The expressions of epistemic modality can indicate the attitude of the speaker about the truth of the statement. In addition, they are effective strategic resources that the speaker uses to achieve their communicative purpose in certain contexts. Improper use or lack of use can lead to impolite effects. In the present article, we follow Arndt’s model (1987) which raises two basic meanings of (yo) creo (que): belief / insufficient evidence and attitude / personal opinion. For the analysis of the two interpretations of the construction, we use the Corpus of Spanish to extract the textual examples of this work in order to obtain the statistical calculations with which we discover the use tendency. In addition to the quantitative analysis, we resort to the qualitative study to analyse (yo) creo (que) in concrete communicative contexts and discuss their pragmatic values, in particular, their contribution to the courtesy and the social image of the interlocutors. The results of the analysis allow us to affirm (yo) creo (que) can produce epistemic effects in many contexts while experiencing a total loss of epistemic value and becoming a polite resourse in other cases. In addition, there are cases in which the two interpretations can be perceived in the same context. On the other hand, we managed to draw the conclusion that contextually (yo) creo (que) can indicate mitigation and intensification. It is used mainly for the mitigation both in its function of “epistemic modal” —which represents a low degree of certainty— and in the function of “modalizer of opinion” —which works as a resource capable of attending to the needs of politeness—. Furthermore, this marker can acquire the quality of intensification when it expresses opinions that benefit the social image of the interlocutor.
Yo, me, mí, contigo
[EN] The exhibition Yo, me, mí, mí, contigo, curated by Pedro Vicente, presents different works that focus on autobiographical practices and in which the artists make their own creation from and with themselves, approaching the contemporary concept of the self from different fields and with different approaches. These artists (look) at themselves through questions of gender, race, body, identity, memory, family, loss, oblivion, illness or the passing of time in a never-ending search for their own identity, making the spectator a participant in this process, which is always under construction. In addition to the text by Pedro Vicente, which contextualises and introduces the artists participating in the exhibition, this catalogue includes texts by Nerea Ubieto, Gemma San Cornelio and Elena Zapata that explore some autobiographical practices of emerging artists, analyses the phenomenon of the selfie and its social consequences, and carries out a contextualised study of the audiovisual programme of the last four editions of VISIONA.Vicente-Mullor, P. Author Identification from Song Lyrics
Machine Learning (ML) tools have been used extensively in a wide variety of domains
recently. Due the enormous amount of data being produced, machine learning techniques
are being heavily used to make sense of data & derive meaningful results. Using machine
learning tools, we can turn the data into knowledge.
Music is one of the truest forms of art. Bangladesh has a great history of music with a
great tradition of song writing over centuries. Authorship attribution is the way of
identifying the author from a linguistic corpus.
This paper demonstrates a guideline to identify the author of a Bengali song from the
lyrics of that song using machine learning. This research work presents the first work on
machine learning approach for author attribution from the lyrics of a song. Here six
methods of machine learning are used for the author identification and high accuracies
have been achieved from these methods. It is observed that Naïve Bayes method provides
higher accuracy in comparison with the other methods
At war with their bodies or at war with their minds? A glimpse into the lives and minds of female yo-yo dieters - the curtain has lifted in the UK
Yo-yo dieting is a common phenomenon yet little interdisciplinary research has been carried out on dieting, food and nutrition in the social context. This study investigated the effects of yo-yo dieting on social and psychological well-being using qualitative methods. Data were collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with women who yo-yo diet. A total of 9 participants, 20-51 years old, were recruited by purposive and snowball sampling techniques from the University of Roehampton, London, U.K., where the first author was a student at the time of the study. Thematic analysis derived four major themes: the physical and/or mental impact of yo-yo dieting, the similarity of reported symptoms with those associated with eating disorders, familial and sociocultural pressure for initiating diets and the struggle for control and/or identity. Furthermore, there appears to be a link between yo-yo dieting and interviewees’ references to depressive mood episodes. The implications of these findings for the risks of developing eating disorders are discussed
Spectral and redox properties of zinc porphyrin core dendrimers with triarylamines as dendron
[[abstract]]The first and second generation of zinc porphyrin core dendrimers (3 and 4) with triarylamine as dendron have been synthesized via Ullmann coupling reaction. Their absorption and emission spectra indicate that there are strong interactions between zinc porphyrin core and triarylamine dendrons. Zinc porphyrin links with triarylamine causes Soret band broadening and Q band shift as compared with ZnTPP. Because of the antenna effect on these dendrimers, the fluorescence quantum yields were strongly enhanced when more triarylamine moieties were linked. Cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemical methods were used to investigate the redox properties of dendrimers. Axial ligation of zinc porphyrin with N-methylimidazole is useful in differentiating the oxidation site of dendrimers. For the first generation dendrimer (3), porphyrin ring oxidation potential shifts cathodically because the periphery dendrons are strong electron-donating groups. On the other hand, the dendrons of the second generation (4) are oxidized first and generate an atmosphere of eight positive charges. The porphyrin ring core is then oxidized with an anodic shift in potential due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the oxidized substituents.[[note]]SC
Hydrogen gas-rechargeable metal hydride electrode for Ni-MH battery
[[abstract]]Some nonbreakable pellets made of an AB(5) alloy and metallic powder Ag or Ni were used as the anode in a Ni-MH battery such that the anode could be charged in hydrogen gas and discharged in electrolyte. The performance is influenced by the alloy properties, electrode porosity, hydrogen pressure, discharge current, electrolyte polarization, and contamination in the system. For the pellet Ag/AB(5) = 10, continuous discharge can proceed but only for a limited time. The lower porosity of the pellet may be the main problem. For the pellet Ni/AB(5) = 25, it can be discharged unlimitedly at a constant hydrogen pressure of 20 atm. When discharged with a fixed amount of hydrogen gas, the adsorbed hydrogen is immediately discharged on the surface rather than being absorbed into the bulk, and the discharge capacity comes mostly from the gaseous hydrogen rather than from the hydrogen already dissolved in the bulk of alloy. Therefore, the pellet acts more like a catalyst for hydrogen dissociation than as an absorbent. Furthermore, a minimum of similar to 7 atm of hydrogen pressure is required for the system to operate properly. It is suggested that, in order for such a system to operate better under the wet condition, a higher hydrogen gas pressure be maintained to accelerate the hydrogenation rate and more porous pellets be used for faster reaction kinetics.
