The Extended Atkinson Family and Changes in the Expenditure Distribution: Spain 1973/74-2003
This paper emphasizes the properties of a family of inequality measures which extends the Atkinson indices and is axiomatically characterized by a multiplicative decomposition property where the withingroup component is a generalized weighted mean with weights summing exactly to 1. This family contains canonical forms of all aggregative inequality measures, each bounded above by 1, has a useful and intuitive geometric interpretation and provides an alternative dominance criterion for ordering distributions in terms of inequality. Taking the Spanish Household Budget Surveys (HBS) for 1973/74, 1980/81, and 1990/91 and the more recent Continuous HBS for 2003, we show the advantages and possibilities of this extended family in regard to completing and detailing information in studies of inequality focussing on the tails of the distribution and on the changes in the distribution when the population is partitioned into population subgroups.inequality measurement, Atkinson indices
Letter from Harry G. Atkinson, Chief, Intelligence Branch, Security and Intelligence Division, to George Hideo Nakamura, October 16, 1945
Correspondence from Harry Atkinson to George Hideo Nakamura regarding withdrawal of limitations imposed by Nakamura's removal. The Japanese American Archival Collection documents the people, places, and daily life of Japanese Americans, primarily those who lived in the once thriving community of pre-war Florin in the Sacramento region, as well as the conditions in American incarceration camps during World War II. The approximately 7,000 original items include personal and official letters, photographs, diaries, arts and crafts, newsletters, textiles, camps artifacts, yearbooks and other publications

Military Life at Fort Atkinson 1819-1827
This thesis uses an in depth examination of documents and other archeological finds in order to give an accurate description of military life at Fort Atkinson from 1819-1827.During the summer of 1956, the Nebraska State Historical Society Field Party, conducted by Marvin F. Kivett, Director of the Museum, excavated a portion of the site of the fort, near Fort Calhoun, Nebraska. The author was granted access to the material recovered by this archeological field party for the writing of this thesis.
The author first gives an examination of the background behind For Atkinson, including a description of the Yellowstone Expedition and the expedition for Council Bluffs. The author then goes on to discuss the construction of the fort, the general routines of those who lived at Fort Atkinson, the quartermaster and their duties, the medical department and even details of the musicians and band that worked at the fort. The author also wrote of the relations Fort Atkinson had with neighboring Indian tribes and finally discusses the reasons behind the decision to abandon Fort Atkinson and the overall significance of Fort Atkinson.

Nancy Atkinson
An Author Event presented by The Friends of the University of Adelaide Library, 16 August 2018, Ira Raymond Exhibition Room, Barr Smith Library.Emma will speak about Nancy Atkinson who was a pioneer bacteriologist in antibiotics and salmonellas from 1939 at the University of Adelaide and the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science. Interestingly, Emma’s grandmother, Jessica McEwin (nee Mawson), was working at the University of Adelaide as a bacteriologist at the same time as Nancy Atkinson. Writing about Nancy continues Emma’s theme of promoting lives which might otherwise go unrecognised. Situating Nancy Atkinson in the context of women scientists of the 20th Century and more particularly in the context of South Australian women scientists will help to highlight the significance of her achievements and contributions to scientific research. Emma will be making use of Nancy’s papers that are held in Special Collections

Bounded Sequential Dominance Criteria
In the spirit of Fleurbaey et al. (2001), it is tempting to introduce more reasonable lower and upper bounds in Atkinson and Bourguigon’s (1987) sequential generalized Lorenz dominance procedure. Unfortunately, our proposal leads, at best, to an average household income criterion, which is unsuited to make heterogeneous welfare comparisons. We therefore restrict attention to imposing either lower or upper bounds, resulting in two new sequential dominance criteria.
Variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation at 26N
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and its variability has received considerable attention, motivated by its major role in the global climate system. Observations of AMOC strength at 26?N made by Rapid-WATCH (Rapid climate change - Will the Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation Halt) provide our best current estimate of the state of the AMOC. This study aims to improve understanding of ongoing measurements of AMOC variability made by Rapid-WATCH, and provide context for the 5-year timeseries presently available. The Rapid-WATCH system combines Gulf Stream transport, zonally integrated Ekman transport and mid-ocean transport observations at 26?N to assess AMOC strength. The Gulf Stream is found to possess a smooth annual cycle set by regional meridional wind stress, which is obscured on a year to year basis by internal ocean variability. Ekman transport possesses no dominant annual or semi-annual periodicity, and the seasonal cycle is obscured on a year to year basis by internal atmospheric variability largely related to fluctuations of the Azores high and the North Atlantic Oscillation. Sverdrup transport shows a dominant semi-annual periodicity which is strongly persistent from year to year but not seen in Rapid-WATCH measurements due to barotropic adjustment at these timescales. At interannual timescales, Sverdrup transport variability estimated from wind stress climatologies is found to exceed that of Gulf Stream variability, suggesting AMOC fluctuations of several Sverdrups have occurred over the past 30 years, partly related to the North Atlantic Oscillation. At decadal timescales, six hydrographic sections spread over half a century show that high latitude deep water mass changes have consistently spread to 24?N, with the DWBC their principal conduit into the 24?N section. Decadal changes in deep water transport of several Sverdrups are balanced by dynamic height changes close to the western boundary whilst water mass changes are largely density compensated
