Helena Grabschrift-Taffet, krakowska artystka urodzona w Tuchowie
Helena Grabschrift was born on 18 April 1909 in Tuchów. Starting 1929, she studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, taught by such artists as Władysław Jarocki, Wojciech Weiss and Stanisław Kamocki. In late 1930s she became involved with the Krakow Association of Jewish Painters and Sculptors. She was one of the most active members of the organisation, and made arrangements for the last Krakow exhibitions of the works of Jewish painters before the war. For a long time, nothing was known of her life after the end of the Second World War; she was considered either dead or missing. The author of the present article managed to find sources confirming that the artist had survived the war, and to contact her family in Israel. Consequently, it was possible to add to the artist’s biography many new details from pre-war years, the period of Nazi occupation, as well as her later life in Israel, where she moved with her husband Henryk Taffet. Unfortunately, not much has survived from the artist's pre-war output, therefore the inter-war press remains the most important source of information about her work.
Another Way. Representations of History in the Films of Wojciech Jerzy Has, Jan Jakub Kolski, Filip Bajon and Anna Jadowska – a Case Study
(…) Autorka zdywersyfikuje owo „inne spojrzenie”, wyróżniając: spojrzenie Gombrowiczowskie (Szyfry i Pornografia), spojrzenie dziecka (Poznań 56), spojrzenie (post)historyka (Generał. Zamach na Gibraltarze) (…). Każdy wątek zostaje udokumentowany i poświadczony szczegółowymi analizami wybranych scen (…).
Na podstawie czterech wybranych do analizy filmów autorka zbudowała dyskurs wielostronny, bogaty, złożony, uderzający zarówno erudycją, jak i oryginalnością. Tekst jest znakomicie napisany, żywo i zajmująco, a tok wywodu przykuwa uwagę czytelnikaAnother Way considers the way in which four film directors present unique vision of the Polish national history (World War II, Poznań June ’56) and challenge established ideas about “historical film” perceived as a “window onto the past”. According to the author, films selected for the purpose of the book do not try to tell its viewers “what really happened” or to revise the history itself (impossible task) but discuss with the tradition of historical representation (by multiplying narrative perspective, mixing genres and blurring the distinction between documentary and fiction). The aim of this book is to explore the strategies by which filmmakers undertook three basic tasks: contesting, visioning and revisioning history. The films are analyzed in the paradigm of cultural turns: interpretative turn (Szyfry), postcolonial turn (Pornografia), performative turn (Poznań 56) and narrative turn (Generał. Zamach na Gibraltarze) and in the context of historiophoty defined by Hayden White as “the representation of history and our thought about it in visual images and filmic discourse”. The fundamental argument is that nowadays films are the most influential and powerful way of visioning history (prosthetic culture) but – as historian Robert Rosenstone points out – must be seen not in terms of how they compare to the written history but as a way of recounting the past with its own rules of representation.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. The “Significant Shot” and Its Functions in the Popular Variant of Puzzle Films
Wybrane filmy zostały umieszczone w kontekście kognitywizmu (Bordwell, Thompson) i narratologii (McHale). The article focuses on the “significant shot” in the popular (as opposed to heavy weight) variant of puzzle films. The shot is identified as significant if it performs a prominent role in the structure of a film text. To capture its significance (in the aspect of meaning-making), the author focuses on its two fundamental functions: recognition (leading to “re-telling” and re-contextualisation of the story) and suspension (opening the text to ambivalent and contradicting interpretations). The text has been inspired by Kristin Thompson’s writings on the dominant defined as an element that unifies all aspects of a work. According to Thompson, surprise governs form – from the overall shape of the plot to the level of the individual sentence. The article argues that “surprise” is the dominant in puzzle films and “the individual sentence” – on the metaphorical level – may be perceived as the equivalent of the film shot. Selected films are positioned in the theoretical frameworks of cognitivism (Thompson, Bordwell) and narratology (McHale)
