Influence of chirped pump shape on the two-pump fiber optical parametric amplification
The gain performance of two-pump fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) pumped by different kinds of chirped pump pulses is investigated numerically. It shows that the gain performances of FOPA are evidently influenced by the shapes of chirped pump pulses. The highest and broadest gain spectrum is obtained with the 10th-order super-Gaussian pulse in case of identical energy and full width at half-maximum of the pump pulses. Finally, the signal gain is also affected by the poor symmetry of pump pulse, which leads to a low gain performance
Strengthening oxygen reduction activity and stability of carbon-supported platinum nanoparticles by fluorination
By combining experimental and theoretical aspects, this study focuses on exploring and enhancing the activity and stability towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of fluorinated carbon supported platinum nanoparticles in the acidic electrolyte. Physical characterization results revealed that fluorinated carbon support generates a C-F bonding. The interaction between Pt and fluorinated-carbon allows for a strong charge transfer from Pt to the support. This phenomenon is consistent with the density functional theory (DFT) analysis. Because of the fluorination, the electronic structure of Pt is changed, which is an advantage for improving the catalytic activity and stability of the catalyst towards ORR
Exploiting collaborative filtering techniques for automatic assessment of student free-text responses
The automatic assessment of free-text responses of students is a relatively newer task in both computational linguistics and educational technology. The goal of the task is to produce an assessment of student answers to explanation and definition questions typically asked in problems seen in practice exercises or tests. Unlike some conventional methods which assess the student responses based on only information about their corresponding questions, this paper exploits idea of collaborative filtering to analyze student responses and used an effective collaborative filtering model - feature-based matrix factorization model to deal with this challenge. The experimental results show that our feature-based matrix factorization model outperforms the baseline models and the model with a re-ranking phase can achieve a better and competitive performance - 63.6% overall accuracy on the Beetle dataset. One-Pump Phase Sensitive Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifier with Dual-Core Fiber
The gain performance of one pump phase sensitive fiber optical parametric amplifier (PS-FOPA) in the dual-core fiber is numerically investigated without pump depleting. The effects of the core coupling coefficient(C), the pump wavelength and the initial signal phase on the gain of PS-FOPA are analyzed in detail. It shows that, the signal gain is greatly affected by different core coupling coefficients, and a flatter gain is achieved with suitable C value. Also, when the pump wavelength is greater than the zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW), both the peak gain and gain bandwidth decrease with the increase of C, but the trend is opposite in case of the pump wavelength less than the ZDW. Additionally, the flatter and broader gain spectra are obtained by adjusting the initial signal phase in core 2. This simulation provides a detail analysis for the dual-core PS-FOPA, which is significant for the all optical fiber amplifier systems
An improved algorithm for computing viewshed based on reference planes
Although the algorithm for computing viewshed based on reference planes (the RP viewshed algorithm) doesn't need to use DEM interpolation method and is more efficient than the R3 algorithm. However, its result in the terrain of the 'peaks and valleys' still has a big difference with the result of the R3 algorithm. For one thing, this paper deeply analyzes the defects of the RP compared with the R3 viewshed algorithm in the terrain of the peaks and valleys. For another, this paper proposes an improved algorithm for the RP viewshed algorithm. This improved algorithm not only has the nearly same efficiency with the RP algorithm, but also has small difference with R3 in the terrain of the 'peaks and valleys'. ? 2011 IEEE.EI
Logarithmic variance profiles and the corresponding f-1 spectra of temperature fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
We report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either
