Early childhood studies in a polarised dystopia: Pedagogy as ethical leadership in education
Young children today face intergenerational inequality as a consequence of ecological, economic and humanitarian crises. ‘The future’ is characterised by unpredictability and insecurity. So how might early childhood education and care adapt to this dystopian global picture? This chapter explores the use of Levitas’s (2013) Utopia as Method in an Early Childhood Studies (ECS) undergraduate module that explicitly aims to engage students with future-oriented practice. This method sees students articulate characteristics of ‘the good life’ as seen by a variety of perspectives, including their own personal viewpoint and from the point of view of national policy, and synthesising these perspectives into a vision of childhood utopia. Students propose practicable and critical action to improve children’s experiences of childhood.
Predictably, students’ visions of childhood utopia frequently share common characteristics: a child-centred focus, active engagement with key people, community spaces and meaningful relationships. Predictably, too, students’ visions of the good life differ. This chapter analyses the various ways ‘ethics’ are brought into focus through the module. It addresses the compatibility and incompatibility of students’ respective constructions of the good life and how these might be resolved when we find ourselves to be poles apart in what constitutes our respective utopia. It also analysis the way in which students’ and tutors’ explorations of utopia suggest directions for the leadership of ECS in dystopian times

Improving productivity with dairy farm performance
How productive can a dairy farm be? What options are available to dairy farmers to increase their productivity and profitability? How can you reduce milk production costs effectively? These are the kinds of questions that dairy farmers are, or should be, asking leading up to and immediately after deregulation. These questions, and many more, can be answered by participating in Agriculture Western Australia\u27s (AGWEST) Dairy Farm Performance (DFP) Program. David Windsor, Ken Crawford, Stuart Gallagher and Vicki Staines report on DFP and the benefits being generated for dairy farmers in Western Australia

Incommensurability in Aristotle's Theory of Reciprocal Justice
In just proportional exchange, under Aristotle's theory of reciprocal justice, superior sharers in a community materially assist the weaker, and receive honour as a reward. Aristotle's economic thought is represented with a system of 18 formulae. Explained are: (1) What Aristotle means when he says that it is impossible for two sharers or their erga to be commensurable; (2) The extent to which the variables in Aristotle's proportions can be quantified. (3) What diagonal pairing (κατ διμτρoν σζυξις) is; (4) How need makes sharers and their erga sufficiently' commensurable; and (5) Aristotle's theory of what is just in exchange. © 2012 BSHP.Barnes J., 1984, COMPLETE WORKS ARIST; Barnes J., 1977, ARTICLES ARISTOTLE, V2, P140; Burnet J., 1900, ETHICS ARISTOTLE; CORDNER C, 1994, PHILOSOPHY, V69, P291; Courant R., 1937, DIFFERENTIAL INTEGRA, V1; Danzig G, 2000, CLASSICAL PHILOL, V95, P399, DOI 10.1086-449509; d'Aquino Thomas, 1964, COMMENTARY ARISTOTLE, V1; Gallagher RL, 2011, BRIT J HIST PHILOS, V19, P363, DOI 10.1080-09608788.2011.563517; Gauthier R.
