The bath apartments of François I at Fontainebleau.
The present article is a new analysis of the bath apartments of François I at Fontainebleau, created around 1543 and destroyed in 1697. If the sources speak of six rooms, described form the East, the present restitution shows in fact that there was a sequence of seven rooms, from a forgotten vestibule at the East to the stove at the West. The author underlines the remarkable nature of these baths, as different from little Italian stufe as they are from nordic baths. Displaying here his most exceptional paintings and mythological mural decorations, François I wanted to renew the Roman thermes, and to emulate Charles V’s mauresque baths in the Granada Alhambra, the only European bath apartments of a comparable scale.Eschenfelder Chantal. Un aspect du paysage napolitain au Moyen Âge : les bains dans la ville du Xe au XIIIe siècle
An Aspect of Neapolitan City Life in the Middle Ages : the Baths from the 10th to the 13th Century - Based on a number of specific sources, in particular the archives of the Monasteri Soppressi and the totality of the cartularies compiled by contemporary experts, the author sets out to cast light on certain aspects of the physiognomy of the city baths and their integration in the landscape of Neapolitan life.
Abstract. — Taking lake Annecy as an example, the author examines the growth of bathing in the lake and the progressive creation of a differentiated social space; the consequences of this on the development of leisure activities in this area are considered. Links are shown between the major evolutionary stages and modifications to the general and local socio-cultural environment, as with the diffusion of new mental images of the area and new behaviour patterns resulting from tourist development.Résumé. Vernex Jean-Claude. A BIOMASS-BASED MODEL TO ESTIMATE THE PLAUSIBILITY OF EXOPLANET BIOSIGNATURE GASES
Author Manuscript September 24, 2013Biosignature gas detection is one of the ultimate future goals for exoplanet atmosphere studies. We have created a framework for linking biosignature gas detectability to biomass estimates, including atmospheric photochemistry and biological thermodynamics. The new framework is intended to liberate predictive atmosphere models from requiring fixed, Earth-like biosignature gas source fluxes. New biosignature gases can be considered with a check that the biomass estimate is physically plausible. We have validated the models on terrestrial production of NO, H[subscript 2]S, CH[subscript 4], CH[subscript 3]Cl, and DMS. We have applied the models to propose NH[subscript 3] as a biosignature gas on a "cold Haber World," a planet with a N[subscript 2]-H[subscript 2] atmosphere, and to demonstrate why gases such as CH[subscript 3]Cl must have too large of a biomass to be a plausible biosignature gas on planets with Earth or early-Earth-like atmospheres orbiting a Sun-like star. To construct the biomass models, we developed a functional classification of biosignature gases, and found that gases (such as CH[subscript 4], H[subscript 2]S, and N[subscript 2]O) produced from life that extracts energy from chemical potential energy gradients will always have false positives because geochemistry has the same gases to work with as life does, and gases (such as DMS and CH[subscript 3]Cl) produced for secondary metabolic reasons are far less likely to have false positives but because of their highly specialized origin are more likely to be produced in small quantities. The biomass model estimates are valid to one or two orders of magnitude; the goal is an independent approach to testing whether a biosignature gas is plausible rather than a precise quantification of atmospheric biosignature gases and their corresponding biomasses.Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi
System Identification of the Delfly Nimble: Modeling of the Lateral Body Dynamics
Flapping wing micro air vehicles (FWMAV's) are a subcategory of unmanned aerial vehicle which use flapping wings for thrust generation. The high agility and maneuverability of FWMAV's are very favorable attributes, making them more applicable in cluttered spaces. A tailless FWMAV called the Delfly Nimble has been developed at the Delft University of Technology. Due to the inherent instability of the tailless design an active controller is required to ensure safe and stable flight of the drone. In previous research, models have been developed for the longitudinal dynamics of the Delfly Nimble. In this paper, a grey-box state-space model of the lateral body dynamics in hover conditions is identified using system identification techniques. The parameters which needed to be estimated were stability and control derivatives, and they were obtained with a least-squares approach. Free-flight experiments were performed to generate the identification and validation data. A doublet train was used in the identification experiments, with the gains of the controller adjusted in such a way that maximum excitation was acquired. The identified model has been validated with various maneuvers. These included doublets, 112-maneuvers, maneuvers using coupled inputs, and maneuvers with sideways flight. The resulting model is able to predict the state derivatives of most maneuver accurately, reaching accuracies of over 90% for maneuvers close to hover. Moreover, in closed-loop configuration it is able to simulate the state response accurately, with accuracies of over 85% for maneuvers close to hover, and remains stable, making it applicable for controller design and stability analysis. Finally, based on the model the inherent instability of the lateral body dynamics was also confirmed, for there are eigenvalues with positive real parts.Aerospace Engineerin
