Volunteerism: expanding the frontiers of youth development

    No full text
The role of young volunteers in improving the quality of life of individuals and of the community is well recognized in Malaysia and other parts of the world. They are active participants in various non-governmental organizations, youth organizations, schools, colleges, universities and even homes for the elderly and orphans, as well as other social welfare centers. Volunteers act as a resource of help and support for individuals, families, services, and institutions. Through volunteering, these young people enter into various social environments and encounter people living in different social circumstances.Through addressing the needs of communities, groups and individuals, volunteering prepares youth towards developing pro-social behaviors in their journey towards adulthood. Through encountering diverse situations involving families, individuals develop tolerance and respect for differences. Thus, youth volunteering is one of the means to nurture the spirit of responsible citizenship. Volunteering motivates young people to continue to get involved in community-oriented volunteer activities even when they become adults. The combination of action and reflection in youth volunteer programs increases the socializing impact of voluntary work. Interestingly, the concepts and practices of youth volunteerism are highly relevant for national stability and community betterment in Malaysia. Stability in Malaysia depends mainly on the attitudes and behavior of its people. Mutual tolerance based on ethnicity, culture and religion and respect for human rights, coexistence, and solidarity are values and behavior patterns that could be enhanced through educating the young people on volunteerism. Thus, developing the spirit of volunteerism is a powerful means to expand the frontiers of youth development. Volunteerism has been and will always be one of the pillars for positive youth development in Malaysia and ultimately, the prosperity of our beloved country. This inaugural paper aims to further redefine the roles of volunteerism as one of the instruments supporting positive youth development

PCF2 // About three decades ago, distance education, when it first started in Malaysia, was seen as misplaced and frowned upon by many educationists, parents, learners and the general public. It was first formally implemented by Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1971. However, it was only in the mid-1990’s that some form general acceptance was seen and injected into the mainstream education. There was a general agreement that distance learning will enable larger audience to take advantage of the government’s effort to democratize and liberalize education by bringing education to the doorsteps of the learners. There are different approaches taken by different institutions with regard to distance education and learning. Universiti Putra Malaysia, through the experience of handling the Diploma in Youth in Development Work, came up with several alternatives to produce excellent distant learners. This paper is aimed at revealing some of the major issues and challenges faced by learners and distance education providers. These includes the issue of motivating and sustaining self-directed learners; learning by doing and independent learners. The issue of quality assurance will also be discussed. The paper will also discuss the steps taken to come up with the contingency model of institutionalizing support distance learning at UPM. Recommendations for different approach for different learners are put forward including those who are working on shift basis, normal hours or freelance. /

    No full text
Purpose - The study explored how individual adaptability factors impact philanthropic behavior among community health workers (CHWs), with social network as the mediator. Design/methodology/approach – this study used a correlational research design involving 230 CHWs under MERCY Malaysia, a non-government organization (NGO) in the health sector. The data were analyzed using a two-step approach in structural equation modeling (SEM), combining a measurement model and a structural model. Findings – Results showed that (1) social network fully mediated the relationship between task-oriented coping and philanthropic behavior and (2) social network partially mediated the relationship between social trust and philanthropic behavior. Research limitations/implications – The data of the study were generated from a single NGO (MERCY Malaysia) and considered only social adaptability as the antecedent. Originality/ value – The study is the first of its kind conducted in Malaysia. The finding that social network played a significant role as mediator in philanthropic behavior should be capitalized on by HRD practitioners to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the philanthropic work of CHWs

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of job satisfaction among security guards of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia and to determine predictors of job satisfaction among them. A questionnaire was used to measure the job aspects and job satisfaction level of 96 randomly selected UPM security guards. The data were processed using SPSS PC+. The independent variables included demographic characteristics, organizational factors and job dimension factors. The study showed that the majority of UPM security guards were moderately or highly satisfied with their job. The study also showed that factors such as organizational policies, opportunities for self-development, facilities at the work place, academic qualifications and job load were significantly related to job satisfaction level among the security guards. Organizational policy was the most important predictor of job satisfaction (R" = 0.50, P < 0.05), followed by opportunities to develop, facilities at the work place, academic qualifications and job load. The study also found that age, position, wages, tenure, job itself, promotion opportunities, supervision and peers are not predictors of job satisfaction level

Profiling youth participation in volunteer activities in Malaysia: understanding the motivational factors influencing participation in volunteer work among Malaysian youth

    No full text
The involvement of youth in volunteer work is essential as it enables them to contribute to society (Checkoway, 2011). However, profile studies on Malaysian youth participation in volunteer activities are scarce and the subject warrants further research (Siti Raba'ah et al., 2011; Turiman et al., 2009). What is the level of participation of youth in volunteer activities? What hinders or motivates them to participate in volunteering work? This research profiles youth participation in volunteer activities in Malaysia. Specifically, it is aimed at profiling: 1) factors that motivate youth to participate in volunteer work; 2) the level of motivation towards participation in volunteer work among Malaysian youth; and 3) the most dominant motivation factor of youth participation in volunteer work. A total of 342 Malaysian youths participated in this nationwide study. A Youth Motivation on Participation in Volunteering Questionnaire was administered to Malaysian youth. Data were analysed and interpreted to provide the key findings on Malaysian youth engagement and participation in volunteer work. This study shows that the relationship between motivation and participation in volunteer work is positively significant. It shows that almost all the respondents in this study participating in voluntary activities were influenced by a number of motivating factors. The study ends with recommendations for policy makers and practitioners on how to attract youth to participate and to engage more effectively in volunteer work

The potential of youth workers as facilitators of values formation and development.

Youth workers everywhere are engaged in a daily revolution to facilitate change within young people, often with limited resources, support and infrastructure. They do this work through the developmental relationships that they form with their young clients. However, to achieve their goals and reap the rewards of their efforts, youth workers must be effective agents of change. The focus of this article is to further understand the notion of youth workers as change agents, in the context of developing values among the young people with whom they work. The role of values in youth work, the formation and development of values in youth, transformative learning approaches, the steps in experiential learning and youth-work pedagogies that use models of how youth learn are also discussed. With the increasing demands on youth workers to facilitate change in the lives of their young clients, these groups need professional training and education to prepare them to do the critical work of youth development

This paper discusses the profiling of young Malaysian volunteers who were members of professional volunteer organizations. The subjects in the study were volunteers from 26 different volunteer organizations serving the community at local and international levels. Data for the study were collected via a questionnaire survey. There were 337 respondents, 225 of whom worked for local volunteer organizations while 112 were volunteers for international organizations. They were between the ages of 15 and 30 (M age = 22.8, SD = 5.65). Using the Volunteer Function Inventory (VFI) by the Fetzer Institute, six dimensions were extracted from the data following a factor analysis. These dimensions were then incorporated into a model of philanthropy and volunteerism based on the Social Capital theory. The estimates confirmed important reasons for volunteering, viz. intention to help others, charitable giving, activism, helping power motivation, and charity values. A factorial multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed that the mean VFI factor scores were significantly different between volunteers for local and for international organizations. Follow-up analyses revealed that the volunteers working for international volunteer organizations displayed slightly higher scores in intention, activism, and helping power motivation in all six areas compared to those working with local community organizations. Implications from the findings are also discussed