Recenzja: Trzy spojrzenia. O książce Nataszy Korczarowskiej-Różyckiej Inne spojrzenie...Wyobrażenia historii w filmach Wojciecha Jerzego Hasa, Jana Jakuba Kolskiego, Filipa Bajona i Anny Jadowskiej
THREE LOOKS. ON NATASZA KORCZAROWSKA-RÓŻYCKA’S BOOK INNE SPOJRZENIE... WYOBRAŻENIA HISTORII W FILMACH WOJCIECHA JERZEGO HASA, JANA JAKUBA KOLSKIEGO, FILIPA BAJONA I ANNY JADOWSKIEJThe article is a review of Natasza Korczarowska-Różycka’s last book Inne spojrzenie... Wyobrażenia historii w fi lmach Wojciecha Jerzego Hasa, Jana Jakuba Kolskiego, Filipa Bajona i Anny Jadowskiej Łódź 2013. According to the reviewer, the book is a bold attempt to combine film analysis with social issues. Korczarowska-Różycka proposed her own perspective of film reading on the intersection of close film analysis, sociological attitude and historical reflections about collective memory. She sees movie as a document of some socially established historical points of view or images, but also as a dynamic force, that is transforming and recreating these images. Her selection of directors and applied methodological basis allow her to avoid clichéd reflections on genre of historical cinema, but also lay her work open to the charge of certain arbitrariness. The author tries to not only present Korczarowska-Różycka’s book, but also bring out its theoretical background and place it in the broader context of memory studies.Translated by Aleksandra IdczakTHREE LOOKS.
The picture of Spain in the 19th century on the basis of Stanisław Stroynowski’s compendium Podróż po Europie w Obrazach The pictures from a journey around EuropeThe author, analyzing the synopsis by Stanisław Stroynowski, revises the opinions about Spain expressed in the 19th century Poland. The article mentions the foreign travellers who crossed the peninsula in the 19th century, the literary results of that presence, the clichés and the projection of the foreign and Polish historiography about Spain. The article comments on the Polish presence in Spain, every time more habitual, and the reborn popularity of this country in different groups of the Polish society, the literary testimony of that fascination expressed in books, articles and correspondence, which constitute a very expressive source of information about Spain. On Melancholy of a Celebration
W swych rozważaniach nad melancholijnym wymiarem świętowania autorka poddaje analizie cztery filmy: Godziny (2002) Stephena Daldry’ego, Margot jedzie na ślub (2007) Noaha Baumbacha, Rachel wychodzi za mąż (2008) Jonathana Demme’a i Melancholię (2011) Larsa von Triera. W każdej z tych produkcji Korczarowska tropi ewidentnie melancholijne nacechowanie fabuły i rysów głównych bohaterów. In her reflections on the melancholy dimension of celebration, the author analyses four films: The Hours (2002) by Stephen Daldry, Margot at the Wedding (2007) by Noah Baumbach, Rachel Getting Married (2008) by Jonathan Demme and Melancholia (2011) by Lars von Trier. In each of these productions, Korczarowska clearly identifies the melancholy character of the plot and features of the main characters. The analytical parts of the text, also referring to the iconographic layer of these films, allow the author to conclude that, although celebration needs a happy mood, and in essence it has to unite the community, and let individuals and groups - using rituals - “pass” safely from the ordinary duration of time to sacred time, it is during the celebration that melancholy manifests itself with a destructive force. This is probably because, during a birthday party, wedding fete or a solemn family dinner, we unexpectedly realize that something has passed away from us once and for all
Krajobraz miasta w narracji filmów dokumentalnych o Lublinie
The article is an attempt at a critical original analysis of documentary films in relation to the documentary and narrative function of the landscape. The author treats the film space as a ‘world picture’ as understood by Martin Heidegger, and in this context, she presents her own model of seeing and understanding the world present in her own documentary work. The landscape here is saturated with meanings, especially emptiness, lack and post-memory, which speaks the most in a metaphorical way about the non-existent world. The author also refers to Walter Benjamin’s concept of the city as a book, and reads the history of multicultural Lublin, a kind of ghost town, form this perspective. The article is therefore an original attempt to discover the mental layer of the film, which is usually beyond the reach of its recipient. The article is an attempt at a critical original analysis of documentary films in relation to the documentary and narrative function of the landscape.
