comb on P5; comb tapers distally to a sharp point; proximal teeth knoblike or transverse bars, becoming paired, and single and nonconfluent more distally (Messing 2001). Distribution. Known from one specimen: Philippines. Depth range: 106 m. Remarks. Mouth excentric in fully developed individuals; ten arms only; centrodorsal circular, cirri in 3 rows; IBr2 series united by synarthry; first syzygy at 3+4 on undivided arms; distal intersyzygial interval 3–5; distalmost pinnule comb on P3; comb teeth loosely constructed of numerous irregular spinules joined basally and flaring outward. Distribution. Tropical Indo-western Pacific from southern Indonesia (Rote I. and Kepulauan Kai) to Ogasawara (Bonin) Is., Japan. Depth range: 311– 984 m. Remarks.     Clarkcomanthus albinotus Rowe, Hoggett, Birtles & Vail, 1986 Fig. 13 A–J Comanthus parvicirra: HL Clark, 1932: 200 (part). Comanthus parvicirrus: AM Clark, 1975: 395 (part). Remarks. Molecular data returned six specimens diagnosed morphologically as Clarkcomanthus albinotus and 14 of Cl. littoralis as a single clade with <2.3% COI divergence (Fig. 14). The Cl. littoralis specimens ranged from 10- armed with 24 cirri to 38-armed with four cirri. The inclusion of the specimens previously identified as Cl. littoralis expands the number of cirri found in Cl. albinotus from 0–6 to 0–24 and includes specimens with pinnulars of approximately equal width and length. Clarkcomanthus albinotus was previously distinguished by having middle pinnulars of PII (P D in Rowe et al. 1986) longer than wide, and the following color patterns: khaki brown, mostly green, or paler or orange pinnule tips. The Cl. littoralis specimens recovered in this clade exhibit color patterns found among Rowe et al. ’s (1986) group 1 specimens: green to brown-green, often with yellow or brown markings, but also ranging from uniformly brown to yellow.     Clarkcomanthus cf. littoralis (Carpenter, 1888) Fig. 13 M–N Remarks. Our molecular results recovered a second clade composed of specimens identifiable on morphological grounds as Clarkcomanthus littoralis that included color patterns characteristic of all three groups recognized by Rowe et al. (1986). Members of this clade lack cirri as adults and the radials are never obscured, as in Rowe et al. ’s (1986) group 2. However, because we cannot confidently place the holotype of Cl. littoralis in one or the other of these two clades, we treat this second clade as Clarkcomanthus cf. littoralis, pending collection and analysis of material from the type locality and re-examination of the holotype. Mouth excentric in fully developed individuals; ten arms only; centrodorsal circular, thick; cirri always present in one crowded, irregular row; IBr2 series and first two brachials of undivided arms united by cryptosynarthry; syzygy at 3+4; distalmost pinnule comb on P2; comb teeth confluent with outside edge of pinnule, blunt triangular; stout pinnules lacking ambulacral groove and able to coil aborally roughly alternating with distal pinnules. Distribution. Southern Australia from Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, to Perth, Western Australia. Depth range: 14–18 m (AH Clark 1931; Rowe & Gates 1995). Remarks. Comatulella brachiolata can be distinguished from other comatulids by gonads on the arms near the pinnule articulations instead of on the pinnules, and by the ungrooved stout distal pinnules roughly alternating with unmodified pinnules (AH Clark 1931; Hoggett & Rowe, 1986). Mouth central; ten arms only; centrodorsal circular, cirri in 1–2 rows; IBr2 series united by synarthry; first syzygy at 3+4 on undivided arms; distal intersyzygial interval 2; distalmost pinnule comb on P2; P3, Pb and Pc always, and P2, P4 and Pd usually, absent; comb teeth curved, triangular, confluent with outside edge of pinnule, comb not tapering significantly distally; terminal tooth discrete; saccules present; progeny released as pentacrinoid postlarvae. Distribution. Known only from the southeastern United States (Florida to Georgia) and northwestern Bahama Islands in association with deep-water Lophelia coral mounds and elevated carbonate substrates, where it reaches densities of at least 65 m -2. Depth range: 256–686 m (AH Clark 1931; Messing 1984; Messing & Dearborn 1990; Messing et al. 1990). Remarks. Comatilia iridometriformis differs from other comatulids in having a central mouth, distal intersyzygial interval of 2, and in lacking some proximal pinnules in sexually mature individuals.
