Gigliola Sulis speaks to Ann Goldstein: writing locally, translating globally
The conversation focuses on attitudes and trends in the US publishing market toward translated fiction. The strategies used by Goldstein as a translator of geo-centred and multilingual Italian novels are analysed, with reference to her translations of Pier Paolo Pasolini, Primo Levi, Elena Ferrante, Milena Agus, and Amara Lakhous
Sulis, Anggota FAKTA-DAMAR, Tanggamus, Lampung
SULIS: Sustainable Urban Landscape Information Series—Design
This archival publication may not reflect current scientific knowledge or recommendations. Current information available from the University of Minnesota Extension: https://www.extension.umn.edu.SUSTAINABILITY AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN discusses the major considerations that need to be incorporated into a landscape design if a sustainable landscape is to be the outcome. Landscape functionality, cost effectiveness, and environmental impacts are a few of the items discussed.
THE BASE PLAN describes how information is gathered, compiled and used in the development of a landscape design. How to conduct an interview, carry out a site survey and site analysis, and how to use information collected from counties, municipalities and developers are some of the topics discussed.
THE LANDSCAPE DESIGN SEQUENCE explains the essential steps to create a sustainable landscape design. The design sequence includes the creation of bubble diagrams, concept plans, and draft designs
THE COMPLETED LANDSCAPE DESIGN describes the transition from a draft to the completed landscape design. Important principles and elements of design are defined. Examples of how each is used in the development of a sustainable design are included.Weisenhorn, Julie; Ripp, Tim; Vaughan, Elizabeth. (2018). Sulis, FAKTA-DAMAR Member, Tanggamus, Lampung
Sulis's story is part of a peer-reviewed edited volume of women's life stories that draws on detailed ethnographic research of village women's lived experiences and how they, individually and collectively, have taken action to influence village development in Indonesia's multi-level governance structure under the new Village Law in Indonesia. The analysis identifies the processes of women's empowerment, their involvement in grassroots women's collective action, engagement with civil society organisations, and how women influence village institutions, policies, development spending and priorities, and new projects as well as social norms in communities.
Sulis lives in Tanggamus, Lampung. Through her organisation of youth music groups, she was selected as Head of the Community Welfare Section, a position she has held for thirteen years. Her concern for her community led to the Village Head selecting her to take part in DAMAR's gender awareness training program and, over time, Sulis has become one of its leaders. Sulis is also a key contact point to explain government health insurance policy to her community. Sulis has applied what she learnt in FAKTA-DAMAR classes and felt able to talk to her husband about how to understand gender equality and has developed her leadership and organisational skills. For Sulis, DAMAR's training has enhanced her leadership capabilities. It was the catalyst for her nomination for the 2020 Village Head election
Morphological response of a sandy shoreline to a natural obstacle at sa mesa longa beach, italy
A case study is presented of a comprehensive analysis of the shoreline stability of a salient (primary response) in the lee of an emergent natural reef at Sa Mesa Longa Beach, Sardinia, Italy. The analysis combines sources of information at different levels of detail and accuracy: field surveys conducted with a GPS unit, remotely sensed imagery, geometrical and shape predictive formulas, and simulations with a 2D wave/current/sediment transport numerical model. The morphological simulation results for the primary response agree qualitatively with field observations and predictions from empirical formulas. The accuracy of a simplified wave energy model in defining the littoral sediment cell compared to the more detailed results of the morphological model is also investigated. Although the analysis has some limitations, as highlighted in the paper, the results appear to be promising in terms of applying the analysis to fragile morphologies in the lee of natural reefs in the Mediterranean Sea. © 2013 Elsevier B.V
Wage Dispersion and Equilibrium Search Models: Some Evidence from Italy
This paper provides a structural estimation of an equilibrium search model with on-the-job search and heterogeneity in firms' productivities using a sample of Italian male workers. Results indicate that arrival rates of offers for workers are higher when unemployed than when employed and firms exploit their monopsony power when setting wages. As a result, workers earn far less than their marginal product. The model is then used to study regional labour market differentials in Italy. Wide variation in frictional transition parameters across areas helps to explain persistent unemployment and wage differentials. Copyright 2008 The Author. Field measurements of tug waves in the Cagliari Harbor, Italy
Field measurements of ship-generated waves were performed in the Cagliari Harbor where tugboats are significant wave generators that can adversely affect small-sized moored vessels. A method is proposed in which the major characteristics of the ship-generated waves in areas where wind waves and swell occur can be assessed and presented. The requirements and limitations of the method are also discussed. The results of the method application to field data were compared to an extensively used empirical equation from the literature for the prediction of the maximum wave height generated by tug passages. Although this comparison was affected by the uncertainties in the formation and propagation of ship-generated waves, it confirmed the practical validity of the proposed method
